Travis the monkey killed for going on a rampage while mental

It's modern pictures of the then Nascar Racecar driver, St. James Davis.
He lives in California, not too far from me actually, around a 30 minute drive.

He used to own a pet chimp and won a settlement case against a small claims or local county court thing, against his previous ape "being a threat" to the city. He then gave the chimp away to a refugee/sanctuary area for monkeys. In 2005, one day he was visiting the sanctuary for the chimp's birthday, 2 "normal" chimps broke loose of their cage and "zerged" (to attack) Mr. Davis and his wife. Mr. Davis lost a nose, some fingers, a lot of flesh from his buttocks, and his testicles, and a lot of blood. His wife lost a finger or more.

These chimps were the same as Travis I believe, except that they didn't have any known mental illness.

In the original article, it'll state that despite his Lyme disease, Travis was treated like a normal human being - he was potty trained, eating trained, ate dinner like a normal person, played with human activities. I believe somewhere they stated they "treated him with respect like a person."

For the Davis incident, you can search it up by searching news articles on St. James Davis.

Thanks for explaining. If the animals were in the sactury they may have been there because they were mistreated previously or they might have been angry about being abandoned in that way.

Has there been any update on the condition of the woman who was just attacked?

Not alot. They are still Investigating on the chimp's medical records, his brain, his body and such. His body was removed from the house the day it happened. His head was taken to the state lab to study his brain and his body was taken to some kind of animal clinic for autopsy. Lucky the victim who was attacked by the chimpanzee has survived, but is in very bad shape at the hospital now.

The owner of the chimp might be facing criminal charges. A pet owner can be held responsible if she or he KNEW that an certain animal can be a threat to others.

The owner put the drug in the tea that the chimp was drinking but the tea was not disolved, as it seems like he didnt really completely take the drug...so we dont know that yet...still examing his body.

I assume it was all mainly a freak accident. Nobody is at fault there...thou she should've known that apes such as an chimpanzee shouldnt be kept as a pet anyway.

The reason why chimp attack is rare compared to pit bull attack is because pitbulls are "common dogs" and there are few chimps as pet.

Actually, let me explain why I use pitbull attack as an example to compare with Chimpanzee attack...

I beleive that you know that chimpanzees are wild everywhere in Africa - they run away and hide in the forest when they see human adult. Yes, they would hurt human adult if he/she go near them or bother them... Sure, they hunt other animals or human baby for foods. Pitbull STILL attack you no matter either you go near them or bother them or not (I remember from read the artical somewhere that a boy killed by pit bull attack when pit bull was out of the owner's property)... The pit bull's owner kept said that she don't understand why her pitbull do that. She described her pitbull as a loving pet....

Like what pitbull's owner said that her pitbull was loving and sweet dog until happened for a first time... like what the people said positive thing what they know Travis...

Yes, I can understand why wild animals should not keep as domestic pet in the house but I don't understand why the people manage to keep pitbulls as the pet when they know their reputation???

I saw on TV about Travis yesterday... It says that it's something do with Xanax to drive Travis crazy... after know Travis as an extremely socialized for long 15 years... He brushed his teeth, dressed himself, went to toilet, watch on TV, opens door etc.... His social behavior skill shows itself that he was being loving raise by his "mom". If his behavior is very bad then she would not keep him at YEARS ago instead of 15 years later... I didn't know that Travis was on TV commericals in the past...

I has to agree that Travis's crazy behavior is something do with Xanax.. I think his "mom" should check with the vet how to calm Travis down first instead of gave Xanax tea to him... I guess it would not happen if "mom" didn't give Xanax to him...

But even as investigators try to figure out exactly what triggered Travis's attack (he had been suffering from Lyme disease, which in rare cases is linked to psychotic behavior), the reality is that a chimpanzee living among people is simply a ticking time bomb. No matter how many years it has lived peacefully as a pet, a chimpanzee is not a domesticated animal and can snap without warning. "They are wild animals, and all wild animals are potentially dangerous," says Colleen McCann, a primatologist with the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) and New York's Bronx Zoo. "They are not pets. This is tragic, but it's not surprising."

See red bond...

It does the same with pitbull or other dogs as well... It was happeend to neice of my co-worker at 3 years ago... I posted about them in pitbull threads at 3 years ago. Pitbull was raised loving for 5 years until suddenly she hurt neice... She bite and tear niece's underarm and had 18 or 20 stitches... The owner were terrible upset and don't know why pitbull do that... it's too suddenly to them... I know it's not just pitbull but other dogs as well, also cats as well... it drive them crazy and hurt you for no reason...

If you want to know the true story about "Cheeta" the Feb. 6, 2009, issue of The Week magazine had a long feature story about him. Sadly, it proves that all those other stories about Cheeta were not true. The "Cheeta" that is publicized now was never in the Tarzan movies. He's only about 50 years old. It was kind of disappointing. The full story was published by The Washington Post.

Yes, I am totally speechless after read 2 links, you posted to response Steel's post.. :(

some animals happen to have something in their minds like dieases that affect their minds to get confused then hurt people.

I had two dobermans in the past. they were wonderful sweetie doggies. One day, each of them at the different time almost bit my mom for no reasons. later, we found out that doberman had tumor in his brain and happened the same thing to our other dog. We had enough with dobermans. Seemingly that dobermans very common to get tumor in their brains. =( The whole point is that any kind of animals from small size to huge size are still dangerous. cats are dangerous too.

lol even dogs can kill you too. Any animals can be dangerous no matter what.

Yeah... Did you know that French lady was being mauled by her own pet Golden Retriever and got facial transplant? What about this?

It's extremely rare to know that human being was being attack by family dog...

On TV this morning, they said that there was some warning
signs years ago that Travis did things like he bit this lady's
hand for no apparent reason, stopping traffic, things like
that. So it was nothing like recently when the owner gave
him Xanax, had anything to do with why he brutally attacked
her neighbor. He is just simply a crazy wild animal, not a
domestic pet, period.

Exactly - my friend was being attacked by her own cat... and found out that her cat was mentally sick ...

Autopsies are performed on humans.

Necropsies are performed on animals.
Several specialist surgeons performed seven hours of surgery on the woman.

Well, if your pets show signs of agressiveness or
something not normal, then maybe you should take
it to the Vet and have it checked out? If the pet
is mentally sick, then maybe that is why they act
out like that. :dunno:
If i had a pet that is not acting normal, then i would
have it put to sleep!

Yes, my friend was forced to put her cat sleep for sake of her children. Her cat was loving for long years until suddenly... Her cat was hissed and jump on her like lion's attack to human being and then bite and scratch her face. It's not normal...

The vet confirmed mentally sick due her age... but it's extremely rare, the Vet said...

Yes, she noticed something on her cat's behavior... become into unfriendly cat... and bite and scratch when she or her children want to pat or cuddle her.... something like that - "LEAVE ME ALONE"... My friend never thought about attack when she thought it's something do with cat age... when she questioned me via MSN chat... Her cat was 12 years old that's time. Few days later after that, her cat suddenly jumped to attack her like lion did to human being or animal... bite her neck and then scratch her face when she was about feed the food for her...

Hey--I love pythons.

As long as they are in enclosed room with a window for us to look at!

WHAT!!!!

Python look at you from the window, make him feel hungry for want to seize you and then swallow you up for his lunch... I can image when I look python's face from the window :cold:

Has anyone even looked at the pictures of St. James Davis?

I'm not going to have the images displayed in the thread for the sake of respect, but have a look and see (and thanks to botti for the original heads up)

Other countries seem perfectly okay with wild monkeys (and possibly apes) roaming around their cities.

Terrible... :(
