Well, that was awkward!

that doesn't mean it's impossible for faux pas to happen. I doubt you can do it right.

You mean doubt that I, personally, can do it right, or doubt that one, generally, can do it right?

Not true at all; there exist huge briefing books for trips like this that go over every detail of what behavior is appropriate, when things should happen, what greetings and toasts are to be given, etc., etc. It is definitely possible to do it right.

Sure, but if you're GOING to eat with the Q. of E. at a banquet, AND be one of the major participants, wouldn't you take all steps to be well-prepared on the protocol of it? The President is not some average Joe grabbed off the street; he has a staff which should have briefed him better, and/or he should have read and absorbed the briefing materials better, one of the two.

But he is human, isnt he?

Sure, which is why it's humorous.

I doubt he's done lasting damage to the U.S/U.K. "special relationship" which is so often mentioned.

It's only funny because generally Obama IS seen as competent and polished and all that. Even the competent and polished can have their awkward moments. The humor is that one wouldn't expect it of him.

True. State dinners are carefully orchestrated. No ad-libbing allowed. :giggle:

Thanks to youtube, gaffes take on lives of their own.

Maybe if he had his teleprompter with him all of that would've been avoided?

:giggle:

Let's impeach him! A human that makes mistakes? Unthinkable!

That means every president should have been impeached.
That'd be silly. I already said that no president is ever "gaffe-less." Some are just more prone to gaffes than others.

I like that. It shows the world that our President is more in touch with common people and that our President is just like rest of us.

I guess you prefer an elitist who is completely out of touch with the society?

You trying to give "elitist" a bad name?

When a President is on the international stage, at a major formal event with the country which is traditionally our closest ally, I would prefer to see him not make an embarassing gaffe.

But if he does, fine by me if we can have a sense of humor about it, get a laugh and carry on with our day.
