right, I am still unsure about puppy and 1 yrs old. I am still reading about what kind of breed dogs are. border collie can hurt small animals, beagly does bark a lot, jack russel isn't good around with dogs. LAB and golden reliever are great. But i am not crazy about them. damn. We plan to go to SPCA and look around what they have.

English Setter is a great family dog. We had one growing up. Altho, English Setter loves to chase wild birds and small animals, they can't help it because it's their insticts.

Have you ever looked at petfinder.com? Wonderful, wonderful site. You can put in your zip code and then be as specific or general as you desire about what you're looking for. You will see all sorts of dogs listed from shelters and rescues within whatever driving distance of your zip code you say. That can save a lot of wear and tear and running around, because you can see what's available before you go.

At first we will try with spca if no luck then try with petfinder but i know myself that i will cry when i see tons of dogs who want a home. :tears: thats why i keep postponing until i am ready to face it and take an action by adopting a dog.

Not necessarily. Puppies can be very rambunctious and they have sharp teeth until their permanent teeth come in. An older, calmer dog that is already used to cats might be a better idea.

Also, look very carefully at breed. Don't get a sight-hound, for instance, that has been trained to go after small prey. Some breeds will naturally be better with cats than others.

cats can smack puppy. Puppy better learn the hard lesson like Bosco did. :giggle:

hmm - better take a visit to either shelter or pet store and touch various of dogs to see if you're still allergic or not.

Get licked too. some people have very specific dog allergy - saliva, fur, or feces (no don't touch it ew but you'll have to if you do a pottie run  ).

oh ppppfffttt - I don't believe in breed's stereotypical behavior. Based on my experience at animal shelter and raising dogs, all breeds are same thing to me. all breeds can hurt small animals/children, bark a lot or not, or are/aren't good with other dogs. it depends on how dogs were raised.

Hmmm.... a dog's behavior does depend a lot on how it was raised, of course, but it's not wise to ignore the breed's background. Terriers and dachshunds will generally want to dig, herding dogs will want to herd, hunting dogs will want to follow their noses and might be inclined to roam, so on and so forth.

Plus there are the variables of coat care and so on. If you want a pristine house, don't get a double-coated dog that will be shedding hair by the handfuls twice a year.

You want a toy breed dog or something like that? English Setter is a medium sized dog similar to Golden Retreiver or similar. I prefer medium sized dogs.

at any shelters - be sure to notify the owner that you have cats at home and they'll let you know the dog's dislike/tendencies.

and some shelters will do home check-up to see if your home meets dog's needs.

Just FYI - handful of dogs at petfinder are not even at the location as stated in ads. they're placed in fosters home and some are pretty far away (usually 1 hr away) so appointment is needed.

That would be a good idea. I am thinkin about it . one thing is that I hate that when i check dogs and dogs eyes looking at me " take me home!!" it will break my heart! that is what I hate is going in there but i have to.

see i am damn confused with what kind of dog and age and goes on. lol

1. age - you want a puppy.
2. size - how big?
3. drive - low energy? medium? high?
4. fur - you don't mind shedding?
5. activity - are you going to bring dog wherever you or your family go such as camping, park, etc. all the time?

For me - I will get a Sapsali later on when I have a house and family. I believe there is only 13 Sapsali in USA. I'll have to go to Korea to bring one here.

lol - what I hate is the smell.... :ugh:

Even though I volunteered at shelter for several months.... I still haven't gotten used to smell :ugh:

yeah i am aware about petfinder. I found the deaf cat through the petfinder and told friend about the deaf cat. The cat was from long island who lived with older lady who passed away. The deceaced lady's daughter told me that she begged her not to put down the deaf cat. She had no choice but kept him in the cage at the vet for two months!! No one wanted the deaf cat. I found him for my friend. The vet let the deaf cat there for free since the vet is a good friend with the daughter. The vet often visits syracuse so the vet was willing to bring the deaf cat all the way from long island to syracuse. My friend is very lucky for not driving down to LI. whew.

I feel the same thing about it. I am not looking forward to it but need a dog at home real soon and get over with it.

yes. biggest factor to dog's behavior is dependent on how it was raised and also its tendencies that it was born with.

as you said - a terrier will generally want to dig but a bitch (lol sorry - referring to pregnant dog) will give birth to usually 6+ puppies. After a few months - their personalities/tendencies will show so it's important to look for it and you can ask the owner about it. Some terriers don't care to dig and some terriers MUST dig.

that's how I found mine. my dog is mellow yet playful. My family and I (except my brother) are not very active people and we're laid-back so my dog was a perfect fit. My best friend wanted a dog and he's a very active person. I found a perfect fit for him too - mixed lab and pitbull.

1. age - you want a puppy. yes
2. size - how big? medium sized, maybe like a cat!
3. drive - low energy? medium? high? medium, not too high.
4. fur - you don't mind shedding? no shed but can live with shed.
5. activity - are you going to bring dog wherever you or your family go such as camping, park, etc. all the time? YESSSSS its a must! I hope i ll have dog as a hearing service if possible!!! lol

Sapsali looks adorable. thanks. i ll expect to get a mutt dog but will look up at sapsali mixed poodle or any breed will be fine for me.

you won't find sapsali anywhere. closest match is perhaps sheepdog. or silky terrier (close enough for mini-sapsali)

Thanks everyone for making me think hard about what breed of dogs i wanted.. ahhhh i will keep posting about dog over and over until i own a dog then i ll shut up. lol
