Looks Like We Need to Educate Some Hearing people

This is a messageboard that I lurk at. Found this thread today. I can't post b/c I've already used up my 30 day membership. I still cannot believe that such a smart messageboard could fall for the stereotype that all deafies are militant ASL-only CI haters. Let's go over there and educate them!
Straight Dope Message Board

After reading some of that stuff, I wonder how long it would take them to figure out that I'm stone deaf, with no real lipreading ability and most likely zero complete sentences spoken in a quarter of a century, if I just post normally without announcing it. :hmm:

I like reading the articles on that site sometimes. I didn't go into the forums before.

This reminds me of when my First Year Enrichment teacher at RIT said that she heard terrible stuff hearing people said there about deaf people. She didn't repeat any of it, so I wondered what those comments were like. Now I might be getting an idea.

This one’s probably going to start a flame war and wind up getting locked, but what the hell—you only live once:

Fuck you, Deaf “Community”

I thought post # 18 was particularly interesting. Anybody want to throw in their two cents? Personally, I think Subway Prophet just ran into the wrong bunch of Deafies.

Hahahahahahahah.............Levoian!!! I just posted that thread before you! BTW WELCOME BACK!!! I've missed you!!!!! It really irrirates me that such a "smart" group thinks that ALL deafies are radical anti-CI ASL only types.

Well, I think the popular media fuels that misconception. I’ve seen about three or four TV dramas in just the past year alone that support the mistaken notion that all culturally Deaf people are rabid anti-CI militants. One was an episode of Law & Order (not SVU; the other one), and another one had Marlee Matlin in it, but I can’t remember the show. It wasn’t that Hallmark movie in April, it was another show—I think it was CSI: NY. Anyway, in both shows and in that Hallmark movie, good ’ol happy-go-lucky Deaf folks were portrayed as suddenly becoming raving lunatics whenever somebody in their circle went over to the dark side. I think the Law & Order one had some dweeb killing a CI surgeon to prevent his girlfriend from getting a CI. High quality comedy at it’s finest, I assure you. I’ve never even met an anti-CI freak, have you? I know they exist, but there’s just not that many of them anymore. Most Deaf people I know were over that shit ten years ago.

Agreed...I have been accused of being anti-CI here on AD by some hearing members when all I was saying that I didnt support oral-only deaf education. Seems like many hearing people need an education, not us.

And they are still accusing us of being anti CI when nothing could be further from the truth. The truth of the matter is that those who accuse us of being anti Ci are actually anti ASL and Deaf Culture.

Yeah and the hearing people who teach their hearing babies sign language--think it's cute.

But lo and behold, they find out their baby is deaf, OMG! Slap the C.I's on them to make them hear and deny that baby to learn sign language!

What a contradiction.

No shit!

Seems like a lot of hearing people hate all of us or holding all of us responsible just because this dude had a bad experience with a few bad apples.

Maybe we should start calling them Anti-deaf and Anti-ASL...geez! They just made themselves just as bad as the few militants by labeling all of us like that.

This person is not a "Subway Prophet." They are a "Subway Moron."

I know...............I don't quite get it. Yeah, some deafies are still anti CI........but so fucking what? One person does not speak for an entire community!

Sounds 2 me like he couldn't handle the harsh reality of one of lifes lil bitches -

Ain't nobdy born perfect!

What's so sad is that they are refusing to see the big picture why many Deaf people value ASL, are against oralism only, and have some fears about CIs. Granted 20 years ago, I am sure many Deaf people raised hell about CIs but nowadays, people who have CIs are part of the Deaf community and there is more awareness and acceptance of CIs.

The real big picture that these hearing people are forgetting or refusing to look at is the long history of denying deaf children full access to language putting them at risk for language delays which has happened to many of us,l Deaf adults, when we were children. To have hearing people constantly discredit our experiences and suggestions by calling us Deaf militants or whatever brings back those bitter memories of being isolated, missing out on what is being said constantly, getting rejected or discriminated, and bullied while growing up in the hearing world full time without any exposure to other deaf children, Deaf adult role models, or ASL. Instead they just blame us for feeling that way instead of really stepping out of the box and seeing the big picture and trying to understand why many of us feel so passionate about ASL and the Deaf community.

Even as a Deaf adult who has accomplished a lot with a rough childhood being oral-only and mainstreamed full-time, I am yet feeling the way I felt growing up while reading that link with all the poster's comments about us.

It just makes me want to retreat fully to the Deaf community and have nothing to do with hearing people except for those who have understanding of our Deaf needs but that would just do me more harm than good since those hearing people really do not give a damn about the degrading stuff they are saying about a population of people who had nothing to do with the orginal poster's experience. I, for sure, did not and yet many hearing people will look down on me simply because I am a part of the Deaf community?

This shit is seriously f**ced up!

And the deaf in my town won't talk to me because I don't asl 100 percent of the time, but they can go out to eat with other deafies who can talk and make them order at the restaurant!

That's fine, I won't let them pet my hearing dog, either. :laugh2:

I am not going to go over and educate them. They have already made so many ugly generalizations about many of us and are so hell-bent on believing their misconceptions to justify on holding a whole commmunity responsible for one person's bad experience with a few Deaf people. They are not worth my time nor energy.

It is too bad cuz I could be someone they may befriend or get to know to but since they already made so many assumptions about me without asking or learning about the diversity in the Deaf community.

Just to shows how the many people in the hearing world continues to degrade, discriminate, and look down on us.

I was wondering when you'd come on the scene, shel. I agree that we don't need to "educate" them, especially when they won't listen anyway!
