Mayor’s office: Jackson memorial cost L.A. $1.4M

People don't know him, or ever heard of him only that he had passed away the same day as MJ did. And I'm aware that he's a soldier that gave his life serving this country and to all of us he's a hero, but being in mourning may be different than being in mourning for MJ maybe because MJ is well-known to the nation, than Brian is. :dunno:
Many people knew who MJ was but that doesn't make him worthy of national mourning. It's understandable that his family and close friends would mourn MJ but not that the whole nation would.

I understand what you're saying, But, we can't tell the nation who they should and should not mourn to, The nation can attend funerals, wakes, memorial services, leaving flowers and gathering together to mourn to whoever.

Many people like myself had listened to MJ when we were teenagers, and MJ had always touched our hearts so we should be able to allow to have feelings and to mourn to whoever we wish to mourn to. ;)

The headline is rather misleading. The city did not pay for the funeral.

To quote,

Basically, the city decided to put 1/3 of its police force to make sure everything went smoothly. Did they ask the city to help out with the funeral?

If not, then the city is to blame.

This must be a joke! Why should the people have to pay for it?

It doesn't have anything to do with the funeral expenses, It has something to do with how much the city had done for MJ's memorial service, like putting in three thousand police officers at the event, and how they had to picked up trash, keeping the traffic under control. Don't the city of LA care about the safely of everyone?

MJ had lived in California since 1997, and had supported so much charities, and had never asked for anything in return. The nation came to stop to honor MJ and I sure cannot believe that the city is complaining about the costs. They sure have no heart.

I really wish I knew why people are always so critical of MJ. When Princess Diana had passed away, her funeral were watched by billions of people globally, and the inauguration of President Obama and yet I don't see anyone complaining about it. MJ never had a childhood and he lived his life through cameras and music. Give him a break. I believe he deserves every penny.

Just my two cents.

Yes I second that.

If Jackson family request the police, then is their bill. Who made the decision to send out thousands police should pay the bill.

Michael paid his state and property taxes in CA including LA for years and also did a lot of charities, it was about time he got something back. Yes he deserve it in return.

The article got me wondering because the city made millions profile in tax revenue thru tourists who paid their visit to Michael Jackson´s memerial.

My issue is why over a million dollars for one event. That's where I am a bit critical of...I just think it was way too excessive. $100K sounds more reasonable but $1.4 million???

Michael Jackson was known by the WHOLE world where he used to attend and sing. Everyone know him and his name became famous more than any singer/singers. They all love him. He knows how to woo the world and his fame started to soar. That's probably why it costs $ 1.4 million dollars. Like Princess Di, the WHOLE world loved her and she was the Princess of the people's hearts. They both died unexpectly ....untimely death. They both go out and met people they care about. They both care about children and they visited them. It was probably why the whole world love them both dearly... the money doesn't mean anythin' to them -- IMO.

Did you know that the parade for the NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers cost $ 2 million of dollars? And "The Staples Center" had gave $ 1 million dollars to the city for that event. MJ's memorial was the second event that was held in LA, so I think The Staples Center should pay something forward to that event since they were the one who made the tickets. ;)

Lots of citizens pay their taxes and donate to charities but they don't get free police service for their events, so why should MJ? Should famous people get services that ordinary people do not get?

Yes, the people arranging the Staples memorial should have also made the arrangements for the police and clean up. They have experience in arranging large events, and know what is expected. Between Staples Center and the Jackson family they should have made the payment arrangements to the city.

Citizen of Los Angeles should not pay for Mj or Lakers' parade at all while in finanace crisis. Tax has been raised two weeks ago for police and fireman thru voting and I do not think we should ever pay for Mj's funeral.

Mj did not give me anything why should I give him my money for his funeral.

Fans should help him out but people who live in LA should not force be pay for his funeral at all.

We already are broke, roads are so bad, teachers are being laid off , many more houses are being forceclosures, people become homeless and many more to come. Add more bills to force us to pay more taxes. Enough, enough.

To correct you... it was actually a global mourning. Although I didn't mourn for him. It's always sad when someone dies, but I didn't listen to his songs nor did he make an impact on my life. I know he did make an impact on a lot of people through music even though they never met or knew each other on a personal level.

I do think they did way, way too much coverage on the death of Michael Jackson. But what's done is done. Let's move on.

Just like Octus mother has 8 babies, State of California has to pay medical bills, residence did not ask for it. Why would State of California broke in this country? Spend billion dollars on ????? Where did the money go?

Yes, I know. I was replying to a post that referred to the nation mourning for him.

Either way, it was too much.

Yes, it would be nice to move on. I'm afraid though, we'll be getting future updates on his toxicology report, cause of death, estate, custody for his children, circumstances of the children's parentage, the plans for Neverland, criminal charges against the doctors, etc. Look how long the Elvis interest (and business) continues. Oh, well....

That's the mainstream media for you. They know they can get high ratings if they cover these stories in comparison to soldiers' obituaries and such. It's sad. :-/

I was going to say the same but you beat me to it.

Also, someone brought up about NBA championship costing money...that's basketball which is meant to entertain the public but a funeral? Unless the funeral was meant for entertainment? :dunno:
