New planet discovered may have life

what purpose would it serve for higher-intelligent alien race by destroying us? If they're highly-intelligent and have the technological means of space travel, that would most likely means they have ascended above pettiness that we humans haven't yet - greed, selfishness, etc.
Didn't you see the movie Independence Day?

I had absolutely no interest in UFO's and the whole extraterrestrial "are we alone in the universe?" debate before 2004. None.

I used to think folks who saw UFO's were either nuts, or maybe just saw a secret government craft they were not supposed to see.

Then I saw something that was definitely not terrestrial. My first thought was "Oh, crap! I really really wish I hadn't seen that."

It was a black triangle. It was not a stealth bomber. It was approximately 2 miles wide. Even with my hearing aids turned up all the way, it didn't make a sound. I was not the only witness.

It was a perfect triangle with a bright light on each angle. It was the same thing that thousands of folks saw in Phoenix, Arizona. The same thing that the Governor of Arizona saw - later joked about - then a couple of years ago finally came forward and said "Yes, it was extraterrestrial in origin"

So ... if I am crazy, so is the former governor of Arizona and thousands of other folks who saw the exact same thing.

Why so defensive? Don't you realize Jiro also thinks sentient extraterrestrial lifeforms exist, just that he's too busy or occupied to bother taking up conspiracy theories as a hobby?

I aint attacking him. Just because I think it "might" be the most important discovery of our lifetimes while others say "meh" doesn't really bother me.

not really. don't be naive.

Indeed it would be a very profound discovery
not really.

let us look at the history. we went into space. Neil Armstrong walked on the moon and said "blah blah blah". We launched the most ambitious and costly space station project called I.S.S. - International Space Station. We discovered some microbe in meteorite that crashed into Australia - a proof of extraterrestrial life. We received the first sound recording and pictures of Mars at ground level from Sojourner and Pathfinder.

so what happened now? Nobody cares. Space Race is long dead.

They care more about the winner of American Idols than I.S.S. They care more about Lady Gaga's bizarre fashion statement than NASA's announcement for new spacesuits.

I think it would be very difficult to keep such a thing a secret. Especially in today's world were almost everyone has a camera.
difficult? lol hardly. it doesn't even take that much effort for government to cover it up. too easy.

let's be realistic here. It doesn't matter if there are HD-quality videos with surefire proof of UFO or aliens or alien autopsy. Billions of people still do not or will not believe it. In this time of advanced technology - it's too easy to make realistic visual editing.

Plausible Deniability. a very convenient and easiest dang thing to use for government to hide the truth.

We have all these billion-dollars satellites & spy toys and dozens of James Bonds..... and yet we still don't even know where Osama bin Laden is or if Iran & North Korea have nukes or not. Yep - not that difficult keep anything a secret. Hell - Saddam even fooled Uncle Sam into thinking that he had WMD!

I also don't know that I agree (or at least I have more hope for humanity than you) that knowledge of us not being alone would send us to our own destruction.
let me convince you - look at what happened when we had the knowledge of atomic bomb. or one's homosexuality. or the attackers behind WTC.

So - the recent study proving Mars has life means nothing?

Microbiological life mind you .....

what about it? it's a movie.
Dude you gotta follow your own train of thought. Go back and read YOUR post I responded to and then apply the reasons the alians were invading Earth in the movie which could be an answer to YOUR question.

It amazes me how you can speak for EVERYBODY. To have that much knowledge must be a heavy load to carry.

I'm sorry but how could I factor in a completely fictitious, silly movie to possibly answer my real-life scientific question? madness! :dizzy:

here's why Independence Day movie is absolutely ludicrous. As you already know - we are the most intelligent yet hostile species in Earth with earth-changing capability that only human species can have... something that's very God-like to many species inferior to us.

.... and yet... we do try to make every effort to preserve the nature and endangered species.

that much knowledge? lol that would be Stephen Hawking.

I speak with common sense and realistic pragmatism.

And I think by having a mass is also a cause for gravity too. Even all of us have gravity ourselves, but because our mass is so small in compared to Earth's, nothing will come to us. So even if a planet doesn't spin, gravity still exists because of massive mass the planet delivers.
