What does Canada do with it's slaughtered horses?

Good question - I know that until now, some americans sent their houses to Canada for slaughter - so if it's american-owned, it's up to them what to do with their meat after slaughter. Apparently, number of horses shipped to Canada from the US went up 50% after the last horse slaughter plant in the US shut down. I've tried hard to find out which percentages of horses slaughtered in Canada originally came from the US but have yet to find exact data.

As for general stats about horsemeat in Canada: Industry Statistics

"Horse: Slaughter and Exports

Horse slaughter numbered 89,030 in federally and provincially inspected plants in 2010. This is a 5% decrease from the previous year, and a 21% decrease from the 2008 figures.
15,733 tonnes of horse meat were exported in 2010. France and Japan continue to be the largest export markets for horse products.

And Jiro - the problem with horse slaughter is the same problem for any slaughter - inhumane conditions before and during slaughter. The problem, for me, goes beyond killing, it's the attitude that if there's no profit in compassion, then better to profit off of slaughter. Sounds brutal but it's sadly true.

Then we know things MUST be desperate if houses are being slaughtered. Wow...

Ah geez......More Fannie and Freddie conspiracy stuff.

I just don't understand why... Is there a lot of money to be made in this? Beyond everything else- it's not necessary to eat horses. I mean- seriously?! People already have enough meat to eat.

Anyways, back to topic. I really dont like the idea of making it legal for Americans to eat horses.

I'm not wild about the idea either and I do not think it will become the custom to eat horse meat anytime soon given our cultural taboos against it.
