Obama legalizes horse slaughter for human consumption

Huh, while researching why US wants to legalise horse slaughter and plants again, apparently Europe is US's biggest customer and Japan is second biggest. Horse slaughter had been alive and well, but just across the border. American horses would be shipped to Mexico then slaughtered for their meat. It's quite profitable but it would be more profitable if they didn't have to transport to slaughterhouses in Mexico.

I've rechecked my facts again and you're right. I should amend that to some European meat processing companies will not accept US horse meat.

My guess as to why the horses are being sent to Mexico is to escape the regulations regarding labor wages and benefits so they can lower the cost of doing business.

Probably, but you have to be specific as to what you're asking about.
Mad cow originates from proteins gone wrong. These are called prions. These prions are transferable to humans and affect the same DNA loci regions as cows.

Horses can have their proteins go bonkers too. All of us in the animal kingdom share the same DNA/RNA basics. The more difficult question is whether if something that originated from a horse (mad horse) is transmittable and affects the same DNA region as a human.
:hmm: That's something to consider.

Mad Cow disease resulted from cows eating themselves literally. Until it was banned and outlawed, there was cow meat and sometimes sheep meat in cowfeed. After they forbade animal protein in cowfeed, the Mad Cow disease was virtually wiped out.

And also because one can't sell horsemeat in the US without FDA's stamp of approval. So, to get around that, they would transport horses to Mexico to be slaughtered. Now that it's legal to slaughter horses in the US, they won't have to go to Mexico anymore.

I hope there's regulations regarding animal protein for horses too. Kuru has occured among humans because of a custom of eating dead relatives at funerals among the Fore tribe of Papua New Guinea.

It's similar to Mad Cow disease.

Chronic Wasting disease in elk and deer- same issue

Ok what the hell????? Read my screenname. Damn it Obama you said you were gotta sign it and now you did. shaking my head. Yea I am pissed. I feel horse is just a pet just like a cat or a dog. Wake up ppl. Those who do eat horse are a sick ppl. I am outta here. :io:

When I was a kid, my little sisters would not let our family call horse radish sauce by its name. We had to call it cow radish sauce.

They still call it cow radish.

I expect the Triple Crown races to get more interesting now. :hmm:

There's always a risk for eating anything meat based. :(

The crux of this argument is related to human morals. It's a really hard answer for anyone to judge. I mean, look at the Japanese, they're eating those mercury laden dolphin meat imported from Taiji (Minamata).
Some of those cantonese are eating monkeys, turtles, cats, etc (SARS). Native tribes eat each other in their respective jungles (Kuru).
Even hostile aggressive chimps eat their own chimps too, brain and all (HIV-AIDS theory).

The real question is who decides who gets to eat what? I guess it's easier to leave it to whoever is in charge of the culture or country.

which is why it should be up to each individual to decide for themselves what goes into their bodies. I came across a report from sciencedaily.com a few days ago that stated that half of the samples of packaged meat in America is laden with staph.

Loverly.

Can't really blame Obame for this anyway......It went through congress first. It passed the senate with a vote of 64 yays and 36 Neighs

And that brought up a question of how to prevent infection from eating contaminated food. Given our husbandry and farming practices, it's safe to assume that our food supplies (meat and veggies) are likely contaminated.

Anyway here's the source of my quote below - Stap-infection-resources:

This study highlights the need for Staph and MRSA infection control in your kitchen, especially if you have a history of infections. One of the best ways to protect yourself from bacteria in meat is to keep raw meat (and its juices) away from other foods, surfaces, containers, utensils, and storage areas in your kitchen. You don’t want bacteria contaminating other foods or objects.

And keep your meat refrigerated until it’s time to cook it. Staph and MRSA can produce toxins that will make you ill with food poisoning when ingested. These toxins can form when meat is left out at warmer temperatures. The toxins survive the cooking process, even when the bacteria are killed.

If you have any cuts or breaks in your skin on your hands, use gloves when handling raw meat. This will prevent any bacteria getting into those cuts and causing infection. It may not be a bad idea to use gloves when handling raw meat. This will help prevent any live Staph bacteria from reaching your skin, where Staph can colonize and live.

It’s also more important than ever to sanitize your kitchen surfaces regularly, and wash your hands often when handling raw meats. Sanitize and wash your cutting board and anything else that has touched raw meat immediately after use.

You should replace kitchen sponges at least weekly, or soak them thoroughly and microwave them on high for 2 minutes to kill off most of the bacteria on them. Be sure to use healthy and effective washing and sanitizing agents as most contain antibacterial chemicals that can weaken your immune system over time and can also promote antibiotic resistance. And also avoid the problems associated with antibacterial soap products.

Keep natural antibiotics handy for addressing cuts and scrapes and preventing infection. I always keep my Tea Tree and other medicinal grade essential oils on hand. It’s easier to prevent infections than stopping infections. Also, consider eating meat from farms that do not routinely use antibiotics for growth promotion (see more below).

What does Canada do with it's slaughtered horses?
