Moving Out...

Update:

I have lived in 450 sq ft studio for over a year and half before moving into a house with my roommates.

I'd strongly recommended that you buy a FEW high quality pots and pans. Having too many will take up precious space you have. Don't forget to save space for all of your alcohol (if you drink) and all-purpose cleaning products. That way you'll save more money and space.

Buy small furniture that will fit into the studio. If it's too big, you're screwed. Furniture arrangement is so important, believe me. You could try to have imaginary separate spaces for living room, bedroom, and work space.

Oh, ahems, don't forget to buy some "protection" just in case.

Cheers!

 Thanks for the advice.

Unfortunately, the owner of the apartment, his girlfriend's friend, has offered them $200 p/w for the rent of his apartment which is $60 more than I can offer. I was pissed and I decided, that the studio apartment is quite too small for myself. But I haven't told him my decision yet. They are still thinking though. It doesn't matter, I am going to be attending a apartment inspection this afternoon which is 2 bedroom apartment for $200 p/w -- which is way better than the studio apartment. :D

Depending what is covered in the rent don't forget that once you move into your new apartment that you will have to pay hook-up fees for electricity, gas, cable for the t.v., internet, etc.

They do add up!

Nothing worse than buying everything and then realizing that the comforts will have to take back seat for a month or so.

But have fun!

I remember my first apartment. :)

I know about that. But I'll be fine though.

Good luck, Jake!!! I remember moving out for the first time and how exciting it was. It sure did beat living with my mom.

Everyone seemed to give u all the advice I could think of!

Thanks, Shel. I know, everyone has been sending me advice and all of them are good. Gets me in some thoughts of what I need and stuff when I move out. But If I like the apartment this afternoon, and get the offer from the real estate agent -- possiblity will have the opportunity to move in, in the next week. NOT 4 weeks! :D

I remember I moved out on my own for one year in 1 bedroom apartment which cost me 530.00 a month and I had lots of peace and freedom. While another part of my mom's house had a room added with bathroom. My mom had that house for a long time now 25 years. I moved back home and it was 3 months before my brother passed away in 99. So I still live at home and has my own space, bathroom, cable, computer and whatever I need for my entertaining. My room is at the end of the house and my mother sometimes gets frustrate, because she can't call my name when she needs me since I am DEAF :giggle: So I can CALL HER name when I need her.

Check this out.. Since now she use the phone and call the VRS from the HOUSE PHONE to get me instead of walking all way to my room. LOL this is funny.

It's good to find a place where you want to be and your space. Nothing wrong with moving out and Wish You a GOOD LUCK! I STILL WANT TO GET MY OWN PLACE THO when I wanna walk around in my undergarments :giggle:

I wish you luck as you venture out on your own, Jake! This is a big step for you.

As far as the computer goes, if you have a desktop that you can take with you, and if you were my son, I would tell you not to spend money on any big purchases that are not absolutely neccessary until you have lived in your apartment for a while. You can estimate what your expenses will be, but from experience, I know that something always comes up that you didn't plan on, so it's better to hang onto that money for a little while until you are sure that you can cover all of your living expenses without straining your budget. If, after 6 months, you find that you can afford it, then by all means, treat yourself to a new laptop.

Am I being too much of a "mom"?

I have decided to put the computer on hold. As I have already have internet and PC access at Uni, work and my SK3 (If it is fixed!).

I don't know about that. I think the system that renters in your country is quite different to ours, in Australia.

If the place catches on fire, or robbery, who is going to cover your losses?

That is what renter's insurance is for.

Renter's Insurance is pretty cheap. It cost me only $130 for 1 year for $40,000 coverage.

Update: Disappointing

I went to have a look at the apartment today. I was greatly disappointed on the house quaility and I was disgusted on what it looked like. I went inside, first I noticed was the smell! And everything was - old and one of the doors was smashed... I was out of here in two minutes straight! Fuck that apartment. I'll have to keep hunting.

Do set some $$ aside for the emergency fund. And good luck!

The good thing is that you know what it looked like. The other good thing is that you are ready to move out on your own. At least you didn't sign on the dotted line and was stuck with this place.

With those thoughts in mind, just remember that apartment hunting takes time and be picky about what you want.

Afterall, it's your first home.
