Gemtun, so what if you are an audist for a few reasons....

There is another audist as an oralist against ASL.
There is another audist made a decision to support C.I.
There is another audist made a decision for not supporting C.I.
There is another audist who sells hearing aids.
There is another audist who is a deaf hippie against hearing impaired politician.
There is another audist who is deaf blue collar worker against hard of hearing white collar boss.
There is another audist who researches for univeristy project that he/she perfers to work for mainstreaming school instead of state school for deaf.
There is another audist who has lots of hearing friends and refuses to admit that he/she is CODA.
There is another audist as an employor who refuses to hire deaf appliants but do not mind hard of hearing appliants who can easily answers the phone.
There is another audist who wants to marry intelligent wealth naive individual with hearing loss.
There is another audist who is gonna to kick vocalists' butts.
There is another audist who loves to play drums with a deafie giving salad tricks...

Yeah, I am audist for several reasons but so what...

:gpost: So what, true....

But, I wonder if a deaf person who is NOT from
an oral background against oralism is also an Audist ?

Yes, I believe that is an example of a deaf audist. Based on my understanding of the description.

Trust me Mookie. I am quite sure that Endmion knows the history of Audism.

I'll second that. Endy is a smart cracker... I mean cookie ( love ya, Endy!).

Can you explain more clarify?? Why do you think of that ??
Sure. My understanding of a deaf audist is someone that is deaf and discriminates, stereotypes or has prejudice towards people based on there ability to hear or in the case of another deaf person, there desire to assimilate with the hearing world by means of HA or CI or being oralist. That understanding is further re-enforced by the description at the following link which states that deaf can be audist too. It's also re-enforced by the original definition by Tom Humphries the man that coined the term. See the liinks below for reference.
Here is the original definition by Tom
http://72.14.203.104/u/Gallaudet?q=....PDF+audism&hl=en&gl=us&ct=clnk&cd=2&ie=UTF-8
Here is a revised definition based on how the term is actually used.
http://library.gallaudet.edu/dr/faq-audism.html
As you can see, both definitions state that deaf can be audists. That and what I have seen here both indicate to me that some deaf people can be and are in fact audist per the definitions. Please correct me if I have mis-interpreted these definitions.

Am I the only one who noticed here on AD lately that the word "audism or audist" has been OVERUSED and OVERABUSED here????!!!

I feel that 90 percent of these who overuse that term simply dont know what it means but likes to throw it around casually. Now they throw that term around in EVERY situation that SEEMS to be AGAINST ASL.

I am damn sick of seeing that. I am tired of that label. I dont see anyone abusing the term ASL militant or whatnot. Why is it okay for others to make it seem like an evil word???!!!

Thanks for letting me rant and rave - I know that many would consider me audist BASED on my background but they would never give me a chance to explain myself, etc. I m just tired of that silly label. It seems like they are not creative enough to come up with another better or accurate label or whatnot. *steaming between my ears* Come on, guys, you can do better than throw audism or audist at anything or anyone that seem to be "against" your beliefs.

:squint:

You ain't alone in your place on the classification chalkboard that some members of this forum seems to have adopted, Gemtun. I'm sure I'm just as much an audist if not more of an audist as you are, based solely upon my own decisions.

Unfortunately, though, where there's sour-minded venom-spewing, you'll find that it's where the majority of the word-sighting is.

If I might recommend something that works for me - take pride in who you are and simply laugh at those who THINK they have the authority to tell you what rules you're breaking in the process.

Perhaps Americans can learn from the UK, we rejected the term audism at day one, we were well aware it just another way of dividing everyone, and causing dissent, some deaf are obsessed with paranoia and think everyone is against them, now, even other deaf ! when will you learn ? labels are for jars. There is also the D/d thing we are working on too, we don't want these terms bandied about, they have NOT advanced the deaf cause or, ENABLED deaf people or its culture, what they HAVE done is created a whole new set of areas where we can fight each other, if we run out of hearing to have a go at.....

Interesting. I wonder what choices you have made that make you feel you are an audist. As I understand the term, if you have made choice to shun the deaf community because you have HA or CI that enables you to assimilate better with the hearing world, then yes, you would be an audist. If your decision to have a CI causes others in the deaf community to shun you, then they are the audists. I am not sure if these apply to you and perhaps you can shed some light on the decisions you have made that cause you to believe you are an audist. Thanks.....

Dang! Now, I'm labeled "Audist" simply for assimiling into the hearing society and not joining the deaf culture. FYI - I just always was oriented to hearing society and never looked back (partly also the focus of my family as well). I took the meaning more of an attitude of negativity and we know "best" toward the deaf and deaf culture. I was never adverse to them. It was simply the fact I never thought about it one way or another and was indifferent in what deaf culture meant to me.

Ummm....hate this word as it keeps shifting in its meaning in my book... *sigh*

Yeah, it does seem to be a moving target. It's unique in that it's the only word that I can think of where it's definition is like a chameleon and is modified based on its subjective interpretation. I find it fascinating. I was happy to find the link at Gally that seemed to have an updated definition based on how it's actually used.

Allow me to clarify this for you - I'm sorry if I was in any way unclear. :)

It's been pre-determined by certain member(s) that an "audist" is one who simply does not agree with some of the (going out on a limb here) militant ideas that are being circulated nowadays...ideas that they themselves believe in and to hell and back with anyone who doesn't choose to follow their lead or tell them that they're right.

My choice was to get implanted with the CI - granted, at the time, it was an ambiguous decision, but it's worked out rather well for me. I am still deaf and consider myself deaf, but I function extremely well in the hearing community. However, I by no means shun the deaf community. About half of my friends have a hearing impairment. When I am with them, I make every possible effort to sign so that there's no miscommunication. I have all the respect in the world for them and it matters none to me whether they choose to get themselves implanted, or choose to wear hearing aids, or choose to sign rather than speak.

So...by your definition - no, I am not an audist nor do I condone shunning on either side based on personal choice. It's just a distasteful and rotten thing to do to anyone - cause truthfully, we're all the same.

Perhaps I should have mentioned that my referring to myself as an audist was done so with the intent to be sarcastic...since I personally do not believe Gemtun (who created this thread) to be one, either. :) I truly share in her sentiments when I echo how disgusted I am at seeing that word thrown around so easily here in this forum and with insufficient proof to back it up.

Of course. ;)

I do suspect though, that it's time for a new avatar. Now that I've re-acquired Photoshop onto my computer, I think I'll go play a little bit.

I KNEW there had to be some irony about that avatar, considering the kinds of attitudes Draco's family had...I was just afraid to ask. ;)

You certainly can count on me to come up with things that may or may not prove thought-provoking. ;) Ask away, Rose!

Some of these threads have been pretty hot...I didn't want to hit a land mine. But glad to know it would've been OK! ;)

Malfy was kind enough to put together my avatar for me as well.
