Is this right?

Oh true, but on the other hand, the quality of the sound is probaly really different from what hearing people hear. It would be like the difference in sound quality between a VERY early record and the most modren MP3 recording.
and not all bilateral CId people get that much benifit....Some do, some don't.....it really depends.

Allright...... Any lated-deafened people that now have CI around here that can get personal informations regarding this.???

I found this article....
“The more time that goes by my hearing gets better and better. Everyone thinks that the minute you are hooked up everything sounds normal, but it doesn’t. It does get better and better. You just need patience and do the rehab!” explains Mary Jane. “I am currently listening to music as therapy so that it will sound better with time. I’ve noticed a definite improvement.”

With bilateral implants Mary Jane easily uses the phone, communicates with friends and family, and continues to work without any problems. She also enjoys listening to music and attending concerts.
It shows that the brain adjusts to the different type of input and it shows that the sound she hears is close to normal hearing since she listens to music again. Had the sound be very different, then music would not be enjoyable. (a bad recording of a beautiful piece that one knows is NOT enjoyable!!)

Yes, late deafened people hear really well with CI. That is an established fact, that late deafies can hear really well with it. But that's not a good representation of what sound sounds like for someone who's never heard sound normally. If everyone with a CI hears like a late deafened person, then how come there are still people out there who have a "deaf sounding voice?" How come there's research out there to develop CI MEMs, which are supposed to sound more "nautural?" Yes, the CI is amazing, but the hearing with it, IS NOT like what hearing people hear! Despite what you think, most CI kids are not between hearing and hoh. That's like saying I'm "almost hearing" b/c I can hear a conversation downstairs with my Phonak Pico Fortes! The hearing is amazing, but it's NOTHING absolutly nothing compared with the hearing, that hearing people have!

No, her perception of what she is hearing is NOT the same as what a hearing person hears! I am positive if there was somehow you could experiance how an implantee hears, you'd be like "This is NOT hearing!"
Your daughter is more hard of hearing. She's in the middle.

She has learned to take a distorted stimulus and turn it into something meaningful for her. However, if she perceived the same sound in a different situation, it is not guaranteed that she would be able to disctiminate and provide the same meaning. With HA and CI, the distortion prevents generalization of sound and makes the discrimination situation dependant.

The fact that this woman enjoys music says A LOT!!
It indicates that the brain has adjusted to the input it received and creates a virtually normal sound image.....
Had it been distorted, music would have sounded awful!!

She hears like a hearing person..

Thank you Lily's dad for letting her to learn ASL even when she has CI and learn how to talk.

Cloggy, jillo was talking about your daughter, not the late deafened implantee......and I mean CI really doesn't perform that well for most always deaf kids. Even over at Hearing Exchange, they admit there's a wide range of performance for CIs!
