Paying bills
I don't like doing the grocery shopping because I have to think, "OK, we can afford to eat this, but not that." It's frustrating when my daughter wants something expensive like shrimp and I have to tell her "No, we need to save it for when we have the money and to celebrate a special occasion." What is really frustrating is that we can eat cheap junk food but we have to very carefully choose healthy fruits and vegetables, limiting ourselves to what is in season and on sale and making sure we only buy what we can eat before it spoils.
Do you at least have a refrigerator with a fair size freezer section? I as a single person have found frozen vegetables, etc. that come in bags really work for me. I can get out just the amount I want for the meal that I am preparing and the rest does not spoil before I want to use that item again.
I have a standard sized refrigerator, so I don't have a lot of space. I try to buy meat in bulk when it is on sale and freeze it. Frozen vegetables tend to be high in sodium which I am trying to watch. Also, I have noticed that some frozen fruits and vegetables don't taste 'right' compared to fresh fruit and vegetables. I have been known to buy frozen bags of mixed vegetables and steam them as a side dish to a meal.
Where are you finding ones high in sodium? I just checked my freezer and found:
Whole green beans, ingredients = green beans, sodium = 0
Baby broccoli florets, ingredients = broccoli, sodium = 20mg
Cauliflower florets, ingredients = cauliflower, sodium = 25mg
Corn on the cob 3" long, ingredients =corn, sodium = 0mg
Baby lima beans, ingredients = lima beans & salt, sodium = 240mg
Notice that the only one with sodium other than what naturally occurs is the lima beans. When I asked about that at the store I was told it is part of the process to shell and clean them.
I bought a bag of frozen broccoli and cheese that you steam in the microwave. I think the sodium was around 200mg or something like that. I can't remember the exact number. I don't currently have a bag to refer to, so my number probably won't be exact.
Yes those combination things can be high. Most of it comes from how they prepare it and in the example you gave probably the cheese. I was referring to bags that are just the vegetables that are picked and frozen period where you can pour out just the amount you want for how many servings you are going to prepare.
I have a tendency to buy canned vegetables such as green beans, corn, etc. Every once in a great while we will buy the canned fruit. I prefer fresh fruit though because canned fruit is usually packed in that overly sweet syrup. It just ruins the fruit for me.
I find that cans are not the right size for how much I want for just me for one meal. Besides that I like the texture of frozen better than canned. One of those individual preferences.
I think I forgot to mention earlier that, like you, I do buy meat, cut into individual servings if needed and freeze.
Yes, I have bought 20 pounds of ground beef when it was on sale. I portioned it out into ziploc bags and froze it. That lasted a long time. Sometimes I manage to get deer meat given to me to supplement my store-bought meats.
I haven't bought that much of any one thing at a time.
When its on sale and you buy it in bulk, its cheaper than trying to buy a bunch of the smaller packages.
