it depends on whether a college or university has them available for loan. some schools have them while others do not.

have you thought about asking dors for a braillenote?

Thanks Dreama, I have thought about it Hear Again, but that means i have to fly to austin for a technology evaluation... I need to make an appointment to do that so they can get me a screen reader/magnifier on my laptop so i can stop running demos.

I didn't lose my sight until after I left school. However I did have problems with people at college not being willing to provide large print. Then when I got myself a CCTV they wanted me to sit out in the hallway because they said I was distracting the other students.

I went to RNCB blind college after that. I didn't have problems with large print but they did seem to think that totally blind people have much more problem then people with low vision (even if they were HOH too) so they treated blind and low vision people differantly. I think that probably caused a lot of friction. I think they have improved now. I went back 13 years later. They were ok with me and I was low vision but then I was also profoundly deaf as well. I'm not sure how they treat their students who are just low vision.

how were you distracting the other students?

From where you are now, what is it that you wish you had learned/received/gotten while you realized you were blind? Name 5 things you would do if you could start over again.

I wish my eye problems had been caught earlier. I wish I could have had access to a long white cane. Blind people should be able to use a cane if they feel they need it. I don't care about the social stigma surrounding the long cane--if a blind person needs it, they should have it. Period. I also wish I could have had access to programs like Zoomtext earlier on. I spend many hours straining my eyes trying to read regular print. Wasn't going to happen. And I also wish that children would be believed in general more often and not just assuming to be malingering until proven otherwise. Even if a child is complaining for attention, what is the harm of one or two unnecessary doctors' appointments? It's sure better than the alternative of leaving a child underdiagnosed or misdiagnosed.

I'm ok about it now. My only problem before was people suspecting Nika and I didn't want to drive Nika away from All deaf. Since Nika seems ok about it now I don't see any problems with your questioning.

Thanks for your concern, dreama. I appreciate it. I'm all right now, and I definitely plan on sticking around! <smile>

Wow, you run full time on demos? I would get so sick of having to reload the same program over and over again. If I were you I would definitely take the necessary steps to get permanent accommodations.

I'm trying, but that requires me to go to austin, and with semester starting, and everything, its not going to happen right away.

Yes. If you don't mind me asking, what is your field of vision in each eye? Is your acuity and field the same in both?

Lol, i kind of wish. My left eye has light perception, and my right eye has a 5 degree field with 20/200. you?

I answered earlier in the thread. But not far off from you. LP and shadows in the left eye and 20/400 in the right eye with I don't know how much vision field now because I have noticeably lost some since my last visit to the eye doctor.

I'm sorry Nika, and i'm sorry i didnt see it before.

many legally blind students are denied the use of braille unless they are totally blind like i am. it's sad, but true...

Definitely. I wish I had access to braille earlier on. But many educators are too caught up on making you use whatever vision you have left, so they use braille as a last resort. They would rather see you strain over a visual medium than use a tactile medium.

how were you distracting the other students?

Well they all went to have a look at my CCTV? The teacher couldn't wait long enough for them to calm down and get on with their work.

Nika: you're right. It was discrimating.
