Being surrounded by warships from three different countries, they know their time is up. The international community has, definitely, taken notice. Perhaps some of the pirates know that while the others want to "fight to the end."

yup... yup..... it's still a lose-lose situation for them. Oh well....

This is horrible! If Iran is smuggling the ships with WMD, we have serious issue on UN's hand. Perhaps could give Americans reason to go war. I know its crazy to go into another war when we need to simmer down IRAQ first.

America is in NO position to go to another war since their military is too stretched. I prefer diplomatic approaches first; however, Iran seems not to cooperate with the IAEA on nuclear inspection lately.

You are right - we are no shape for another war. I wish UN will become the world police. We need UN to be a world police and act up on the situation.

The problem with UN, they have many countries that are in treaty with rogue countries such as Russia with Iran. So of course Russia will vote against any actions up on Iran. I wish that UN will develop stronger treaty within UN countries that will ban treaties with rogue countries. Or at least treaty within UN are top priority over the rogue's treaty. Then we can have stronger UN and its military. Then Americans can really step down on their expenses of Military into any rogue countries. At least once you sign treaty with UN, you automatically sign treaty with all countries that participate with UN. That will reduce the problem.

Also it will be easier if UN's alliances to patrol the international waters. That will help control some of pirates in the sea and smugglers.

We don't need Somalia (Somaliland for you Wokumuka) with WMDs LOL Not only can they be transferred to terrorists, we'd have a proliferation problem.

It should be said that none of the Arab nations have taken a great interest in this situation. Peculiar, isn't it?

Ground forces are perhaps "too stretched." There are other ways to make military strikes.

The French have ground forces in nearby Dijibouti and, last I checked, the French were part of the UN.

Their Foreign Legion troops have had abses there for a long time for the purpose of training and security.

But not part of America. This post I replied to was about American forces.

I stand corrected. I was thinking along the lines of U.N forces which seemed to be the direction the debate was going.

Ahh, the UN is a whole 'nother ball of wax, worthy of its own thread. :P

It's easy to make mistakes when the posting gets going fast and furious. :giggle:

Somaliland is the yellow orange area shown here. It's one of the de facto independent areas within the area known internationally as Somalia. I wonder what areas the pirates came from.

The UN is as trigger-shy and indecisive as they will never resolve anything unless the US (sometimes NATO) steps in to force a resolution to a crisis through military means. We are not dangerously stretched thin as we have several more divisions on hand. We have some pretty good ways of delivering some damaging interdiction if it requires the US to do so.
