New bill would make ESRB ratings legally binding

If I was parent so I will allow my child to play teen/mature games whatever they want, long as they are well in the school and their behavior is good.

It was fair for me when I was child in past, so my parent was pretty open about games.

that's fine. this bill allows you as a parent to buy an age-inappropriate game for your child but a minor cannot buy it himself so I can't see why would you have a problem with it.

Texas law even allows you to buy alcohol for you child as long as they consume it in your presence.

Personally, I never let mine play any video games. We were to busy doing stuff outdoors.

My boys always wanted me to buy them games that were not age appropriate....and i flat out said NO....but...their friends had those games and of course they went to their house and played them....even swapped games and I would find a game that I had not bought them and was not age appropriate in their rooms....

It doesn't stop me from concern about government handling with those laws and I'm very protective of video game's culture, and freedom of speech. That why I don't support any laws that government inference with video game, even if law passes about rating and legal ramification, so I'm concerned about abuse of law on gamers.

I'm fine with self-regulated, such as ESRB and they are excellent rating for games.

That's ok, that's your decision. ;)

Same with Florida too.

but... in Alabama - it is opposite - illegal to drink until turn 21st birthday.

For me, I will not let my child to drink alcoholic beverage due to health concern.

Personally, as far as health goes, I would worry much more about my child living a sedentary lifestyle coupled up in house staring at a screen than I would about a child having a glass of wine every now and then at dinner.

Update: ESA responds to proposed bill.

Following the publication of this story, the Entertainment Software Association issued a statement on the matter. The ESA said it agrees with representative Matheson's ambitions to make sure parents are in control of the entertainment their children take in, but has issues with the proposed legislation itself.

"The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) shares Representatives Matheson’s goal of ensuring parents maintain control over the entertainment enjoyed by their children," the statement reads. "That is why we work with retailers and stakeholders to raise awareness about the proven Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) system, the parental controls available on every video game console, and the importance of parents monitoring what games their children play."

"However, this type of legislation was already ruled unconstitutional and is a flawed approach. Empowering parents, not enacting unconstitutional legislation, is the best way to control the games children play."

I don't think that bill will get out of committee or pass in the house of representative, because all legislations about related to video games failed, so only California's law but got struck it down.

You are parent and you have authority to pull the child away from staring at a screen, so some parents give time limit to play games or watch TV shows.

It is parent's responsibility to take care of child.

If video game is their's strong interest so they will going to be video game addiction after turn to adult age, after hadn't play games under parent's roof. They had done to me and it didn't work for me.

That is why, IMO, it is important to teach kids what a waste of time video games are. When they see video games fr what they truly are they won't have any interest.

It doesn't work for all kids, especially if they have strong interest with video game, so they will find around to play video game, like at friend's house. When they hit adult so some of them became addiction to video game.

My parent and the school counselor told me about stop focus on video game, but I just ignored them, so my parent realized it was waste of time to change my hobby. My sister is heavily gamer after 18th birthday after my parent restricted the video game for years. The video game is part of my strongest interest.

At college, especially at UAB, there were many students play Call of Duty series (COD) together at university dorms, so COD is very popular for college students.

That is where training comes in.

What about training?

I don't think it is working for one with strong interest in gaming and the children may have different hobbies.

There are some parents tell their child about use illegal rugs are bad for them, but they became drug addict after adult, especially alcoholic, smoking, meth, heroin, crack, etc. My cousin's parent was very strict and he became drug addict (heroin) after hit adult, so he breaks the law, like burglary.

The children have to learn itself in hard way.

Training takes much more than talk. you can't just train kids to avoid negative activities like drugs or gaming. You have to help them find passion for positive activities as well.

I don't see "video game" as negative activities. :ugh3:
