Tropical storm Irene approaches

Massive wind and rain has just hit here. Irene is about 175 miles off the coast here.

Ya'll, opening the windows (venting) makes things worse. Especially when you're hanging out one during a hurricane! The "open the windows" recommendation is a myth. Also, duck tape does nothing, so do yourself a favor and don't put it on your windows. It's a bitch to get it off.

It's pretty windy here (Jacksonville, Florida)...and the River where I live is very choppy, looks somewhat "angry"!...Plan to do a lot of cooking tomorrow in case the electricity goes out this weekend...Otherwise, we're enjoying the breeze!...No rain as of yet, but we expect it this weekend.

Our rain just stopped again. We are forecasted for rain today and tomorrow. Saturday and Sunday's forecast? Hot and sunny, up to 96-100.

Wow! Right after I posted...down came the Rain!....now it's pouring cats & dogs....

Tonight, my hubby and I are going shopping for emergency stuff to update our emergency kit. The forecasted track just shifted more west bringing the eye close to Baltimore.

Don't forget to fill up your tubs. Won't be able to flush toliet without that. And fill up as many containers as you can, in addition to bottled water.

If we ever have to get to the point of filling tubs again, in the new house we will be in a pickle as they say. There will be no bathtubs. At least, I keep 6 gallon jugs of water in the deep freeze and another 6 gallons bottles in the utility room. We also have at least 2-3 flats of bottled water.

You can just get a water tank like the ones at the survival stores. I think that Academy has some, too. Ya'll have better codes than we do. Maybe you won't need it.

A couple of really helpful links:

http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/

http://www.storm2k.org/ (forum has preparednessd info)

The 2nd site has forums so that you can communicate with people in your area. It's a great resouce when you want to know what's going on in local areas. Also, the radio stations kept everyone connected and updated. Finding something open after a storm can be a challenge and the radio person announced when certain things started opening again. Be sure that you have a battery operated radio with plenty of batteries.

ETA: Here's a link directly to the thread specifically for Irene:

No bathtubs at all??? I don't use mine often but a hot soak feels so good when your muscles are telling you you over did it (from fun or work).

We are having 2 shower stall only with dual shower heads. Each bath will have both a short person and at least one tall person using it. Hubby, daughter and I in one and I am the short on at 5'5", he is 6'5 and she is 6'4. Other bath will be my mother and my son. She is 5'5" and he is 6'3".

We opted for no tub as mother and I are unable to step over the edge into the tub. Our house will have a lot of custom features for both deaf access and mobility issues.

I had the "privilege" of experiencing sitting with my family in that long evacuation line for almost two days, including no bathrooms, and watching the armed convoys of prisoners go by. The closest hotel reservations we could get before we left were in Tennessee.

Golly.

When some people tried to evacuate in Houston, some people died in the traffic. So sad. Evacuate really early, if you evacuate at all.

Did you look at any walk in tubs? When I just did a search with Google it pulled up so many I hesitate to leave a link. Even the small town I live in has places that sell them The idea is that a door opens into the tub resulting in a very low step. Some were even shown with a ramp resulting in no step! The water pressure then helps keep it from leaking.

I don't have a reason to need it but really like a hand held shower rather than one at a fixed height.

Uh oh.
Looks like it will be a bad one all along the eastern coast.

They are too expensive. We checked into them and the contractor said they tend to leak after a while. He is building in a seat into each shower and wall niche's for the shampoo bottles and such.
