Have they ever done that? Before computers, no one really went to the library to get their informations either....
Huh? Before I had an internet capable computer I practically lived at the library. As a kid I worked my way thru the book shelves reading whatever was interesting. As a college student I used library resources for research.

Before the internet, how else did people research things?

Jiro, you young whippersnapper! Us old folks got our education before computers and we are very educated. There's this place called a LIBRARY and you research with DEWEY DECIMAL FILES. We typed our papers on TYPEWRITERS. I know that's hard to believe! lol
I started with a manual typewriter.

You must have lived near the library. When I was growing up I was on the country side miles and miles from the library.

a better question is - why is one thinking computer is more of a distraction than useful tool? why is one not acknowledging the computer's usefulness when in fact one is using computer for his gain? :hmm:

We already did... acknowledge it.

However we also put in a clause... just because you have a computer, it doesn't make you better or more educated.

Not everyone's personality is tailored for it. For some people, if they're in front of a TV (before the Internet-era), they are distracted. Some people are distracted by the great outdoors. Some people can't stand being in an empty room without doing things to themselves while studying.

So the only advantage to computer is speed.

in school library, but they have very little interest in reading or going to the public library (remember I was talking about public library, not school library)... but they sure do like talking to people.

HUGE advantage.

The school library at the deaf school was just a laughing matter. It wasnt a library at all. I wonder how much was wasted into having it.

talking in library? SSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHHH :mad2:

Oh, Lighthouse, books are much better than some unconfirmed source on the internet.:cool2:
you don't understand, those book are antique books that once was in the library. I can confirm it too because I read some of them in the library today.

which is why I used an example - "person A and person B" (same person but different tools) with same goal.

mind you - I'm assuming that the person A using computer is using quality database to research... not some google site or wikipedia. It can be done at library with a computer vs. a person doing this at library with no computer.

And assuming they're not watching YouTube or browsing Facebook on the side while they are researching.

I have to LOL at this...........

Serious? Even with youtube/facebook...

You're at an advantage with reading scholarly databases while in a public library you don't have access to that without the technology.

So, they were bragging about their days of reading and researching, and some of could have been one of those books

Well.. with outdated books... it could be like:

The earth is flat.

We now know that is not true. All one has to do is find another source to refute it and correct their knowledge.

With unconfirmed sources it's could be like:

The sky is pink, and those who see it as blue are colourblind.

That is not true, but there's no source to confirm it's either true or false to correct it.

I have a 400-years old herpetology textbook; well it's not that old, but it's a reprint. Even though much of it is outdated... over half of it is still relevant to today.

I have seen students who studied together. The ones that stuck with books only passed the exams.

The ones that spent all their time entertaining themselves... with the SAME e-book in front of them... failed.
