I feel like I'm the youngest here!!

Not really... (Still in HS)

But it's nice to see that you get to go places besides the big house!

I went on vac work for the first time when I was in high school, two years before I could finish!!

But the real stuff really comes when you are on campus...

And the reality strikes when you start work!!

Work...don't like it yet--I'm working for the man for $5.50 an hour.

Maybe I'll like it more if the minimum wage goes up or the store decides to promote me.

It's amazing how many of us actually start work at a young age, I work when I come home from campus, and also on Saturday...so it gets damn hard, well I get paid R75 per day, which is about $10...so its not too bad!!

 You should hear my dad complain: "When I was little, I worked my fingers to the bone, I work hard for you, and what do you do? Sit around and read!"
I find it best to let him roll on by...I do earn some money, even if said money is from "the Man". He doesn't complain as much as he used to since I've started working part-time.

Oh my word, I have heard my dad's story about making tomato boxes like a million times, and selling paper...when I started work, he was so proud, he literally smiled from ear to ear!! I bought my dad a watch with my first week of earnings...so he was mighty thrilled...I love to give my parents these small joys, because they have given their all for me!!

Kashveera

But half the time, I switch off literally when he comes round in the mood of telling his story of battling circumstances because he's said it so many times!! LOL!!

Being deaf helps sometimes!!

Kashveera

Tomato boxes? My dad was a janitor when he was my age...He put himself through college, and he was the first one in his family to go to college...

He was thrilled when I made First Honors, but I daresay he was happier when I got hired!

Our dads are very similar...eerie.

Yeah, my dad worked for a whole year, to actually get enough money to go to university...he was the 150th Indian to be accepted in his year...the last person...He always says: I didn't have a roof, and you got a whole house!!

My dad has finished my case, he's on my brother's-last weekend he packed my brother off to my uncles place to help fix alarms(my uncles owns an alarm company)!

Nothing like a little neopotism, eh?

But I now feel kinda sorry for your brother! I can only wait until he starts getting on my younger sister's case...that won't be until she starts HS--two years!

Honestly, I hope our mom's aren't so similar...then it'll be really freaky!!

Kashveera

Well, both our moms are teachers, and our moms have been honored because they've done such a good job teaching...

Please don't tell me your mom is a HS teacher (My mom doesn't teach at my school, thank goodness.) .

They always start when we are in HS...my brother is currently in HS, so he's suffering, I asked my brother where he is going this weekend, and he's parking off to my uncles printing press to help him there...he get's all the nice jobs!!

My mom is a HS teacher, and fortunately for me she didn't teach in my school either!! LOL!!

It can't get worse than this!! LOL!!

Oh God! That is super-eerie!

Does your brother get the good jobs because he's the younger one, or because he's a boy?

Well, both...

In our culture, the boys are always shown as the superior ones over the girls, they tend to be the apple of everyone's eyes...etc...it's rather sad that some of it still exists...wish it doesn't though!!

In my immediate family, my parents treat both of us equally, but in the extended family, especially with the elders, I feel the difference because my brother always gets spoiled, and I'm told, when are you going to get married...thats all these old people can think of...

Well, it's hard to "turn your back" on something you learned when you were young...And I'm sure you try to humor the elders--they're old, after all! You can't be mean to old people without making yourself look like Darth Vader.

My mom grew up with only one other sister and three brothers, and my dad only has two sisters, along with seven brothers...I only have three female cousins, out of thirteen...

Then throw in an old-fashioned Grandmother...

It's enough to make me scream.

Thankfully my grandmother is one person who really pushes me to achieve, she doesn't worry about old age traditions, its when you go for all these weddings, functions, prayers, then you have to put a Mahatma Gandhi type of mood, one of absolute tolerant and peaceful thinking!!

Thats were the problem comes in...Respect, when they tell you something, you can't say anything...that's when it all starts to test your patience...you know its wrong but you can't say anything!! It's really a mission to just shut up and bear all the unjustice!!

Diwali time (the festivities are similar to Christmas)...the guys always get the best gifts and the girls are sent to the kitchen!! Well, so much for gender equality, however, my dad always makes it a point to give me something so extravagent before Diwali starts so that I don't feel bad, I really owe my parents my life, for their understanding there!!

Kashveera

We have our crosses to bear...(although I'm sure you're carrying around something else, since you're Hindu :) )

Your parents sound really "cool"...
