What the hell is a 14 yrs old doing with a cell in the first place? I don't think kids need a cell phone until they're old enough to drive!
I text a LOT but not that much, once i blew £20 in like 4 days
Then you're fine with your 14 years old out breaking havocs with no way to contact if hurted or lost.
Think about it, when you're 14, you become more rebellious and outgoing/adventure.
I remember when I left my phone at home for a day, my parents said it felt like I disappeared for a day.

I'm perfectly fine knowing my 14 yrs old is in school where he/she should be. I'm perfectly fine with the idea that my 14 yrs old is at a friend's house where he/she can use a LAND LINE to call me if needed. I'm perfectly fine with the idea that my 14 yrs old has a curfew that is abided by. There will be no going out after a certain hr.
That's how I was raised and that's how I would raise a son or daughter. I didn't get a phone until I was 16 yrs old. I don't think it's necesary for my kid to have a cell phone. Getting a cell phone is a priviledge that is earned when they are old enough and mature enough to pay for it themselves with a part time job.

The only way my kids or anyone is can contact me is if they text me on my Blackberry.
My kids need to use a cell phone.
Why would kid be in middle of nowhere? It shows parents lack of responsible for the welfare of this child! This child should NOT be in middle of nowhere, and giving cell phone to them is like telling them, ok you have cell phone, go anywhere as you (kids) pleases... You call this parental responsiblity? I am laughing my ass off!
So, you were never rebellious?
How bout this, how strict were your parents? Is it possible that you're much more flexible than your parents? If so, isn't it possible that your kid would belay your command to come home and go out to play some more in areas you don't know? It's possible, and best to have cell phone for your kid since it has GPS tracking device on the phones.
...or they could call relay.
...and what if your child disables the gps capability?

Actually, I wasn't a rebellious child or teenager, and no, my parents weren't overly strict. We had boundaries which every kid needs. As for the safety issue, there are lots of ways to deal with it without the need of a cell phone. I just don't believe in giving a young teenager a cell phone. They're not mature enough to handle it most of the time. As evidenced by this kid that the OP posted about.
Impossible, they'd have to break the phone apart. The chip is with in the battery section, so it'd break if you took it out.
