I am getting my first audiogram done in over 10 years.

I would think try a HA before the BAHA, right? I've known two people with a BAHA though, and they seem to be happy with it. Glad you at least know where things stand with your hearing levels.

You can try a BAHA with something that looks like a headband before you go for the operation.

I've saw people do that at a vendor stand for D/d/HH people at a HH event.

The BAHA has a price tag that I can't afford so I will try the bi-cros HAs and see how they do. This morning I tried to get it out of my mouth that I wanted to go to work for Tyson again for the insurance, but my aunt shut me up when I got to "Well maybe I could go to work for-" then bam got shut down like a light switch. Ugh. We are getting chickens tomorrow evening, maybe she'll get frustrated enough to yell at me then I might just drag it all out at the risk of getting the boot. Ugh again.

No kidding. I'm not sure I want to run around with a screw sticking out of my head. Plus, it is very similar to CI but notably different.

It's one of those things that grabbed my attention and I was just curious about it. I'm going with the bi-CROS HAs.

What are the downsides of BAHA as I don't know anything about it other than it is attached to bone itself?

You have this weird bald spot on your head, you have a screw sticking out through your skin (looks nasty), and you snap on this big bulky box to the back of your head. It's also costly and requires surgery.

Dixie- I'd be willing to bet it's not as big as you are imagining. Probably 1" by 1 1/2" maybe. I understand you not being interested in that at this point (or ever), but I just wanted you to know it's not huge.

Would you ever get a BAHA if the circumstances called for it?

Why is it fun? As a person who chose a CI, he is mocking my choice, implying that it is unacceptable. Why is that OK? What if I went into a thread about a deaf person discovering and learning ASL and posted a sarcastic remark that implied that they wouldn't need ASL if they got an implant? You guys would chase me out with pitchforks and torches. But PFH can denigrate those who chose implants without any sort of retribution, and as soon as someone points it out, they are vilified instead.

You really need to get over yourself. Nothing was directed at you or your choice. In case you haven't figured it out, none of us particularly care what your choice was.

Dix, I'd been monitoring this topic for awhile since I thought I found it interesting we both had unilateral loss. I hadn't met too many people who did have unilateral, I remember reading it's not common and occurs even less frequently than those who are deafened. After you posted your audiogram it did look sort of different for us. Kinda interesting how it fits the concept of 'no two deafness being alike'.

Hey, BTW, I got my audiogram recently after not having one for over 10 years too. :P

I wasn't sure. I don't recall you mentioning them. What kind do you have?

Yeah, no one has really asked me about them.
I've never had a major brand of HA I think, they've always been small time company custom-made cause of the audis I went to. Although I think my oldest BTE might have been siemens, I'm not sure, it is over 20 something years old and the labels wore off.

And they STILL work ??? WOW! I can't get mine to last more than 10 years.

I just busted it out and tested it, yep, still works..
I remember using them last around up to a year before I joined AD when I broke my other HA.
It's my backup-backup-HA

Just looked more closely and saw under the battery door, it is by Siemens, 1986. :)

Good grief. ;)

Lots of dry air in the California desert. :P

That HA has been through tough times with me!
I broke off the switch knob thing, lost a cap cover, I even remember losing it in 3rd grade in PE, I put it in my shirt pocket because of the sweat. It popped out sometime and the whole class did a half hour hunt for it, some kid named Jason shouted to the whole class "I found your thingy!".

Everyone was on their knees like a scavenger hunt in the grass. Thing's like a tank...
