Mendoza Legislation AB2072 Nudges California Back to Eugenics

In the 70sm the oral movement was stronger than it ever had been and in that decade doctors and audiologists advised against sign language because it was believed to be harmful to good speech on the deaf part.

I suppose you'll just discount what we have told you.

I'm absolutely sure that is true.

What does it have to do with this bill?

No one said the bill promotes eugenics. The writer is the one that said it's a slippy slope toward it.

if you all feel that way. maybe deaf people should make a bill but do not consult a hearing parents at all. But I guess hearing people don't care because they are the majority and they know it won't pass.

ok, we will replace audiologists to someone who is an expert on ASL but have to give unbaised communication options and tools to parents.

Do we need to do another Deaf History lesson?

So, the solution is NOT giving parents information? Apparently audiologists are not telling parents about ASL and Deaf culture, this bill would give them that information. How is that bad? Can you give me actual reasons?

How do we make contact with this person? Does every parent get refered to them?

So, you advocate in tying the hands of parents for them to make an informed decision? Shoving ASL first is not the answer. Each child with a hearing loss varies. Each child's circumstance is unique. Parents have the right to be fully informed and the right to make their own decision. No where in this bill advocate eugenics. It simply helps make information readily available to parents whose baby has been diagnosed with a hearing loss.

I know that it is the audiologist does the infant screening test when they are born, but if they find out, then what happen? who talk to the parents? The doctors? When I wanted to breastfeed my child, they sent me LLL to teach me a few things about breastfeeding. They did send me papers to read on options. And doctors have told me how much I should be feeding and all from his medical viewpoints. But do audiologist visit the parent (in hospital after birth) when their child failed hearing test? or do they just sent the doctor to let them know and have them contact a social worker or someone?

After your child fails the newborn screen, they are refered to an audiologist for further testing. It is that audiologist that determines if the child has a loss and how severe the loss is.

someone who is an expert on these issues should discuss with parents after the audiologist confirm a hearing loss. His job is to test and fit hearing aids. And go ahead and let the audiologist be biased on hearing aids/CI . It's his job. But make sure the parents see an counselor or someone so they know their options.

I went to planned parenthood for free pregnancy testing. They tested me and when I found out I was pregnant, they did not send me to an doctor to talk about my options. no, they sent me to a counselor first. Of course I told them I wasn't interested in abortion, I just wanted to make sure I was really pregnant.

After the hearing loss is confirmed the child is enrolled in the state's early intervention program. The program sends out a teacher of the deaf to explain hearing loss and communication options and language to the family. The teacher will visit at least weekly until the child is 3.

so if this already been taken care of by Early intervention Program (communication options and all), then what's the problem that they need this bill for?

It would be done earlier, I believe. The audiologist is the first point of contact, so the information would start earlier.

I think the very first failed hearing screening test would be the time to hand out brochures.
