The Tea Party are RACIST!!

Well, that would not have been helpful for Obama. If 10% of each race was racist enough to vote that way, the numbers would be pretty strongly in favor of McCain/Palin. :giggle:

I didn't say by %.....I said number of people

You mean, you did not watch countless hours of sitcoms? :cool2:
I know who Urkel is and The Simpsons is the greatest show in all of space and time (including the future). I just have no idea what he meant.

I think it did an admirable job of answering your question. Or maybe I am still weird.

I remember Howard Cosell lost his job as football announcer for making a comment about "Look at the little monkey run" when describing a black athlete. He was a strong advocate for racial equality, but it did not matter. Many cries went out for his head.

Nobody can determine the intent of the sender of this email. We can only speculate. I do know that there is nothing racist if a white person is depicted as a monkey/watermelon eater. If someone made a comment about "Obama loves his watermelon" the racist overtones would be there. That is just the way it is. Rice eater = Asian. Bean eater = Mexican. Those are not my depictions, but they are phrases commonly used in a racist manner.

Actually he didn't lose his job....but yes I remember the event well. He had to explain the next week

Jimmy "the Greek" lost his job on NFL Today for saying blacks were better athletes because they were bred to play the game.

He was pressured to apologize, but he refused. He left the program after that season, using the "I am bored with this" speech. It could very well be that he was asked to leave.

I remember Jimmy the Greek thing, along with the Al Campanos "blacks might not have the necessities to be a manager at the big league level" interview.

That would be naive of you. It would mean that more blacks (by percentage) voted racially. I cannot fathom that whites would vote for a candidate of another party as the main decision-maker being that he was black. Same with blacks voting for a white candidate because he is white. I think the percent is more likely pretty close to the same. That would tell me that more whites in total numbers voted for McCain strictly because he is white than blacks voted for Obama because he is black. If 100,000 voters of each race voted for "one of their own" then that would paint the blacks are more racist by percentage. :hmm:

.

True....that is why I used the word explained. The next week He explained the he was referring to the player's (Ricky Sanders I think it was) small size and elusiveness....but he wouldn't apologize. In that was.....given his record....I don't blame him

Oops....I was wrong it was Alvin Garrett....I knew it was a Redskin

Yes. The Smurf/Fun Bunch days. Sadly, I watched the MNF with the monkey comment and the Campanos interview on "Nightline" live as these moments occured. The Cosell comment did not cause me to feel anything was wrong. When Campanos made his comments, my head went down...:ugh:

Totally unfounded and ridiculous..... "majority" :laugh2:

The country is split. Many hated Bush for his policies and many feel the same about obama's...... Then some of us dislike both. :)

That's fine..you can hate Obama's policy but keep his race out of it. When I mean "you" I am speaking generally.

Actually, no one ever answered it. There was a lot of ducking and weaving. But no one answered. No one said they also deplored the images of Bush (possibly excepting Reba, who said she was against denigrating cartoons and e-mails). No one seemed to have any problem with that huge billboard of Bush made up of monkey images.

Maybe if we all treated Obama with the respect shown to Bush, maybe we'd all be ok?

Oh...wait....

Maybe draw a pic of Obama without any reference to race. You gotta admit...black people have been compared to monkeys so by using this particular animal only makes the Tea Party look like racist fools. They could have used another animal or something else if it had nothing to do with Obama being black.

not necessarily by party....I think it was that way in the primary too. I heard many whites talk about the opportunity to be on the side if history.

And again I am saying basing their vote solely on skin color.

There is no way of knowing of course.

More than one person explained the socially historical differences in comparing a black man to a monkey and comparing a white man to a monkey. The answer is in those explanations.

The answer to that question is implicit in the posts already made. Ducking and weaving? Um...

Okay, I'll spell it out if that's what you'd like:

No, the comparisons of Bush to a monkey were not racist. How could they be? Bush is a white male. There is no historical context of racial epithets being made towards white people by comparing them to monkeys. There is a historical context of comparing politicians to monkeys, as you pointed out, and it is certainly in bad taste. Those caricatures comparing politicians to monkeys and apes seem to have protection under the guise of "political satire," but in the case of Obama, that protection is superseded by the racial epithet.

Is that more clear? I'm not even sure why you're asking the question. I don't want to sound dogmatic here, but seriously, I don't understand how anybody can question whether or not this is racist.

Exactly. I thought it was abundantly clear why there is a difference in the comparisons, and why one can be considered a racial comment and the other isn't. Methinks some are trying too hard not to see the racial tone in order to claim that they possess no feelings that could any way be construed as racism. It is actually a common occurrance in many.:P

No doubt.

Exactly. As WriteAlex and I have both stated; if you wish to criticize, criticize on a political basis. When criticized in other ways that have virtually nothing to do with his performance, racism is very suspect. Even when the individual doesn't recognize their own racism.
