And this from a supposedly educated person when my son was in kindergarten:
We were having an IEP meeting prior to my son entering kindergarten. I was requesting an interpreter for him. They were telling me it wasn't necessary at the kindergarten level. I was questioning why they thought that communication wasn't necessary for a child in kindergarten. The reply from the S&L therapist:
"Well, when he gets to 4th or 5th grade, and the class material gets harder, then he might need an interpreter." How in the heck would an interpreter help at the 4th grade level if he hasn't been able to understand the material from K-3rd grade?
I thought this one was pretty funny, too....a woman that works in the disability office with me was trying to get the attention of one of our blind students across the office. She stood up, and was waving her arms over her head. I started laughing, and said, "Diane, watch this." I just called, "Matt!" He turned towartd me and said "Hi, Jill." I just looked at her and said, "Wave to deaf people, speak to blind people."
Or what country are you from?
They don't need a culture because they are able to mingle with heaing and join in their conversation without any problems. We have that problem if there are group of people have a conversation. That is why we have a culture so that we could have conversation with others without having to work hard at keeping up like we would with hearing people..
Blinds don't have that problem.
In a group of people like that, pen and paper won't do it.
I've even heard people, in real life pronounce the word, "deaf", as "death" as well....has anyone else heard that?
When I was living in NY and didnt have a car that time. I was at the bus stop and waiting for the bus. The man came to me and asked me abt the bus. I answered him back. He said "Oh you have german accent." I looked at him and said "No I have deaf accent." He was speechless and wave bye then walked away. I was giggled inside..
Only heard it from my ex husband's cousin. He always says " she's death" . I have to correct him all the time by saying "no!, it's d-e-a-f! " .
Or you could say to him/her, "Do you have speech problem?" haha

Well I have some too, but one is a story that the most stupid hearies ever told me.
I decide to go to a college to learn the Japanese language, and the person who are manager for the interpreters around the college told me that I shouldn't take Japanese class because I can't learn it while the interpreter have less knowledge of the Japanese language, and I can't learn Japanese language because it use too much symbols(sp?) and she have been suggesting me to learn German or Spanish or French because I can learn it easy because same alphabets and easier for the interpreter.
I told that person "The interpreter is not learning, it was me who are learning, and I will be learning how to READ, not talking!". That person quiet and tried let me go to that class, guess what? Interpreter do much less work because I was focus on the papers where I was learning how to read Japanese, plus the interpreter even doesn't get involved with me and my Japanese teacher discussing about how can I learn reading while the hearies are study the sounds/talking. It was me and my Japanese teacher did whole of the works, the interpreter do less work!
This is one of my experience with most stupid ever hearies told me.
Also I have other:
*Wow some Deafies smoke and drinking?!
*You have CI/HA right? You can talk perfect like hearies, right?!
*I didn't know that Deafies can read?
*Deafies can't live on their own. (yupp seriously........)
Wow. Did you take the class?
I took a Japanese class when I was in high school. I learned about the arts and some of Japanese language. It was very interesting. I had about five hearies and me in the class. It was really fun.
I had the interpreter, and she had no problem because it was a small class. It was just a perfect for me to socialize with them.
I never forgive a supervisor for a deaf program, and he did not believe that deaf students to take foreign classes. I was lucky that he did not know that I had the class because it was an extra credit.

LOL I love the replies in this thread , especially the ones from Jill and Cheri. You two are hilarious.
Like today at work, I was doing the floor while she was on the line doing my job as I am having to take another person's place this week for their vacation. Well anyway she would holler at me, I wouldnt hear her, then at lunch she came to me and asked - are you mad at me, Ive hollered for you all morning but you ignore me."
I replied: "no - im just walking around ignoring the world today!"
I'm curious what was their response to that question?
That's funny!
