Srsly! Teenager sent 14528 texts in a month!

It's not you using it.

It's how it is.

You get lost, it has GPS.

You can't understand what people say, you have translator.

You dunno where to go, you have mapquest on the phone.

Do I need to list more? lol

PS. you can use it for others to look at it to understand you.

Easy.

what if no one is around in order to help me use the features on my phone? then what?

difficult.

in my opinion, cell phones do way too much. all i want is a phone -- not a camera, not gps and not texting. a phone.

I agree! I don't need a camera and day planner and photo scanner and GPS and email checker. Just a phone for calling will do for me too. Even now if I walk into the phone store I asked for the simplest model and it can still do 56 different things.

we survived without cell phones 25 years ago, so we can survive today without them as well.

We also survived without electricity at one time too. But is it nice? Sure it is. Same with cell phones. Do we need them? No. But they sure are nice in a lot of situations. So why not enjoy them?

enjoying a $300 phone bill? talking to others loudly while driving or standing in line at the grocery store? texting people who are in the same room with you? yep, that's my idea of enjoyment. NOT.

how can a cell phone save my life if i can't see to use 95% of its' features?

If you can make a phone call, then it can save your life..:) Just think of all those characters who died in the movies; they could have survived if they had a mobile phone. :)

Yeah, once upon a time we did survive without using the phones, but a lot has changed now. The world is smaller and faster for starters...

just because cell phones are quote unquote "nice" to have doesn't mean they are necessary to have.

when i have children, they will not own a cell phone until they are 16 years old (if they are still around by then) and can pay for it out of their own pocket from a part-time job.

how is a cell phone going to save my life? if someone wants to kill me, a cell phone isn't going to stop them.

...and i have a huge problem with the world being smaller and faster. why can't we all just slow down a little? everyone is always in such a rush. it sure would be nice if we could go back 25 years before any of us ever heard of a cell phone.

I agree with you but everything has its downsides. What about when the power goes out, or the battery dies, or the fuse blows. But electricity is still very useful in many situations.

I got a cell phone at 14 and I must say I survived. My parents had to force me to get it too, cause I can't stand talking on the phone. The way phones affect sound is really grating on my ears, not to mention I have a serious anxiety about talking to people on the phone. I agree with you personally, Hear Again, but I don't think it would be fair to us to place our preferences on other people.

Ok, here is one example that happened to a poor girl... The girl was abducted, and her abductor/s threw her into a car boot, but they didn't know she had a mobile/cell phone. So, she managed to call the police who were able to track her location.

who says all 300 kids need access to the phone at once? when i was in elementary school, the staff didn't have any problem with calling a child's parents if there was an emergency.

as for 9/11, how often will an event like that take place? that's an exception -- not the rule.

Interesting you say that because the same thing happened the year after and the year after in my school. During the sniper attacks, many students relied on their cell phones. And the year after a classmate of mine had an epileptic attack. My teacher whipped out her cell phone and called 911, which probably saved her life. Another example is snowdays -- we would have the whole school waiting in line to use the phone to call their parents to inform them that we were being dismissed early. Or once when it was hailing outside, the school wanted to keep us late until it stopped hailing. Again tons of students were waiting in line to use the phone. Students that had the cell phones just had to dial their parents right there and then. National emergencies aren't that common but emergencies do happen in schools a lot, or just situations that require many students to be on the phone.

i'm not placing my preferences on other people. i'm talking about my children when i have them. i could care less what other people or parents do even though i don't think cell phones are a necessity.

Hear Again, I have actually been saved from gang rape by using my cell phone. So it's actually possible for a phone to save your life.

Cell Phones may be handy for a reason but when one abuses it; It loses the purpose of using the cell phone.

Sure, Cell Phones may be fun to use but really, for one to use the cell phone - They also need to learn how to maintain self-reliance and to use it when it is necessary.

when i was a student back in the 70s and 80s and we had snow days, my parents knew about it because of reports on the tv and radio. voila! no cell phone.

you had the entire school waiting in line to use the phone? that sounds like an exaggeration. i'm sure some of those students took the bus home and were picked up by their parents once they knew classes let out early. when i was in middle school, i walked over 5 miles to get there. if we had a snow day, my father came to pick me up to drive me home. again, no cell phone was necessary.

personally, i think all cell phones should be banned in schools.

<good posting> It's about finding a balance. Anything can be abused. This example is of a teenager abusing her cell phone use. The problem isn't the cell phone, it's the addiction. She's addicted to it. You can become addicted to anything.

the 13 year old girl in the OP wouldn't have had any problem in the first place if she didn't own a cell phone.

Alcoholics wouldn't have had any problem if they were never exposed to alcohol. Sex addicts would never have a problem if they were never exposed to sex. Addiction is a behavior pattern. What you become addicted to is pretty insignificant, and I've seen people who had one thing taken away because of addiction just find something new to become addicted to. Who knows, maybe she would have been addicted to video games instead. Or the Internet.
