should parents lose custody of fat kids?

The child's doctor should work with the family to help an overweight child lose weight. The doctor should tell the parents the health risks their child will have if they get too fat. What kind of education are you talking about, a high school diploma or master degree? It good thing this idea was not a law when the country was starting out a lot of parents would not be allowed to have babies.

I did not feed my baby baby food from a jar, I made all her baby food in a blender so she did not get all that added sugar and salt as a baby. And I did not buy any junk food for her and my child never had a weight problem. I think too many parents use food as an award or as a punishment and that is not a good idea. Some doctors do this, they give a child a lollipop as an award !

Or they give into their kids' demands because it's easier.

DO NOT be trying to put words in my mouth. You can not find one post of mine that gives the idea that I want the government or anyone in the bedroom. I have not nor will I ever support a law to control reproduction.

If you care to go back and re-read my post, I did say a professional will never allow a child under his/her care to become obsess. Your post above proves my point where you explain the parents going to the doctor AFTER the child is already fat. By giving people education classes BEFORE they even consider having a child, any problem (and I do wish all babies were born without a disorder) that does come about the parent ALREADY has information to help with the serious issue. When we
look at the issue of children being taken away (which I'm totally against) all the causes are after-the-fact.....i.e. after the child is born, after the child is fast, etc.
So, just why a person is opposed to education before-the-fact is beyond me!

Just open up the cute bow-tied little instruction books that come with each baby and for GOD'S SAKE READ THEM! :pissed:

Actually, one would think so but it's really not that hard. What's hard to making kids eat well when there are unhealthy choices in the house that they would keep sneaking out of the pantry and spoil their appetite. The girl I babysat tried all the time to sneak cookies or her favourite treat, rice krispie treats out of the pantry - I made her mother stop buying them and only allow just one bag of sweets in the house like oreos or whatever that I could easily keep out of reach and let her have just one or two after supper. Once junk food is no longer accessible and their only choices are healthy food, then they adapt pretty fast. Hunger has a way of making healthy food taste really good.

Absolutely it works for both young and old. When there are no goodies in the house thats it. I have a cousin that is spoiling her kids food wise. One son almost choked on some food. She is spoiling them because of a lack of other things in their lives. It sucks because you can't really tell her anything. When you start them young on sweets then they will have a taste for it. It's best not to start a bad habit. Im sure some people don't know there is sugar on McDonalds fries, chicken sandwiches, burgers, probably even the salad! :giggle:

Parents taking the parental class is not mandatory. The best part of yourself is the common sense and figuring out what's best for your kids. I learned a lot about parenting from my parents and thru some ex girlfriends, current girlfriend and friends. :)

No...

In the post you said: "Just think about it - once you become extremely morbidly obese, you will NEVER have the great body you once had. Never. You'll have a lot of baggage around (even with plastic surgeries) and your fat cells retain memory. You'll have constant addiction to food."

I disagree. My husband is a personal trainer, and there are tons of shows on TV. You can reverse obesity if you change your lifestyle--eat right and exercise. Its a hard thing to do, but it CAN be done, just depends on the person!

Parents--just dont give your kids the idea that obesity is a handicap, its not. And people, you can loose the weight, you just have to take the right steps and change your life style...not just go on a diet, that doesnt work!

I was a personal trainer too. He's right though. You can get lean and fit again but your skin, stretched by obesity will not shrink. If it did, there wouldn't be so many moms going for cosmetic surgery to get tummy tucks.

You should look up to the truth and not to a rainbow. The truth is black and white.

Fortunately, the truth is not black and white. Only those who live a very, very limited existence believe that.

I AM implying that people whom are helpless should not do something as stupid as have a child. There is no implication that these "fat" kids have a biological disorder but a possibility. Parents who do have a child with any disorder should seek professional help. And NO professional will allow a child to get obsess under his/her care.

All I can say is, thank Gawd you had your tubes tired.

Then you are even more offensive than I originally thought.

And you can refrain from ever addressing anything to do with my right to reproduction. It is none of your concern. Nor is anyone else's right to reproduction.

Don't really know BUT 100% do know what they DO NOT do....have a child!

That is not your decision to make. I personally believe that someone as judgemental and intolerant as you should never even come close to having an influence on a child. But that is not my decision to make, either. I just clean up the mess after people like you have messed them up.

Yes parenting is hard in most sections. Its difficult for me sometimes.

It is difficult for all of us. But even so, the vast majority do a pretty good job of it despite that.

That is where we all learn our parenting skills, both good and bad. The way we were parented is generally the way we parent. In some cases, however, we see the negatives and change and do the complete opposite.

And then, there are some cases, like a certain poster in this thread, that appears to have been raised by wolves.

Lets see! We force people to take driver's ed before getting a license.
Not true everywhere.

...So just what is your problem of making them take parenting classes (and a hard test...at least harder than driver's ed.) before graduation?
The rest of your examples are just as irrelevant, so I'm not even going to address them.

I support classes in nutrition and other life skills but not as mandatory prerequisites to parenthood. What next? A procreation license for couples?

Most families make it thru life without formal parenting classes just fine. For those who need help in specific areas, then such classes might be in order.

You know this, I'm sure, but for those who don't....

You know who teaches a woman to be a Mother to their firstborn? Often, it's the woman's MOTHER.

It most cases, this is the most effective way to helping a woman learn how to parent their child. It some cases it isn't, but that is RARE.

If it was me (and admittedly, I decided against having children for health reasons), I'd go to MY MOTHER for expertise in raising a child. Why? Because, she raised ME AND MY SISTER!
