Has anyone else noticed there are less and less deaf people joining and it's almost all ASL hearing students that don't stick around...

Forums across all boards have been experiencing slumps in the main member base. :(

I've seen it talked about at 2 unrelated forums to here, they were talking about how a lot of old members no longer post or gone. Some of them have been around since 1998, I have been a member there since 2002, 2003, etc.

Some reasons why there could be less deaf people might be the same reason the think they have less people on those forums:

1 People stopped going on the internet as much
2 Facebook started around 2005 or something, but it was quiet until it boomed in 2008
3 Twitter / myspace
4 Youtube / vimeo / deaftv for us here

2, 3, 4 are the big theory for a lot of sites why forums are losing members. A lot of new members joining today are just asking questions about something that usually doesn't get answered well on FB or other places.

Facebook is why two other forums I'm on are about to blow away on the next cyberstorm.

So people are replacing spending time discussing specific interests with just letting their "real life" friends know what they are up to at the moment?

Also, AFAIK, FB and twitter don't allow for long posts.

I personally wouldn't find it as satisfying.

Facebook has got no long term memory. It is all about the very present which will soon be forgotten. That is why I like this forum. It is much more general in the number of topics and organized. I use Facebook too, and AD is an excellent complement.

This is why I only use facebook for personal, not too much social. I grew up with being anonymous on forums and I like them better than facebook. In facebook, it's also harder to have intelligent discussions.

Here is a site that I remember covers opinions on the story of why forums are disappearing
Forums: Precursor to Social Media

Right on the spot. FB is great for the wow-factor but less so for a continuous discussion involving many people and where space is required. But I would never use AD for showing 20 pictures if I have been to some social event. FB is better there.

I use a few forums for programming and science as well and there everything is organized if I want to look up some specific information, particularly old information.

I don't post to FB as much as I do here. I get tired of the people who post every time they blow their nose.

Things on AD seem to have more meat on them! I don't have the same sense of community on FB as I do here.

Yeah, exactly! FB seems to lack that discussion style of exchange, a kin to the older days of Bulletin Board Systems in the 80's . (Hey, I used to run one...)

Yes! But they always stay long enough to complain if I mention it. :P
