Marry or Maiden?

not so surprising as man took woman's last name i know few who did :)

Yea at my first marriage me and my exh was gotta change it to my grandma's last name but didnt do it and glad we didnt do it cuz I dont want my exh to have that last name

I just learned that my friend whom I havent seen in a long time found me on FB. She got married and HER HUSBAND took HER last name!!! Wow!

No, I´m not surprised because I have witnessed that their husbands take over their wives´s last name after married..

And another example...

Husband´s last name = Smith
Wife´s last name = Schmidt

After married, their last name is "Smith-Schmidt"... I have seen many people like that.

Is that really legal in the US?

Pepsi, you could petition the court to change your name to "Marigold Snowdrop" and it would be allowed if you had no intent to commit fraud.

That's true.

One guy did that. He changed his name to Jack Ass, then tried to sue Jackass for copyright infringement.

Wow, some people just do the extreme things

That's crazy.

I wouldn't want to change my name to something crazy. My surname is crazy enough! LOL!

I made up my mind I'm going to keep the name I have now Its a lot of trouble to change it back to my maiden name.

I changed back to my maiden name with my divorce. Do you know that if you include a request for a name change WITHIN your divorce papers it does not cost you one additional cent? The divorce filing fee covers it already (and is not marked up because of the name change, it's the same fee regardless of a name change or not.) Maybe many people didn't know that. It's the law. The judge can deny the name change (if it seems fraudulent or for other reasons) but that would be addressed before the divorce is final.

You're correct about that one. When I got divorced back then, They asked me if I wanted to include the cost for changing back to my maiden last name. I chose not to do that because at the time, I felt it would be confusing for my children to identify my last name and their father's last name. And also, I chose not to do that as well because it's a hassle to change your last name on your driver's license, social security card, and informing various creditors, agencies, blah blah blah changing the last name.

Well it may be worth the hassle but I just didn't want to do that.

So - Right now I just introduce myself with my maiden last name but when I legally sign my name on a paper, checks or whatever it is - I still use my "married" name.

AlleyCat you are right I just don't want the trouble of changing it because of Bank account, SSN, driver license, my car, Insurance, Credit cards, all my bills. well eveything in my life.

That's a mouthful!

Ohhhhh---deception. A woman with a past. ;) :giggle:

I would make your ex-husband pay for the name change. Afterall--he expected you to take his last name and didn't fulfill his obligations towards you by remaining to be married to you.

Sorry Pepsi--I just don't agree with a woman taking the man's last name as I view that as "ownership" of the woman instead of a partnership. And that is what marriage is--a partnership. :)

Byrdie, I agree that marriage should be a partnership and not to be made to feel like ownership because of the last name, down the road I might get my maiden name back so I can remove myself from him :)

I don't blame you, that's too much to do

I would keep my hubby's last name.

Children definitely should too. People had the right idea of making sure children carry their father's last name. If you look at the DNA genetic testing, it is easier to trace down your ancestor on the male side than female especially when female do not carry the YDNA (which is why it is important for men to keep their last name and why it is acceptable for women to change their last name. ): Types of Tests - Frequently Asked Questions

how our society handle last name (without the hypen type, that is) works just like the Y-DNA.
