Rodney King dead at 47

Well, for one thing it is true! Many blacks do not know how to swim and many are afraid to go in the water. I know because I was in the Navy with many!

I don't doubt this is true, but it has nothing to do with being black. It has to do with the fact that poor black kids who live in inner cities or very rural places join the service in higher percentage. So, why would it surprise you that they don't have a swimming pool or access to an ocean? How many do you know own oceanfront property?

It is the same as saying black people don't play hockey because they can't skate. In fact, it cost more for a kid to play hockey than it does to play basketball, there is less equipment to buy.

That has nothing to do with swimming in the Navy. The Navy teaches all the sailors how to swim in boot camp, and they all practice together. They also teach drownproofing skills which aren't part of the average kids' swimming experience, white or black. How many white suburbanite kids do you know learn how to stay afloat by making an air bubble out of their dungarees in order to stay afloat?

If people can't swim, it's not just about being poor. There are plenty of poor white kids, too.

Do rich famous rappers have swimming pools? I believe so but I bet they won't go there unless it's five feet deep.

60 percent of black children can't swim - Health - Children's health - msnbc.com

Read back through the thread, it's not about swimming in the Navy.
I wasn't replying to the whole thread but to post #101.

airportcop: "Well, for one thing it is true! Many blacks do not know how to swim and many are afraid to go in the water. I know because I was in the Navy with many!"

You would be surprise to find there are some good swimmers and some good hockey players. We have one or two in the National Hockey Leagues. So it all depends on what they preferred whether in sports or in the Navy. Reba is correct that if any one does not know how to swim can learn to swim in the Navy.

That is why you, airportcop and that include VacationGuy234, are racists when you think like that. White people can swim while some white people can not swim. So what is the difference to you? Stop whining like you know all about black people because you don't want to know about them. Simple as that. Stop putting them down like as they are objects, not human or people. We are all human and we should be equal no matter what color, creed and religion . Show respect. Geeze

Well, the skate rinks in here are very mixed or mostly blacks so they skate so fine to me, however there are some children fell down on floor so I helped them.

Speaking about swimming, I posted the article that based on studies, however if you go to public pools in LA, Birmingham and Atlanta so most of them are blacks and latino so they swim fine.

The man wanted to put this part of his life behind him and for people to stop killing each other over something that unfortunately involved him. I think he was a good person that had an awful disease that ultimately took his life. My sympathies to his children and loved ones. Why keep dragging up the past? He didn't want to be remembered for this - have compassion for someone that couldn't overcome his problems and wish his family peace. Why does everyone keep talking about the same sorry story?

Put on some glasses and re-read my post. He stated a fact and I stated a fact. There is nothing racist about it. He knew people in the Navy who didn't swim before they joined and it is a fact that poorer people join the service for jobs. I disagreed with his opinion, but it is just that, his opinion.

If you don't believe economics plays a role in how people are brought up, white and black, please state some facts where poor people are buying houses on the waterfront and sending their kids to school on hockey scholarships. If you are going to argue that a certain group has equal pay and equal jobs, I'd love to hear about it.

Yes, there are people who play hockey at the professional level, but check the numbers. Nobody here is saying a certain ethnic group can't swim or play hockey just that, in their opinion, the majority doesn't.

On topic, I believe, it was stated by his wife/fiance that Rodney King knew how to swim as he had a swimming pool. She, is the one who didn't know how to swim, as far as I know.

EDIT: For the record: I don't think Rodney King deserved what happened to him. And that opinion is shared by the majority of people of all races, IMO. The police have power and they need to use it with great care. Rightly or wrongly, just like the Travon Martin case, it's a sad end to a sad story.

Here is my link:

And, I don't mean to offend anyone, but I really think it is an economical rather than ethnic issue.

don't you think police officers made it worse by violating his civil rights and beating him down?

oh my.... and Rodney King was more Christian than you because he forgave them.

Coming from a Buddhist, I would have to say you are not qualified to tell anyone how to be a Christian. I am sure that multi million dollar settlement allowed him to be so "forgiving" (wink, wink "Yeah, sure, I'll forgive them")

based on your lashing out, that means I must be right on the dot.

there are public pools. and it would not be a good idea to swim at ocean especially if you're not an advanced-level swimmer.... you know - rip current.

Wow, there are a lot of rip current in New Jersey? :eek3:

In the outdoor (free) public swimming pools here, the depths are 3 feet and 4 feet. You can't really learn to swim in those unless you're a small child and I never saw anyone learning to swim in these urban public pools. It's all about splashing, frolicking and staying cool in the heat.

And as an aside, my Black girlfriends won't go near a pool because the water messes with their hair. I've heard them say 100 times "Black people and water don't mix". :laugh2: But these are Black teenage girls, not Black young kids just wanting to have a good time in the water (not old enough to care about getting their hair wet.)

Interesting, what about taking a shower? Do they avoid getting their hair wet during a shower as well?
