Obama legalizes horse slaughter for human consumption

Will Soylent Green be next?

:Ohno:

Too bad you can't eat feet as well as walk on them.

It's done in many parts of Europe though personally I don't think most Americans would consider eating horse meat even if it were legal.

A horse is a horse, of course of course
And no one should chow on a horse of course
That is, of course, unless the horse is provided by the Fed

Go right to the source and ask the horse
He'll say please do not eat me of course
Not even if he's a protein source
Back off Mr. Fed

People tend to munch and munch and eat their 3 meals a day
But horses should never be food, no matter what governments say

A horse is a horse of course of course
And horse meat should never be sold in stores
Wanna have one as your second course?

Well you should do this: Talk to Mr. Fed

If they're aware of what meat they're eating that is...

In Japan, a lot of the meat that was packaged as whale meat was actually dolphin meat, very high in mercury. Caused quite a scandal, especially because of Minimata.

I am just wondering though why agriculture wants so much to sell horse meat. Is this to replace fish (rapidly dwindling supplies) in pet food?

i think the French and the Belgium folks are aware. I do not think horses are often eaten there though. I don't think there's enough horses to go around to replace fish...

for sure but I mean in the US specifically, why US Agriculture wants to sell horse meat? curious about that.

:dunno: Most likely they will be selling them as exports to other countries. The Chinese will eat just about anything. Dunno about other countries. It's my understanding that European countries will not accept horse meat outside Europe.

Is there a mad horse disease?

Don't think so. Given the current practice of horse husbandry though, it will be a while before the horses will be free of hormones that would be illegal if they were raised for consumption. So people will not be eating American horses in the USA anytime soon. Hence why I think they'll be exported to other countries without such strict regulations.

It's against the custom in the USA to eat horses so I do not think we will be eating horses anytime soon though I can see them being used as pet food.

Huh, while researching why US wants to legalise horse slaughter and plants again, apparently Europe is US's biggest customer and Japan is second biggest. Horse slaughter had been alive and well, but just across the border. American horses would be shipped to Mexico then slaughtered for their meat. It's quite profitable but it would be more profitable if they didn't have to transport to slaughterhouses in Mexico.

Is there a mad horse disease?

Probably, but you have to be specific as to what you're asking about.
Mad cow originates from proteins gone wrong. These are called prions. These prions are transferable to humans and affect the same DNA loci regions as cows.

Horses can have their proteins go bonkers too. All of us in the animal kingdom share the same DNA/RNA basics. The more difficult question is whether if something that originated from a horse (mad horse) is transmittable and affects the same DNA region as a human.
