STDs still on the rise, report says

I never said I would "simply tell them not to do it."

And yes I feel totally capable giving my children scientifically accurate information on all diseases, not just STD's. I am a physician.

That's great...you are able to give your child accurate information. What of the parents that aren't?

As a physician, do you feel any responsibility for making sure the rest of the population is educated regarding the health risks of unprotected sex?

that's fine. not all parents are physician. Not all parents know about this issue accurately. I wouldn't be surprised if more than half of them got the information half-wrong.

And George Bush didn't put $1.5 billion into abstinence only programs. The U.S. Government has put $1.5 billion into those programs since 1996. Who was President between 1996-2000? Slick Willy. Don't forget that the President doesn't just get to do whatever he wants. It must go through Congress as well.

And schools today do teach regular sex ed, not just abstinence only.

So how will the physician be able to check on teens that are sexually active? A lot of sexually active teens will not come forward to be tested. Even if the parents bring the teen in. All that teen has to do is refuse the examination, and the physician can not touch that child.

I think most sex ed are quite outdated and limited but i don't know for sure. I graduated from HS in 2000 so I wonder if it has changed a lot.

This is not about George Bush, but it is about the tremendous amount of support that he has thrown behind abstinence only programs and the tragic consequences of such programs. They are utter failures. How about putting that 1.5 million into programs assisting the teen mothers or teen aged AIDS victims?

Nice try at diverting the topic. I will ask again, as a physician, do you feel any responsibility for insuring that the rest of the population receives accurate information regarding the health consequences of unprotected sex? Or is preventive medicine not your forte? Just prefer to treat after the fact?

Given the statistics, not much. And very, very few public schools include sex ed, as anything more than a perfunctory health class, in their curriculum.

So if you're at work and your boss tells you to complete a task, would you tell him/her I'm not sure, or I don't know? I doubt that would be a good enough excuse for your boss, so why is it a good enough excuse when it comes to your child's physical and emotional health?

Fallicious comparison, doctor. Please answer the questions.

I'm not changing the subject! You should just get your facts straight before you post them. You're the one that said Bush put the money into this!

And 25 states don't accept the money for abstinence only programs, so I doubt there are very, very few schools that teach regular sex. ed..... Again, you're trying to blame the rise in STD's on George Bush and the Government.

As a physician I do not feel responsible for the sexual health of every american. I'm a neuromusculoskeletal specialist. If I had a patient I was concerned about, or if they had questions I would refer them to an appropriate source. And if they were a child, yes their parents would be included, unless abuse were suspected.

If you would like to spend your time defending George Bush there are many other threads that are devoted to topics such as that.

So, as a physician, you are not concerned with the number of health risks and increased health care costs that come with concerns like teen aged pregnancy and STD transmission?

I did not ask you if you felt responsible for every person's sexual health. I asked you, in effect, if you felt responsible for insuring that the American public had accurate information regarding health care concerns. Sexual health is one part of that.

Ah, so you would refer your patient to another source because you did not have that information in your knowledge base. That is exactly what parents, who do not feel capable of educating their children on this specific topic are doing. Why is that appropriate action for you, but not for them? And, if you do not feel able to convey this information to your patients, then how is it that you can do so with your children? Or will you refer them, as well?

BTW, so you are a chiropractor? A chiropractor is not a physician, now are they?

You didn't ask if I felt responsible for people's sexual health?
"I will ask again, as a physician, do you feel any responsibility for insuring that the rest of the population receives accurate information regarding the health consequences of unprotected sex?"

I do have the knowledge base, but it would be completely unprofessional for me to discuss sexual topics with my patients. Would you want your dentist to discuss sexual health with your kids?

And I'm not defending Bush. I'm just tired of everyone using him as a scapegoat for everything. And you are just annoyed that you got your facts wrong and I called you on it.

did you forget about legal age? Teen has no legal rights until they are of 18 years old. That means parents can make them get examination.

You quoted me correctly. Please indicate anywhere in that quote where I asked you about feeling responsible for everyone's sexual health. I was referring to your responsibility, as a medical practitioner, for insuring that accurate information, leading to practices in individuals that reduce health risks and negative consequences, was of concern to you. It is of concern to the Hippocratic Oath, you know.

My facts are not wrong. The 1.5 billion was sunk into abstinence only programs under the Bush administration, and he was a strong proponent of abstinence only education.

And, no, I would prefer that someone trained to educate my children in these matters do so. That seems to be something that you are opposed to. In which case, someone needs to offer the information to these kids. I would prefer that a chiropractor not do it, either.

I have to apologize for being a little crass, but I haven't changed my views.

I don't usually post on forums, and I have to get back to my life now.

Don't take this the wrong way (I'm not trying to be a jerk), but don't spend too much time on these forums. Invest in people.

If you are really passionate about sexual health go out and volunteer with someone who has been affected by STD's. Or volunteer to educate people on sexual health.

Our comments on this forum won't change anything. I'm sure my thoughts have not changed your view, and yours' haven't changed mine.

Have a great day.

God Bless.

As a matter of fact, I do that on a daily basis. My investment is completely people oriented.

And, if yours was, as well, you would be listening to what the people have to say.:cool2:

"I would prefer that a chiropractor not do it, either."

What did you mean by that?
