Shooting star and meteoriods are the same thing. They just fly and burn up when it enters the atmosphere, some of them fly by out in the space. Most of them are tiny ones. Shooting star is just a old name for someone who thought a star is falling from the sky, but it's really not a star. It's just how the meteriod breaks up into small pieces and burn up in the sky. I never seen that type, but only seen occassional meteriods passing by and dissappear in outer space.
2 types that we see.
1. Burning up meteriods
2. the ones that pass by in outer space.
Intresting indeed, Nice theroy, Everyone have their own theroies. But still that doesn't explian why it shoot and disappear at super speed of no more than 1 second at that range. Now that is not a meteoriods, correct me if I'm wrong. There is something mysteries outside the atmosphere in outer space. It doesn't really sums up or makes sense.
Seq and Latino Heat...
Sequoias is right most are tiny and will burn up.. usually will not hit the earth.. big as car did hit Russia long time ago. so it is possible that it will hit Earth one day... I like to add that Meteors are actually fallen debris from a comet.
All About Meteors
A meteor shower is a spectacular sight to see, but what exactly causes it? Though often referred to as a shooting star, a meteor is not a star at all. Meteors are actually fallen debris from a comet.
At night, a meteor shower is visible to us as quick streaks of light. Meteor showers occur as the debris traveling in the path of its parent comet enters the Earth’s atmosphere. The heat produced by the ram pressure upon atmospheric entry is what creates the streak of light. Most meteors are destroyed during this process. Those that make the journey all the way to the ground are known as meteorites.
While meteors can often be seen any night, there are certain times of year where the rate of visible meteors is much higher. Commonly occurring every year or so, a meteor shower or meteor storm can be predicted right down to the peak viewing hours.
Depending on where the meteoroid stream meets the Earth, meteors will appear to fall from one particular region in the sky. This is why a meteor shower is often named by the constellation from which its meteors appear to fall. For example, the Perseid meteor shower was named after the constellation Perseus because its meteors appear to be falling from a point in this particular region of the sky.
A meteor shower is best experienced far outside any large city, away from bright lights. For more information on meteors or a meteor shower in particular, simply choose any meteor article or other interactive meteor feature below. got this article from this link-

also.... another thing is.. the ones that pass by in outer space may be satellites?
http://www.space.com/satellite/ there are hundreds of satellites up in the sky right now. they look like meteors but they move slow in the sky and will not burn up. u can see them if you know what time it is.. by going to
Heavens-Above Home Page and register and u can find ISS or Hubble Space Telescope, other satellites etc.
