i usually ask a sighted-hearing person to tell me what kind of items are in a vending machine, the number that is associated with each item and its' cost. since i have certain items i like, i can easily memorize their item numbers.

soda machines are simple for me to use. on almost all of them, the first button is always coke or pepsi, depending on who manufactured the vending machine. to find out what other kinds of soda are in the machine, i'll ask a sighted-hearing person for this information and memorize only those buttons that are for the sodas i like to drink. since most soda machines are universal meaning that the arrangement and layout of buttons is pretty standard, all i really need to know is if it's a coke or pepsi machine. once i have that information, i can pretty much tell what button is for what.

when i go to the grocery store, i go shopping with a clerk who finds the items i need. i give them a shopping list in print while i use one in braille. i can usually tell if i'm not given the correct item by the weight, feel and size of the packaging -- especially since i stick to purchasing the same brands for ease of cooking (i.e. not having to always have someone read me the label directions) and the fact that i don't like risking my money on certain brands of food i may not like.

thats cool. whats wrong with study hall?

study hall was boring. when i do my homework, i always have to study with music and i couldn't do that in study hall because walkmans and portable cd players weren't allowed in class. i could have spent my time doing something else like reading a good novel, but as you know, braille books are bulky and it was bad enough that i had to carry several volumes of braille textbooks without also having to carry an extra braille volume of a novel i wanted to read.

i completely understand. i cannot study without music.

yes i do. i have a lg cell phone that i use to make voice calls. i'm also able to send text messages to others, but obviously can't read them when they are sent to me.

I have a friend that is blind and he has a cell phone that reads his text messages out to him. Don't you have some hearing now? If so and you're interested I can ask him what he has.

yes, i'm able to hear with bilateral ci's. i didn't know there were cell phones that could read aloud text messages. my cell phone does announce every number that is pressed on the numerical keypad, but nothing more. if you could ask your friend what kind of cell phone he has, i'd appreciate it. thanks! :)

Absolutely! He's gone to bed now but I'll let you know tomorrow evening for sure!

i agree. i want the knfb mobile.

with the exception of being able to voice text messages, i don't see any reason to pay extra for software that only reads aloud numerical information. most cell phones (like my lg) have built-in voice synthesis so that this software isn't needed. the only thing i don't like about most cell phones is the fact that they do way too much. all i want is a phone -- nothing else (although text messaging would be cool.).

the knfb mobile is a kurswile reader, but in a cell, it will read menus, money, and many other things.

i already have an open book (which also reads money) and a vibrating money identifier. the only thing i need now is something to read text messages with.
