Schools to Stop teaching Cursive!

As a teacher...I proudly say BYE BYE cursive writing!!! Many students struggle with cursive and I find it completely useless and a waste of time. A lot of students with reading disabilities already struggle with reading print- can you imagine how much more difficult reading in cursive can be?

My niece had aspergers and compulsive disorder and when she did cursive she went over each letter about 3 times ! This took time and when she had get a
test she needed extra time to write her answers. Otherwise she would had gotten a failing grade on every test!

Yeah, my dad had the habit, too. He was an engineer. Had beautiful printing, BTW.

Same for my Dad too. I only seen his writing in non-caps twice in my life. He always write in block captions.

Not quite sure what cursive is? Is that meant be handwriting?

I always right in printed/block form. (whichever one callled non-handwriting form)

I also noticed today that when my blood sugar is low I have difficulty writing. I had such an incident today when I was writing a check to the mechanic for my truck. My lord, my cursive was AWFUL! Reminded me of what it looked like back in grade 3. It was legible, but nowhere near it's best. I felt rather stupid for not being able to confidently write in cursive.

It would be interesting to see what everyone's handwriting looks like on here. Maybe we should agree to write a simple sentence in cursive and in print and upload them to here.

I use the gel pens for scrapbooking and nice decorative paper that is designed for the computer. If I feel I need the lines like on some stationery, then I run it through the printer and print out "ghost lines" . Very pale grey underlining. I have even been know to use the feature I have in one of my home school program for handwriting paper and use the college ruled in a faint grey.

That is not the same as someone taking the time to sit down and write a love letter from their heart. This will be a lost art. I have letters from friends that are no longer alive and I love to read them when I am missing them. And I love the fact that it is in their own writing as it tell show much about their personalty and the mood they where while writing the letter. You get to know a person mood from the way the words are written. It like art work to me.

Are you sure she doesn't need eyeglasses? I used to do that before I got eyeglasses.

People who are very computer literate and write well also have a style of communication when typing. It's the 'inward copy editor' that we all have.

I kind of like it.

I'm going to miss cursive. It's sad that people can't even read cursive writing anymore.

I remember when I was a kid I felt that I had "grown up" when I learned cursive writing--printing was for little kids.

Cursive writing is so much faster than printing. If I had to print everything it would take too long.

If people don't learn cursive writing, how will they sign their names to official documents?

I'd like to add... if people don't learn cursive writing, how will they read the genealogy records?

can you even read handwriting from Colonial Age with ease? or Medieval Age? I mean damn! Declaration of Independence was hard enough to read

same thing. Don't take it too literally. Just because they announced that they won't teach it anymore doesn't mean the future generation won't know how to read & write cursive writing.

True. It's hard enough now to do that. I guess that will become a specialized skill.

Good, I had a hard time to read some people's cursive handwrite for communication thru paper and pen. Like Is it an E? an I? a L? Ahh!

I still write in cursive on my CC, check, tax, etc for my name only.

I am sure your Cursive writing is quick but problem, most fill out forms are write in print only. Nothing you can do it. That's why I prefer to sign up everything thru internet over write on the paper for fast. My WPM is around 80. I don't think most people's cursive writing are faster than type at 60-120 WPM.

I don't fill out forms very often, so it's no big deal. :)

I can type/keyboard very fast, too, but I also like to write notes. It depends on where I'm at and what I'm doing. If I'm taking notes in church or at a workshop or during a meeting, I prefer to write my notes. It's much quicker and I can easily add on or edit them. Many times I just add my handwritten notes to the printed handouts, so I can insert them directly where I want them.

I used to have great handwriting back when I was still in school but now I have to print in block letters to make sure it's legible - all those years of working on the computer and answering emails...sigh! My stepmom has really beautiful handwriting and it's always a pleasure to read anything she writes, even if it was about how to clean the toilet, her handwriting is THAT nice! :D

I guess you misunderstood what I said. I do hand write letters. Someone posted that ink pens and stationery was going out, so I mentioned that I use the paper meant for a printer and then hand write on that. My hubby gets a handwritten smushy letter from me every year for our anniversary and a short little letter at least once a week in his lunchbox. I do not very often type up a letter in the computer and I only email the family members who don't write back.

 Mkay...if you say so.

My mother used to have very beautiful cursive handwriting, but as she got older and with all the illnesses she's had as well as the dementia, her handwriting is getting very messy.

My handwriting sucks. However, I am trained in lettering and typography. Got paid to do heraldic design a few times. My middle finger is slightly crooked. lol. My mom can do German handwriting. Amazing.
