Random Vents.....

I'm talking about agoraphobics who have been "manufactured", so to speak. I believe there are some true phobics, but I also think some have been created by their environment and allowed to wallow in their own juices.

Like people who were overly coddled by their parents and have no real ambition to leave the house to work? Or the one who gets fired from their job and instead of looking for work they wallow in it and eventually everyone else enables the behavior by 'helping' them and it drags out over a period of years?

^^^Yes, Dixie. Like the extreme obese who cannot leave the house who have their family members bring them eight large pizzas.

^^^I "paged" Jillio in a PM, telling her her presence was needed, LOL.

Usually the mental instability is triggered by some sort of traumatic event that kicks every thing off.

Like - the obese guy that had a bad back injury at work and was out for a year post-op so his back could heal. He stays indoors, eats, and watches TV and balloons up. He maxes out on his FMLA and ends up losing his job, then he ends up on short-term disability. He tries to find work but cant but his family is STILL catering to him, until he gets so obese he CAN'T get up and walk or stand for very long then he ends up on SSDI. Then the whole thing just balloons to epic portions until you have bubba who weighs 800 lbs. lays in bed all day watching TV and eats 3 dozen eggs for breakfast every morning and he's drawing $980/mo while his wife is working two jobs to try and cover most of their living expenses. Shame.

It's a mental disease full of 'I can't' and the family that surrounds them instead of noticing the signs and symptoms (at least not until it's too late or in very far stages) enables Bubba and makes up excuses as to why they don't encourage him to go out and try to find work and do physical activity to help build him back up for work rather than spending the time getting soft on the couch.

I have a friend who sadly turned agoraphobic recently. She was raped and then totally humiliated and ridiculed at her place of employment "for allowing it to happen". This went on for a good 6 months. She was going to a therapist, but then she lost her job and could not continue with her therapist due to no insurance and no money. She retreated and has now not been out of her house for 6 years. Her brother went by with a new computer set-up and with my help, I got a therapist from my old job who was willing to help, to do sessions online over Skype with her. Luckily, she is living in a different place than where she was raped. She moved to a new apartment in a very safe building with security guards, security cameras and all that stuff. She gets her groceries and medicine delivered. Her medical doctor makes a house call to see her. Any time someone comes to visit, she has someone with her to help her feel safe. Her Aunt and Uncle are planning on moving in with her and he is a retired police officer. Currently, she still cannot go near the front door or any of the windows.

This is a sad tale. It's these types of instances that I feel genuinely sorry for. A true trauma that has taken a large piece of her life. As I said, I know some cases are not contrived - your friend sounds like one of them. I hope she gets help and is able to reclaim her life again!

My only random vent is here are the hearing parents who feel the hearing world is more appropriate for their deaf children. Tonight's event was a great reminder of how close knitted the Deaf community can be and so many little and older deaf children were so happy chatting away with so many people all night. It is a great reminder of how important that deaf children get exposure to the Deaf community whether they have CIs or not.

I don't understand families who have a deaf child and DO NOT KNOW SIGN. If I had a deaf child, I would expect members of the family to know some sign, including grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc. But these folks who have a deaf member in their immediate family and cannot sign? That sure wouldn't fly with me.

In my case, we were told by the doctors when I was 7 to not allow me to learn ASL. I did not take any kind of class except once when I was 18 with my father, but we never kept up as we did not know anyone else who really needed it like we did. Most in the class were just wanting to learn something new and the instructor was hearing.

yeah if i was hearing and had a deaf child, i would make sure everyone in the family learned ASL. how can you not communicate with your own kid?

it irks me that my mother, father, and uncle are the only people in my family who can sign fluently. the others couldn't be bothered to learn my language.

mbrek, there are actual biological bases for some mental illnesses. The brain chemistry is wrong. The neurons are not firing right, or the synapses don't have enough serotonin to transport the message, or ??? Especially for bipolar, major depressive disorder and OCD. These also happen to be the most genetic disease as well.

It's like telling a diabetic if she would just quit eating junk her organs would properly produce insulin and she would be healthy. BTW, diabetes is often genetically linked with hearing loss.

Have horrible day yesterday.

Executive Assistant of client mad at me because need clarify reporting relationship for her because she keep assigning work to *my* employee. She know annunciating and speaking a challenge for me. Because she mad she ask me, three times, before 10 AM, to repeat what I say because, "She cannot understand what I'm saying," and she have snarky? expression on face like she recognizes that I know what she is doing. EVIL PERSON!!!

Tell client, behind close door, that if she ask me, one more time, will hit her!!

BITCH!!!!!

Annunciation is a different thing entirely from enunciation.

e·nun·ci·ate (-nns-t)
v. e·nun·ci·at·ed, e·nun·ci·at·ing, e·nun·ci·ates
v.tr.
1. To pronounce; articulate.
2. To state or set forth precisely or systematically: enunciate a doctrine.
3. To announce; proclaim.
v.intr.
To pronounce words; speak aloud.

I personally do have problems with enunciation. Today I voiced my order for a McRib, went and sat down, and when my husband came with the tray, I had a Quarter Pounder with Cheese.

That's kind of a major misunderstanding. He said he told the cashier it was wrong but she insisted that was my order! :P

Next time I will write it down. My spelling and knowledge of words is immaculate. ;)

Some people can just be lazy. They expect us to fully assimilate into their world and us accommodate them.

When they deem us a success we are still somehow lesser than they are. When they think we have reached our full potential, they hold us back and say there is no need to continue on, despite us wanting more.

I wish my parents would have allowed me to be in contact with other d/hh kids growing up. But that never happened. I remember my dad telling me I need to hide my deafness or otherwise I would be knocked out of jobs. My mom used it to shame me. I literally grew up feeling ashamed of myself for not being 'normal' and feeling inadequate.

I hope these days parents who give birth to d/hh children are given more information relating to the use of ASL, proper support services in the educational setting, etc. Don't just force the child to be hearing when they are not.

Oh I understand. But I also think some people bring it on themselves or are helped into that state. I'd be interested to know about such phobias in third world countries. Somehow I can't imagine it's quite the same...

Funny. When I was working out in the snow... Barefooted.

I noticed a bit of coldness in the feet. No big deal, looked down. it was steaming!!!!

Pretty awesome if you asked me.

:giggle: Seriously? I did not know there was a different word. Will remember. :ty: Always think annunciate = forming words. Learn something new everyday.

Really, mbrek, because it sounds like you're being judgmental. If a person could think themselves out of mental illness, it would not exist. Who wants to be mentally ill? People don't want to be in that club.

Mental health problems represent 5 out of 10 leading causes of disability worldwide; amounting to nearly one-third of the disability in the world. Leading contributors include depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, substance abuse, and dementia.

Startling Statistics About Mental Illness | ASHA International

Schizophrenia runs in my family. My cousins weren't "helped" into their mental illness. They can't think themselves out of psychosis. It's tragic that they have schizophrenia and they will die early due to the complications of their medications and health issues.

My brother not sign one word. My dad barely sign, small bit SEE. Happens.
