In the event of a WiFi failure......

Do this ....

Then run around in circles like a mad man ...

I'll pass. I'd like to keep my sanity, thank you.

No, I'm not. However, if you had looked at my OP, I clearly stated that I had other options, three of which I own, and three of which I do not.

As for the router sucking yes, it does-- big time.

Oh for the love of god she was being sarcastic and making fun of you. Then I made fun of you because you missed the sarcasm, has nothing to do with you having backups, no I didn't miss it. Nobody is actually ohhhh nooooing about your wifi. Where is Scott with a little violin???

Well if it's a big house and needs to be connecting to multiple devices you can't go cheap. As Calvin mentioned, net gear is awesome. The owners probably cheaped out and the router is overloaded, or they need more than one.

Since you are not one family I guess it's best for each resident to have his own separate service. If you have your own it shouldn't matter what the others are doing. Don't worry about them. Get your own service, password protect it, and don't share. Don't even tell them your SSID, and don't use one that is identifiable.

Done and done. I don't ever share my passwords to my WiFi's with anyone, nor the SSID, either. I'd much rather have that kept private than let someone take advantage of it. And yes, I already do have my own service, like I said before. I'm not talking about their services; I'm only talking about the commonly used WiFi here in the house, which has had a problem for some time.

I honestly have no idea. What I DO know is that they prefer to use the house one, instead of their own, but as for me, I tend to use my own, instead of the house one, as I can rely in that a little better. I wish we could get a Netgear-- would be awesome.

You can also turn off the broadcasting of SSID name and put the SSID name in device manually and it'll find the SSID even tho it is not being broadcast. I do that with my WI-FI.

Would be awesome to do if I had the proper equipment to do that. Only problem is, property management has access to it, and I do not. This is why I prefer my own stuff to use, as I have control of that, and they do not.

Don't even think about the one that is property owned. You have no control of that.. I wouldn't even use that one at all!!!!

What I was saying that you can turn off the SSID broadcast on your own WiFi. That way only you can use it and always use your own and nobody else can use it if they don't have knowledge of it. Don't even bother with trying to use others WiFi

And I rarely do, anyways. I prefer my own stuff.

Like Secretblend says, don't even get involved with the common connection. If you have your own there is no need. Pretend the common one doesn't even exist.

I am working on that. I'm starting to get used to using my own WiFi's, and soon won't have a need for the common one anymore.

What is there to "get used to?"

I'll explain. My travel hotspots do not work well inside the house, while the common connection did, but when I step outside the house, the travel hotspots worked fairly well, and that's something I need to figure out, because I can't keep relying on something I know doesn't do well inside the house, but does good outside of it. I just may need to get a new Internet connection with Cricket, and end the relationship with Clear for once and all. If I am able to get this next month, I'll go for it, and go from there. I'll have to be careful which plan I choose, though, but I'm thinking I should probably stick with the hotspot part, just not with Clear-- from Cricket, which has better service.

So you do not have your own wifi connection at house. Only cell phone connections??

Ditto what the others said.. If the router is 11 years old- that's one reason why the Wifi is dropping out. Another is probably because there are so many devices on it and the router can't handle it. 11 years old- more than likely is not 802.11n compatible- just g (just a guess there).

Another issue is possibly the location of the router. Depending on where you are in the house, the signal strength could drop and be in a 'dead zone'.

Just my thoughts- I just got done resetting my sister's printer etc because she couldn't print anything from the laptop (again- not the first time). I don't know what they're doing over there- culprit I suspect might be my brother in law... lol. Neither of them are comfy with working with computers beyond downloading and basic stuff and their older child is away at college lol.

I swear I think that's one reason they want me to stay here with a job... ;)

Still trying to figure out why they still have the Verizon and DSL modem hooked up (both older providers they're with Uverse now....) *scratches head*... they make my head hurt sometimes...

Yeah, pretty much. It's not much, but at least the protection is strong, and the payments are reasonable. I can afford a travel hotspot, but not my own WiFi, which costs about $40-$50 more than what I'm paying for these two (A total of $45 for two backup options), and believe me-- if I could install my own, I would. I'd need to move to my own place to do that at, and the time isn't right for that just yet. You also need to go back and re-read my OP, as well. I clearly stated what I had, and what I could use.

Just a few more reasons to quit relying on it so much.... I had the feeling it was incompatible with what's required today, and you just confirmed it. I'll need to quit using it altogether, and start using my own, because they're stronger, and can handle more.

It's always a good idea to have a couple of backup options at the ready if you need them.

You see, a couple of my housemates who live under the same roof as I do have told me they've had problems connecting to one of the WiFi's here, and they're not the only ones, either-- I've had a similar problem myself, with my phone and tablet refusing to connect, but the odd thing is, my laptop is connected to that same problem WiFi, and I've not yet had any problems with it, apart from my tablet and phone refusing to connect to it. I done checked a friend's iPad 2, and it showed the WiFi as "disabled", and my other friend's laptop was showing my private hotspot being connected to it, and my tablet also shows the WiFi as disabled, as does my phone.

Any advice? I should tell you that we have two AT&T WiFi's here, and one Comcast WiFi here, and one ClearSpot WiFi, and one Android AP WiFi (That one is on my phone), and another one that's not yet been tested out is Android AP on my tablet, and I'm not too keen on trying that one out.

Double checked and you said WiFi on each connection above. WiFi and cellular connection are two different things. I am wondering if you are confusing those two.

All right. I'll explain more clearly. The AT&T WiFi's are the regular WiFi's here, as is the Comcast WiFi. Those aren't travel wireless hotspots, and stay inside at all times.

Android AP is a hotspot on my cell phone, and I can use it in an emergency, but I don't use it too often, because of the risk of going over. ClearSpot is a mobile hotspot I can take with me anywhere I go, except for Southern IL, where it doesn't work. I hope this clears that up for you. These two do rely on cell phone towers, yes. That much I can confirm.

God I am so bad with computer terminolgy. When the kids and hubby all get together all I hear is BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH. I guess having a few computer geeks in the family has made me lazy in learning these things. If I hit the power button and it doesn't work, I call hubby or my kids. Hubby has a huge computer room here and one time my daughter asked me to go turn it on because she needed something......I hate to admit it, but it took awhile to find the power button. Yes my kids think it's funny!!!!
