Nc Deaf Man Shot While Trying To Asl

Ok was he DEAF or HEARING IMPAIRED? Why he ran and what was he really doing.... stupid news cant get their shit staight at all...
Not a damn thing in this story says the man did anything so what DID he do to get shot? Im sure he wasnt picking his nose and scratching his ass.
 
Oh yeah, he got shot for driving like an idiot, simple as that, the police was already on high alert and to have someone exit and come at him... People need to read the books, sit there, hands on wheel in view... not a threat, getting out dancing like a monkey....a threat, especially after spinning out ( why was he driving erradically? ) his fault not the police.

Yep- the police caught him speeding at exit 30 (or around there) on I-485 (living here I know the speed limit is 70 on that highway..if you are going 70, people pass you like you're standing still...). The drive went on for SIX miles (maybe seven) until they got to his house. I'm pretty sure the sirens and lights were going and the cop bumped his car to get him to notice (reasonable move imho).

Some are saying maybe he went home because he felt it was a safe place considering he's had run-ins with the police before or to get someone there to interpret for him?? Others are saying maybe he didn't see the lights... come on.. *I* can see them in the day time with my wonky vision! (shhh...).

Both sides did things wrong- Daniel is a victim yes but I can't help but wonder how much of it he brought on himself.
 
I think he made the bad choice by avoiding the cops for 6 to 8 miles. He could have stopped, and be cooperate so he would more likely be alive. ::confused:
 
Maybe there should be something on license plates to let police know the driver is deaf or hoh so the police will know they have to follow a certain protocol . I guess deaf and hoh drivers really need to pull over and have some visual sticker saying they're deaf or hoh . Aren't police trained to take inconsideration a driver may be deaf or speak any other language instead of shooting then ask questions?

In the article they are trying to get some kind of flag in the system so when police run the plate it will say deaf/hh driver. I think that is a good idea.

I considered what if they put on the plate as well but I wonder about the safety in some neighborhoods of having everyone know you are deaf. Would the driver (or the car) be targeted? Could be. I don't know

In this case, it would not have been enough to flag him as deaf since he was speeding, failed to stop, got out of car when he did stop, and had a rap sheet so the police would have been more on edge and concerned for their own safety as well.

But as always in these kind of things, errors in judgement made on both sides.

When police are on edge, any move is one too many...
 
Granted the victim made a bad choice in continuing to drive six miles until he pulled over near his house, but the police officer made an equally or even worse choice in killing an unarmed person. Leaving a vehicle and approaching the police car is never a good choice, but the report and witness accounts have said the victims hands were visible at all times and there didn't seem to ever be a threat to this officer or his safety that warranted the use of deadly force. Unfortunately, all this officers lack of judgement has done is fan the flames and will probably lead to the death of more of his fellow officers. Clearly this officer should be put behind a desk if he is allowed to remain on the force and left there for the rest of his career. He will probably be given a free pass and continue to live out his life like nothing happened, sad but true.

I was thinking if it could only show up when the police ran a check on the license plate , not being seen by everyone else . I just heard on the news the family of the victim is trying to come up with some kind visual aid to let police know the driver is deaf. I will try to see if the story is online yet , some time news that on TV not on line too. WOW ! I found nothing about this on channel 7 web site ! I saw it on channel 7 on TV . Maybe it too soon to be on line.

Maybe? I don't know how widespread this story will get or even if people will put two and two together since so much of the focus is on the disproportionate killing of POC (killings are higher- smaller population but higher # of death)... Sadly it won't matter as people already are anti-cop so don't think this would fan the flames of anything.

There's been talk of having some sort of ID on the plate but as you noted- not really a safe idea- it targets people; a bit interesting since there are tags for disabled (the little wheelchair). Having something in the system is not a bad idea but it won't be nationwide- most if not all states DMVs don't 'talk' to each other as far as I know. Not all Deaf will want to do that either.

Also (though she won't see it)- this story is more or less mostly local/state in North Carolina- I did see it posted by Marlee Matlin on her FB so it's definitely making the rounds within the deaf community.

Uh, oh. One of the "experts" on Dr. Drew said that maybe we should rethink allowing deaf people to drive!
