tired old scare tactics

Reba's the correct word usage Nazi now. Can't stand to let even one of my mistakes slide, huh?
Sorry, but there's a HUGE difference in meaning between ancestor and descendant. One doesn't need to be a Nazi to appreciate that. :)

With the way internet is now...the wealth of information out there....

it is kind of hard to know whether it is false information or fact.

And with the amount of people harping on wanting FACTs I just go to the library for all of my research papers in school.

Nah, not anti-ebook.

I saw it. :) I know who the students are, and what their grades were.

He doesn't care if students pass or fail. That's our responsibility. However to say that people who use computers are more educated is a false assumption.

it is a false assumption that people who don't have computers are more educated. however - i have never said a computer makes people more educated. I said people who have computers have an advantage over those who doesn't.

What's the photo of? From what I can tell in the thread, it sounds like universal Internet access is being used as a scare tactile. :giggle:

I have to agree with the posters who say Internet access is an advantage. There are tons of advantages to the Internet.

1) A window into the world for people who don't have access to a library
Whether it's cause someone lives in the countryside or cause they're not very mobile cause of a disability, they can't get to the library. Where I live there's no way for me to independently get to the library. No sidewalks, 6-lane highways, no bus, and no one to drive me.

2) An easier way to alternative formats
It's hard to get large print books and books on audio but if you can read an e-book you can use a built-in screen reader or zoom software (like ZoomText)

3) More education options
Online courses allow people with a tight schedule to fit in classes more easily cause they don't have to worry about having to get somewhere and be there several times a week. They also give easier access to anyone who has a hard time getting around for whatever reason.

As for how accurate the information is, that's all about how you use the Internet. There are reliable academic-oriented databases and most of them are already narrowed down to the field of interest in question, much like print books.

90% of the blind population don't even know how to read Braille. I should know Braille, but I don't. Most of the blind support there are auditory only. If blind technology wasn't so auditory-dependent, maybe I would be inclined to use them more often. Braille technology is waaaaaaaaaay too expensive and is often used as a last-resort technology.

Now, Hear Again is lucky enough to know Braille. However people like dreama... are not so fortunate in understanding how Braille typewriters and such work. Noticed her disappearance?

True that. And of the blind people who learn Braille later in life (like me), many don't get up to nearly the same speed as congenitally blind children.

Which are all moot point if you're the type of personality that is easily distracted by multimedia.

Who said Internet has to be multimedia? You can do one thing at a time on the Internet.

*sighs*

WHen you're using the Internet, all it take is one click to go to YouTube.

Some people go to study with the intention of reading an e-book or a PDF, then they get bored... then they go to YouTube. They click for hours watching videos, but never actually read anything-- then their study session is moot point because they're unable to focus. Those same people are able to research BETTER if they print out the material (which most of them DON'T because they're stringy with the budget of printing paper) or taking a book out of the college's library.

and even people without computer. it takes one look at tv/radio/outside to get distracted.

which goes back to my example about Jillio A and Jillio B. So are you saying Jillio B would do research better than Jillio A?

well-said CJB about internet access = an advantage. Here's a perfect example. an ambitious project called One Laptop per Child aka OLPC for Africa.

And with people on computer...

They're also distracted by TV/radio/outside AS WELL. ;) So it's compounding already. :D

Now all Jillio said is... the only advantage Jillio A will have is speed. Period. It's a huge advantage, but 90% of the college students out there don't use it to their advantage, sadly. However that is FORTUNATE for the ones with good working habits, because it give them an edge against those who fool around. Even though they can't catch up with the 5-10% that are using the Internet for what it is intended for, at least they're ahead of the ones that are mucking around. One could even argue at the end of the day-- those with good study habits offline will be on an even playing field as those with good study habits online in the long run anyway.

There are plenty of ways to lose focus even if you're not using the Internet. Turn the TV on, get yourself a drink, all of that is very easy to do, especially if you're bored. And the easiest distractor of all is there no matter what: your thoughts. Anyone can start going off on a tangent in their minds while studying, regardless of if it's online or in a library.

I think the only disadvantage of computers is that it is very hard to sit and read for hours on it. The light on the background does bother people when they try to read tiny letters. Which is why we all hate reading long posts. On the other hand, Some Ebook fixed that problem with lighting. The advantage is that you can find informations that you need quickly for your research so you can study further on the subjects .... with books.

Anyway, it doesn't mean people have gotten dumbed down because of computers because of all these crazy websites (there are crazy books as well) . People will always be people in real life or on the computer. that is, if they didn't have a computer, there will always be something that distract them from getting in depth of their research -- party anyone?

Wow...I've never seen such a prolonged attempt to make a statement say something it never said.:laugh2:

I hope that day will never come.

Too bad it will come though. I do know authors are not a big fan of it because they haven't worked out the copyrights kink out for electronics yet.

I don't like the thought of it, either. My books are prized possessions and friends. There is nothing like holding that book in your hands and getting lost in a wonderful story.

Another disadvantage of ebooks is that you can't read 'em in the bathtub..
