MONTREAL (AFP) - An enormous ice shelf broke away from Ellesmere Island in the Canadian Arctic last year, researchers said, warning it could be another symptom of global warming.

The 66-square-kilometer (25.5-square-mile) ice island tore away from Ellesmere, a huge strip of land in the Canadian Arctic close to Greenland.

The break occurred in August 2005 and was so violent that it caused tremors that were detected by Canadian seismographs 250 kilometers (155 miles) away, but at the time no one was able to pinpoint what had happened.

The Canadian Ice Service contacted geographer Luke Copland of the University of Ottawa, who reconstructed the chain of events by piecing together data from the seismic readings and satellite images provided by Canada and the United States.

"This loss is the biggest in 25 years, but it continues the loss that occurred within the last century," Copland told AFP, saying 90 percent of the the ice cover had been lost since the area was discovered in 1906.

"What is important and interesting is that it is sudden, quite large even," he said.

"In the past, we looked to climate change (and) thought perhaps ice shelves ... would just melt apart by losing a little piece day by day, but it now seems that when you reach some kind of threshold, when you reach that level, the whole thing just breaks apart."

Following the discovery, biologist Warwick Vincent of Laval University in Quebec, visited the icy waters of the Arctic to view the "new island."

Vincent said he had seen nothing like it in the past decade. "It really is incredible," Vincent was quoted as saying by the newspaper National Post.

"People talk of endangered animals -- well, these are endangered landscape features, and we are losing them," he said.

Louis Fortier, scientific director of ArcticNet, a Canadian Artic research network, said the massive breakoff signaled a rise in Arctic warming.

"This Ellesmere ice shelf was sheltering unique ecosystems on the planet; there are freshwater lakes which were forming above and under the ice shelf," Fortier told AFP.

"The breakup of the ice cover on Ellesmere Island has been going on for 12,000 years, but it seems to have accelerated in recent years which is another indicator, among many others, of warming of the entire Arctic cryosphere," he said, referring to low-temperature elements of weather such as ice and snow.

Canada conducts land, sea and aerial observations of the Arctic ice surface, but often these studies target certain areas and ignore vast, uninhabited areas, the environment ministry says, making satellite images crucial.

The sudden formation of a "new island" in the Arctic "is a symptom among a cluster of symptoms of global warming, the most important evidently being the spectacular redcution in the extent and thickness of the Arctic ice field," Fortier said.

In an article published in December, Canadian and US researchers predicted that by 2040 Arctic Ocean ice will nearly disappear in the summer off the north coast of Greenland and Canada, opening a maritime corridor that would reduce shipping time between Europe and Asia.

I don't believe in global warning. Ice has been melting since the Ice Age. Who knows in few thousand years could be another Ice Age.

Mmm. I understand how you feel because I used to feel that way too, but fter I saw pictures in Time Magazine of world changes and learned how quickly all of these events happened, I was very disturbed and alarmed

Even if we stop all of the bad things we have done in the past that hurt the planet, upcoming industrial countries like China and India could choose to do the same things we did and therefore continue to alter the planet.

It will be an interesting planet in 30 years when I will be approaching retirement. I wonder what the country/world will look and be like.

There was a ice shelf that broke off about the size of Rhode Island few years ago from South polar.

More ocean on this planet. The land will be gone when the earthquake destroy the land.

I may gone within few years to rejoin with my husband up heaven !

What makes you say you'll be gone in a few years? Just curious. Sorry to hear about your husband, also.

I know what you mean. It has to with the environments that's polluted in the air. That cause by man-made machines, exhausts, chemicals, etc. Anyway, I found a link and thought you or anyone might be interest in. :)

Global Warming:A Chilling Perspective

Thanks for sharing that. I like reading all the material I can find on matter like that.

yeah I saw it on news a while ago I was like interesting... never thought of anything like that...

*waiting for discover the new island* Many years snow full of surface lands... until today thaw the snow.. can see fewer island over there...

I'm very exciting and look forward the new island some area, might there have great history, heritage civilians much more... That what I like to hear..
Yes actually I'm worried about future the global warming getting increase slower extra long years within another 10 to 15 yrs later...
Wait and see what happens.

Reminds me of that movie "Day After Tomorrow". I know the movie wasnt about scientific facts or any documentation but sometimes I wonder if that kind of climatic change can really happen. Hopefully, in the future, a lot of changes will be made to be more environmental-friendly. :fingersx:

I would want to share with you. :P
Yesterday, guess what, I was getting a weird dream about global warming was coming...
there is a muddy from the earth, it was erupting, but it was not coming from volcanic or something hot. It's looked
like a erupting muddy as brown mud with glowing orange among on the sea that it make a water got rising; or something else--
just like coming from water rising
from glacier; or altogether with muddy from the earth. :eek3: Oh no!

I love anything of its my dreaming except worse than nightmares.

Oh no!! Im running away from muddy Old Faithful spitting out mud!! :eek3:

Yes many scientists are worried about global warming and some already said we have up to 10 yrs to stop or slow it down by changing from oil and coal to other power sources like wind, ethanol, etc. But with China and India going full steam ahead--building many new coal power plants, I dunno how the whole world can cooperate on this.

I live on the coast so may have to move more inland someday...

Weather Channel Founder: Global Warming ‘Greatest Scam in History’

Intro by Joe D’Aleo, Icecap, CCM
I was privileged to work with John Coleman, the founder of The Weather Channel in the year before it became a reality and then for the first of the 6 years I was fortunate to be the Director of Meteorology. No one worked harder than John to make The Weather Channel a reality and to make sure the staffing, the information and technology was the very best possible at that time. John currently works with KUSI in San Diego. He posts regularly. I am very pleased to present his latest insightful post.

By John Coleman

It is the greatest scam in history. I am amazed, appalled and highly offended by it. Global Warming; It is a SCAM. Some dastardly scientists with environmental and political motives manipulated long term scientific data to create an allusion of rapid global warming. Other scientists of the same environmental whacko type jumped into the circle to support and broaden the “research” to further enhance the totally slanted, bogus global warming claims. Their friends in government steered huge research grants their way to keep the movement going. Soon they claimed to be a consensus.

Environmental extremists, notable politicians among them, then teamed up with movie, media and other liberal, environmentalist journalists to create this wild “scientific” scenario of the civilization threatening environmental consequences from Global Warming unless we adhere to their radical agenda. Now their ridiculous manipulated science has been accepted as fact and become a cornerstone issue for CNN, CBS, NBC, the Democratic Political Party, the Governor of California, school teachers and, in many cases, well informed but very gullible environmentally conscientious citizens. Only one reporter at ABC has been allowed to counter the Global Warming frenzy with one 15 minute documentary segment.

I do not oppose environmentalism. I do not oppose the political positions of either party. However, Global Warming, i.e. Climate Change, is not about environmentalism or politics. It is not a religion. It is not something you “believe in.” It is science; the science of meteorology. This is my field of life-long expertise. And I am telling you Global Warming is a non-event, a manufactured crisis and a total scam. I say this knowing you probably won’t believe a me, a mere TV weatherman, challenging a Nobel Prize, Academy Award and Emmy Award winning former Vice President of United States. So be it.

I have read dozens of scientific papers. I have talked with numerous scientists. I have studied. I have thought about it. I know I am correct. There is no run away climate change. The impact of humans on climate is not catastrophic. Our planet is not in peril. I am incensed by the incredible media glamour, the politically correct silliness and rude dismissal of counter arguments by the high priest of Global Warming.

In time, a decade or two, the outrageous scam will be obvious. As the temperature rises, polar ice cap melting, coastal flooding and super storm pattern all fail to occur as predicted everyone will come to realize we have been duped. The sky is not falling. And, natural cycles and drifts in climate are as much if not more responsible for any climate changes underway. I strongly believe that the next twenty years are equally as likely to see a cooling trend as they are to see a warming trend.

I don't believe in Global Warmin'. There's only ONE thing I will always believe : Bible. It will tell everythin'. :)

Global warming

Mecooncat and Reba make sense. Yes, the globe we live on is warming a degree or two, and our best scientists say it will peak out and cool again.

The same alarmists we have now (or their descendants) will wring their hands and scream how the earth's going to freeze down to the core and blame it all on big business again or maybe rock music.

But it's a cycle we can read in the fossil record.

That doesn't mean we can't conserve energy and reduce waste. That makes sense, too. But it requires more proactive education and example, not reactive name-calling, the current politics.
