Steve, I guess what you are doing would be stereotyping officers. Because you see one in a 7-11 doesn't mean he spends his day there screwing off. Unlike you, police officers do not get a 'lunch break' or any break at all. They eat when they can. I stay away from a lot of the junk food (like 7-11) for health reasons but I do stop in on occasion and buy a bottled water. I am guilty of buying a salad from a Wawa, but with a 10 hour shift, I'm believe I'm entitled to stop in and buy a salad...maybe even chat with the clerk for 5 minutes. When you work, law requires that you get so many breaks for the hours that you work. We don't have that luxury. If I'm on a call and I have to go to the bathroom...do think my job 'stops' so I can use the john? No...I have to hold it (sometimes for hours)...and unfortunately sometimes that potty break will be at the 7-11 as well.
Let me tell you what my week consisted of this past week, and other members of AD can attest to what happened. I worked this past Thursday, and was scheduled from 10pm until around 7:30 am. Our line-up is before 10pm...On Thursday I woke up around 6pm for dinner, etc after getting about 5 hours sleep. I got to the station around 9:30pm. We ran our asses off all night. The only pause I got was around 4:30 am (again, only 7-11 and wawa open at that hour to get a bite to eat). By 5am, we were hopping again and that continued until the end of my shift. When I got off, I went home and took a shower as I had mud on me from a footchase that night...when was the last time you had to chase somebody through the woods at 3am? I was supposed to have been off on Friday.
Anyhow, after being home for just a couple of hours (on Friday), I get a phone call. A man has stabbed his girlfriend..she is outside of the house but the man is refusing to come out. Part of my job is to attempt to talk these people out so it doesn't end violently (no, we don't barge in with guns drawn and shooting what moves). This went on for several hours...finally got the guy out peacefully as many of these events do. I now have tons of paperwork to do because of this...remember, this is my day off. By the time everything is over, I have gone close to 34 hours with no sleep. I was able to get about 3 hours sleep but then had to get up for some of my personal stuff that I schedule for my day off.
So steve, its not all hanging out at 7-11 eating donuts, etc. Many officers work on their days off, and many times they are either ordered in or forced in. Fortunately, barricade situations are somewhat rare with maybe 1 or 2 a month so I don't always get called in. There are also other people on rotation, but this past friday just happened to be mine.
So Steve, when was the last time you went for 34 hours with no sleep (and worked most of that?). When was the last time you had a 10 hour shift and were not able to even take a piss....and pray that you don't have to go #2 during your shift? When was the last time somebody got in your face and said "I'm gonna kill you!"....or when was the last time somebody with AIDS spat on you? When was the last time you had to tell a husband that his wife would not be coming home? When was the last time you saw somebody full of bulletholes but still breathing...and knew you couldn't do anything to save him? When was the last time you saw a car accident where a car caught on fire and the people couldn't get out...and you couldn't get them out but you could hear them screaming and watched them burn to death? (This is why I'm against aggresive drivers who run red lights).
When was the last time you were driving down the road and somebody through a rock through your window because he doesn't like 'pigs'? When was the last time you saw a person with a gun....and you had to chase that person into dark woods knowing that he could shoot you at any time? When was the last time somebody was in the projects randomly firing shots at people and while everyone is running OUT of the neighborhood, you were running INTO it? When was the last time you pulled up onto a scene with a woman with her throat cut and watching another officer hold a towel onto her throat hoping to save her life but knowing she wouldn't make it (this woman actually pulled through thankfully).
When was the last time you had a mother pleading for you to help her because their daughter was now a crack addict and was turning tricks in the worst part of town? When was the last time a 'white boy' like you went into a bad neighborhood..and had to get out and try to get information from 50 people who 'didn't see anything'?. I know you've probably made a wrong turn in baltimore before, so why didn't you get out of your car and just chat with the people in that neighborhood?
When was the last time you heard a co-worker screaming for help on a radio...a co-worker that you are close to? I'm not talking about screaming for help because the soda machine needs more syrup (like at your movie theater)...I'm talking about an officer who has had somebody attack him and is now shooting at him.
Steve, all of the above is something that I have experienced in the short time I have been with our department. In fact, I am very new with our department. Something else you need to remember is that I am NOT a patrol officer....those guys see much worse than I have. Most of my time is spent popping 50 year old men trying to hook up with 13 year old girls. My time is also spent getting the crack dealers off the streets in the worst neighborhoods in the city, or serving warrants on robbery and rape suspects.
I am lucky that I don't have to deal with all of the stuff that I mentioned above on a daily basis (our patrol officers do). I see it because I just happened to be close by and respond when needed...not just because its my job but because its in my nature to help other people.
And after all that, I still come here and put up with your crap and your personal attacks against me...and don't make it personal against you as you have done to me.
I additionally have to answer to friends who want to know why I don't talk about my 'feelings' after a bad day. Sometimes I do not want to talk about work, or what I'm feeling. I also have to answer to people like you who do nothing but insult people, and doesn't even have the remote ability to be nice to anyone who does something for them. I don't ask for any thanks...I don't even ask for your respect. I still come here while you attack me in public and private...and not once have I told you to screw yourself after your comments both in public and in private. I don't even put you on 'Ignore' because I'm still interested in seeing your participation in this forum.
