Tipping System

No, there is no law in tipping, this is capitalism, government don't control the income, except for minimum wage.

Fair enough for those with low wages in US. I still don't like this tipping business at all as in Australia and New Zealand, tipping is non-existent. Therefore, it's foreign to me.

I know how you feel,Ozzie. Every time, I'm in the US, I'm always puzzled how much to leave in tip. I think $2 or above is safe to say, no?

DVDFreaker, this single mother needs a lot of flexibility if she doesn't have family support to mind her kids while she's at work.

You should get this book written by a waitress who talked about how to make ends meet on a minimum wage etc. Don't know the title or name of author, though.

My friend in NYC worked as a waitress and said she gets like $20 per shift plus tips, but she has to share her tips among with the other staff.

I tips waiteress many times. Depending how good they serve, how kind they are. We are not that picky tho. I'm just a big tipper myself. Sometime I tips 20% to 30% if they are really good. My uncle is one biggest tipper. He tips waiteress over $100 and run off. ( he was a millioniare back then and I witnessed him tipped waiteress :eek2: over $100 and he told him keep it keep it, I don't want $100!! Go go go LOL.)

It is actually rude not to tip waiteress if they are doing great job. It's not fair for waiteress working hard with low salary and struggling end meets.

I had similiar occassion that 15 years ago, Group of deafie including us went to Steak N Ale restaurant. After dinner, I tipped the waiteress for my own food but rest of deafie (I remmy about 10 to 12 peoples) refuse to tip, some just drop a penny and left. The waiteress was upset over it. The next visit we came. Waiteress were rude and told everyone tip it or don't come back! Wow. Actually, it's deafie fault for being rude at first place.

One time I didn't give ONE waiteress tip becasue he was very rude and unfriendly. We paid for drinks and left the restaurant without ordering food.

If I were millioniare, I would LOVE to watch waiteress's face goes :jaw: when they see big tips (cash only!!). I would rather tip and run away. LOL.

I don't agree with this method because other staff could be slacking off on the job while the other work their ass off to get good tips.

In Russia, there's no different minimum wages for waitresses but they often do share the tips with other workers. Generally, Russians normally don't tip but many foreigners do.

I usually tip well as I've worked as a buser in a restruant. If you give me the wrong food twice, I won't tip. Once is excusable but twice?

If there was no tip then the pay would be at 6.15. And if there was the tip then the pay would be 3.50. Get my drift.

Last summer a day before I fly to NYC. It was in Ohio. We went to Ihop for breakfast and we had a horrible watier. RR spoke to the manager and the manager got a different waitress. So we were happy and tip her well.

See the waiter was so rude and have no patience with us as a deafies. He was tapping his pen on a pad and his eyes was rolling around. He took off and be gone for a long time then come back. Geez so that is why we decided to get a different waitress.

Only one time, i tipped 40 bucks along with only 25 bucks worth of the dinner. My friends was like, "MAN! give her 2 bucks or less". I told them,"So what? let her enjoy to have tips that are greater and you just never know that she need that for tonight- gas? feed to her family or so? we just never know, Its her lucky night". Then, they decided to tip more around $5-10 bucks, woot! i helped them to realized how hard work did they served.

It's an embarrassment for me because I'm deaf, and thanks to those Deaf Gallaudet students for being a lousy tipper. It is considered rude to not to tip, Waiters and Waitresses work their asses off, and and is this a thanks they get? Don't be surprised if you're a regular customer, and the waitress/waiter knows that you don't tip, you will not get a good service. I wouldn't want to be in your place. I've always tip, even if the service was poor I give them 10 percent, if the service was so so, I will give them 15 percent, if the service was excellent, I would give them 20 to 30 percent. :)

ah, that costs her more.. she could have approached another way.

gee freaker, it's POLITE to tip, what part don't you get?

one time-- ONE time many years ago when I worked at sports store as an
apparel sale (responsible for unlocking fitting rooms, organizing clothes, etc.) one guy with his wife and two young children was asking me for directions to bathroom. at first I didn't catch him (yougottalovemustaches!), the wife repeated him, I then guided them to bathroom. on their way back to outside the guy tapped me, handing me $20 bill - I out of awe had to say no (store's policy) but he took my wrist, opened my hand, nodded his head down, please, yours. - insisted me to take it, closed my hand gently and left without looking back.

not only that every penny of that miracle helped, a tip can make a life difference... I'll never forgive him lol.

Yes Cheri, I agree. I can't remember the last time I had invited my closest friend out to eat with me - I believe four years ago was the last time we went out to eat together. Lack of tipping wasn't the only reason, but my friend kept the waitress waiting over ten minutes to decide what she wanted to eat. I didn't really mind covering tips for my friend. I don't mind to eat out with my two other deaf friends - they have some classes!

Now I wish I know where my aunt is now so I could ask her that question. She was a waitress on and off over the years in several different states. It has been over 15 years since I last saw my aunt. :(

Received it in my email for you all to read below -

WAITRESS ARRESTED FOR CREDIT CARD FRAUD, COMPLAINED THAT DEAF DON'T TIP

Washington, DC. Police have taken into custody a former waitress at G&G II Italian restaurant, she will be charged with credit card fraud, a felony, after receiving several complaints from Gallaudet students for unauthorized charges on their account. In the intake court hearing, the waitress complained to the judge that Gallaudet students who frequented her restaurant never leave a tip, and that she is struggling to make ends meet as a single mother of two. "These Deaf students are able to afford a $30 meal, if only they can put down $3, just 10%, that will be enough, but often my children goes to school hungry." The waitress was released on bail, and ordered to pay an restitution to all those affected. Washington Post investigators noted that the waitress always add the tip to the credit card without the student knowledge, this was able to go on quite awhile as students often don't bother to check the receipts they signed. The judge ordered that postings be put up on the Gallaudet campus, notifying them that anyone who was a victim of the crime, to send a copy of the credit bill to the court within 30 days. The waitress made a plea bargaining that she will reimburse the students 23%, 15% as normal tip, 8% as punitive compensation, plus 42 cents postage (new rate). It ain't much but it can be significant for those who frequented the establishment. The judge took this step in an effort to avoid having them file a class-action lawsuit, which will be a burden on the already backlogged court system. University officials are planning to add "tipping" workshops in their orientation program for incoming Freshmen in the fall.

It´s a feeble excuse to blame deafies for poor tipping... *sigh *

Why do she continue to work as waitress when she know in first place that tipping system is not an obligation. Right? If yes, then no excuse to blame anybody for poor tipping but herself... If she know what kind of job waitress work then look for better job.

If she keep on complaint then job is not right for her.

Wow.. That's suck...

My sister worked as Waitress and I'd been seeing how earn she gets money from paycheck and tips... Tips always being very high than paychecks because she earns tips everyday when she works but paycheck in every two weeks and it's still low and not enough for her bills, gas, kids and everything. Good thing that they do get tips to help them out than leaving them suffer...

For me to leaving tip, just more depend on how their works and respect for customers. I will decide from my mind to leaving how much tip for them if their work is great and their respect for me is good enough then I will leave more than 5 dollars or so, depends how much on the food that I pay for. If lousy then could be one dollar or nothing with the note to tell them the reason why I leave them a dollar or nothing, they will understand and improve themselves. I think it's helping. :dunno:

It isn't hard to find another job dude and plus, if she doesnt' like it, she can quit and find another job or work 2 jobs, she doesn't really need my tip but if she really really needs it, I'll give her a penny, that's better than no tip
I hope that you're kidding, and just trying to get a rise out of us.

Oh yeah, forgot one more thing, even she works for below the minmum wage, it doesn't give her the right to charge to credit cards for tips without the owners' credit cards permission
That's true. But that still doesn't excuse patrons from leaving tips.

Wait a minute! You didn't realize that the waitress could be giving horrible service that she doesnt' get any tips because of it
If her service is horrible, customers should complain to the manager so she can be fired. Apparently, her service was not terrible because the customers kept coming back.

I forgot to add one more thing, I never tip to waitress, I just feel that they have a paycheck that they earned and they don't need my tip, that is just my opinion, the only thing I tip is strippers

You got wrong opinion... my daughter used to be a waitness... said she got paid about 1.29 per hour and she depended on tips to make the ends meet...
