Stupid things non-deafies say

When they see me sign to TJ- they would ask which one of you are deaf? is he deaf? Then I would say no he is not but I am deaf. They said but you talk? how can that be? I said that I was born deaf but can hear some without my hearing aid but use the aid to hear the sounds clearly. They would go Ohh, cool! ha!

My gyn think I dont need terp and said i dont need one when i go in the hospital for hystercomy. I go then how can i hear you when i dont wear my hearing aid. He goes, Oh i see. Duh at him? you cant wear hearing aid in the Operation room? guess dr is stoopid... jeez!

Yep, and besides that, everyone in the operating room has masks covering their mouth so you can't lip read.

They could live by themselves but I dont think for the duration they would remain live indenpendently. They would need someone to come and check them to make sure blind people are allright. Blind people still need to have someone to drive them to do errands. The point is that it is dumb for hearing people to say that they prefer to be blind than being deaf. They dont understand that blindness have far more restriction than deaf people.

I am sure you would prefer to be blind and have CI than being deaf? Lmao.

Wow, glad to hear you have positive attitudes about disability. This may be a huge newsflash to you, but blind people can live and work independently. And no, that doesn't mean -semi- independently, it means completely.

I am deafblind- and I don't need people to drive me places. If I can't use my own two feet to get there, I take the bus- to my college, to the grocery store, to the mall. I certainly don't need someone to come and check up on me in fear that I've like, tripped in the shower. :giggle:

Please, refrain from stating completely mistaken assumptions about blindness as though it is fact. We are not miserable, pathetic, or incapable beings. We are not "more" or "worse" disabled than you- we are just -different-.

Well you could say...."Being deaf, there is nothing wrong with voicebox, isn't it?" or something like that. I hate when ppl said "but you can talk"

Then I would say no he is not but I am deaf. They said but you talk? how can that be?

So using pen and paper is daunting task? Hearing people can work with deaf people but it is attitude that preventing both to work together.

You have deaf culture, deaf events, deaf gathering, etc...

Blind? I only know there is blind association but I dont think they have coffee nights, happy hour at bar, etc.. I believe blind people dont have their own culture, or am i wrong?

We have conventions, which are much like other minority conventions, the time where we all get together and do our living as quickly as possible, because it's that one week out of the year that you spend with people who are just like you.

That said, "blind" culture doesn't serve the same function that Deaf culture does. Deaf people share, unlike hearing blind people, a minority language. As has been said, a hearing blind person can walk up to anybody and start a natural conversation in their native language. A deaf person, not so much.

I have actually had blind people come up to me and say "I'd rather be blind than deaf." I'm thankful they're blind only because they can't see the expression on my face.

While I completely agree that it's rude... you have to understand that for hearing blind person, sound is their most important sense, far more than it is for a sighted hearing person. Most hearing blind people cannot imagine the difficulty experienced in deafness as something they can "live with" because they use hearing for most everything... from travel, crossing the street, finding the correct bus, chatting with a friend, reading a novel.

In the same way sighted deaf people cannot imagine not seeing the rainbows, not seeing signs, it feels the same to hearing deaf people.

So, while it's a -rude- action, it's not a particularly surprising action.

Just gotta tell you this:

The first time I was in college (years ago) I had a blind roommate. She loved to play cards, and had her deck brailled in the upper right corner so she could tell what she had in her hand. She taught me to recognize the braille symbols, and then would always sit with her back to the light, so I could see the light shining through the pierced areas of the braille. Needless to say, we won quite a bit! LOL. Shame on us for cheating!

Haha, nice. What fun is the game without cheating, anyways?

My own deck of cards isn't brailled through the card, rather, they have braille tape with the relevant information. While this makes for awkward attempts at shuffling, it does indeed prevent any peeking from the sighted party.

I've had the "she's death" thing happen to me many times!!

Sometimes when I talk to someone through the relay, the hearing caller will say "please tell her.... please tell her...." I'm like - talk to me directly! I'm not named "her."

Ah okay. I have two friends who themselves are deaf-blind and they couldn't live independently. I guess according you blind people can do anything except see. Isn't it good thing that we have message boards so ignorant people like me can be educated? ;)

haha ... same thing happened to me years ago on TTY with text relay service. When every time hearing callers said that I said something like this ... "Excuse who is her are you talking about. or Who is she do you want to know?" It would shut them up oops at times.

There was a time when I was working at a local grocery store. A lady came up to me and asked me where something was. I didn't understand her at first and asked her to repeat. She repeated and I understood her the second time. After I took her to the place of what she was looking for, she turned to me and asked... "What country are you from? Since you didn't understand me the first time, it's obvious that you're not from around here." When I told her that I was deaf, she said... "Oh, ok." and walked away.

People tend not to recongise our "deaf" voice - it may be disgused as different voices, like they might think from another countries - For example, Russia.

So that Russia mean who live in USA and mean we are SPY!!!!:laugh2:

When I was in high school and the teacher is calling the name. Happen, the teacher is walking behind back the end sit. Somewhat, I feel something even interpreter is looking at teacher what teacher is doing.

"ARE YOU (my name) AND SAY YOU CAN HEAR ME?!" (laughing) I look at him and he was like you can hear me. I say.. no.. you breathe is smell...

Zero, that sort of thing happens to my sister and I a lot, people thinking we fake deafness because we're aware of them behind us.

My sense of smell is extremely good, so like you I often detect bad breath and body odor, aftershave, or perfume before I see the person. Sometimes I can even tell who it is, ha ha ha.

Some are so clumsy that I feel them plodding like hippos out of water or brushing against walls like cows scratching their sides.

Some I catch as shadows or a reflection in a water glass, window pane, or the outside edge of my glasses. It doesn't take much movement to know someone's there.

My cat gives a brief bored glace in their direction to clue me -- or sometimes give his tail an annoyed flick to sign: The loser is sneaking up on us again.

I've also felt the air pressure in a room change with the opening and closing of a door.

Pah! The deaf detectives in my stories make those whose only reality is sound look really stooopid. Turnabout is fair play.

Its funny i remember when i was working one day .. i was sweeping floor and my sister yelled.. Order.... i just basically ignored her. sweeping floor.. Again she said my name Gin.. Order.. i continued to ignore her... she walked to me and tapped me on my shoulder and said i called out to you few times and you didnt hear me.. U have order.. i giggled and said i may be deaf but i was ignoring you... she laughed at what i said... LOL!!!!!!

I've even heard people, in real life pronounce the word, "deaf", as "death" as well....has anyone else heard that?

Same as hearies saying baff (bath) muvva (mother) favva (father) filfy (filthy) just plain laziness if you ask me and really peeees me off when I had to put much effort into learn to pronounce word correctly.

I hear ya, RayKat and if it's any consolation, out of the approximately 50 times I've heard this word pronounced this way (and I'm HoH, hahahaha) in my lifetime, those folks didn't have much education from what I could tell.....
