Trying to understand

What is PSE please???? That is a new term for me

It stands for Pidgin Signed English and is actually a combination of ASL and English. It doesn't adhere to either language standard, hence the term 'pidgin". A pidgin is a naturally evolving form of language that occurs between 2 native speakers of different languages, and contains features of both.

Oh my god. I'm afraid that I will never learn with all of this. I wish there was one form of language that I could study to help me. So I think maybe that we just need to spend more time together and he needs to teach me his form of ASL more?? But then what happens when I meet someone else who is deaf later??? Will I offend them with wrong signs if they speak a different form of the language???

I can't speak for other deaf people, but for me, no you would not offend me, I've met many different deaf people who use different signing methods, We would just learn from each others, sometimes we laugh at each others signs, but it's all good.

Yes; I think you should take up ASL classes or he can teach you ASL, if you want to communicate with him better. ;)

Well, if you learn his signing, it will make it easier to code switch if you meet someone who signs a bit differently. The best way to learn the language is from a native or near native signer. They will teach you all of the nuances. I can always tell the difference in the signing of someone who learned just by going to a class without any interaction with the deaf, and someone who learned from the deaf community. Immersion is the best way, and you have an advantage by having a friend that can allow you to immerse yourself in the language. Just don't let yourself become overwhelmed. I know it can get confusing at first, but it gets easier with time. Relax, go with the flow, and keep your sense of humor over your mistakes. All will work out fine.:)

If you and your friend are understanding towards each other as friendship stands. Both should learn from each other.

Hang in there!

Take the time and have patience. You and your friend will learn from each other.

Absolutely, I agree.

He has been teaching me ASL over the past few months. He said I am learning very quickly. He introduced me to this site to help me learn culture. I am glad because I am learning a lot. I have learned from reading threads that ASL is not just about making signs for words in the english language. That is what I used to think. That is why we didn't understand each other. Although we found other ways to understand each other. I'd like it to be easier. I understand now that ASL has a language structure of it's own and is not just signs for words that you speak like english. Now I just want to find a way to learn faster to show him that I can do it :D

Is he or has he been a member here?

Just learn SEE, everyone knows it.

ASL, not everyone knows it.

PSE, it'll come natrually because SEE helps you understand the signs, when ASL teaches you a whole new level of signs.

In ASL, you use your body much more. In SEE, you use words more than body.

Am I clear enough, if not, then ignore me.

Everyone ignores me.

Not everyone knows SEE ... in fact at this point I'd say less than 50% know and use it (in my area)

PSE - which simply means a more English-like ASL ... is likely the most widely used amongst non-native signers, simply because it allows a range of signing and grammar which ranges all the way from "very-English", to "very-ASL".

Personally, I think it's important to understand that ASL is it's own language, and that SEE/SEEII are MCE - then just focus on commnication keeping an open mind that you (and each of us) must be flexible when we meet people who sign because they will likely not sign in an identical way to us. Just like people who speak will use different phrasing, different spellings (UK, CDN, USA) etc, people who sign will also sign in a slightly different way.

Communication is the most important thing, and that means respecting each other, and being a little flexible in how we communicate.

JMHO

Despite everyone's judgement.

Go for SEE, it is very basic and very understanding. ASL is harder to understand, but once you understand the signs, you can understand the construction of ASL.

KDM...I learned ASL at the age of 25 and it took me about 5 years to become fluent in it. Will take some time but worth it! :)

Good luck!

LOL I don't ignore anyone. I appreciate everyone's input and help!!! :ty:

Everyone is so generous here with help. Thank you...

I'm working on learning more. I'm learning a lot about the structure of the ASL sentences because he and I text constantly throughout the day. Although, I don't think he speaks just ASL because he uses a lot of sentence structures that sound like exact english. But also some structure that is similar to French with last words first. would that be pidgon???

His written English will no doubt be English syntax (or very close) even if he does use ASL. I rarely see anyone who uses ASL write in ASL syntax. It does happen, but very infrequently. Written differences in syntax are probably just informal shorthand, and not really a pigin, either. The pigin woul d show up more in in sign syntax and grammar than in his written.
