Hurricane Earl

I live right off the Chesapeake Bay so if it turns and heads directly to us, it will be a huge huge concern for us. Like you, I am keep an eye on it. We have a natural disaster kit ready. Been prepared for 2 years now...I better check the clothes just in case they are too small for my son.

double-check your kit. make sure it's in a working condition.

2 yrs, eh? Well, if you have some "long-term" perishables, check their expiration date.

Be safe and be careful out there whenever it tracks to affected areas. That sucks when it comes on labor day weekend coming up.

Hurricane Floyd...ah man...now that's nightmare for the deaf. Some deaf people were clueless that the flood was on the way because most of warning and announcement weren't captioned or done by audio.

I even heard of stories where interpreters said they would step in and volunteer to interpret for free on TV and news crew refused em. O.o

I feel bad for some deaf who didn't know until the very last minute (practically not until neighbor was kind enough to warn em or something) and couldn't pack what they needed before it came.

Also, I even heard of one story where deaf drove in hurricane not knowing it was hurricane to visit her friends all because news did not caption what was going on.

This is why I think after that point, NC set up a new program to give out weather alert radio designed for people with hearing loss. All so that deaf people and many others never have to go through this again. That radio is free for deaf people if they are eligible for it.

I look at the path of the Hurricane Earl. I hope it does not hit us on the Maritime coast, Quebec and Ontario. It will probably arrived on Saturday or Sunday unless the hurricane die down. Having the hurricane is a beast and not safe at all. So anyone who live on the East Coast of USA need to find a safe place away from the low level of water. I wish they would have gone to the "Hillbilly" mountains for higher safer away from water. That would be great. :fingersx: I will pray for you if it comes on Thursday. :)

I just watched the news this morning and was surprised that the Hurricane Earl will reach in Nova Scotia in the Maritime coast on Friday. So I was wrong about Saturday or Sunday. I am way far from there to Lake Huron where I live on the Manitoulin Island. So I am not going to worry about the hurricane. It is too far anyway. But I still am worry about ADers who live on the East Coast so please stay safe. Deafskeptic, if you had experienced being in hurricane as I have never been in an hurricane before, never in my entire life. OMG. I am very lucky that I don't live near the East Coast or the West Coast. Earthquakes and hurricanes are just a mess and very dangerous to the lives of the people who has to live there. So I will continue to pray for all of you, Aders. :fingersx:

It's not a good idea to use candles. They aren't as safe as battery lights. If you have a house fire after a hurricane there's a good chance that the fire department won't be able to help you.

I would use the candles after the storm was over and if the power was out for a few days. I have some light that run on battery and have flash light all over my house . I have a battery light right next my computer too . I am very care when use candles ,I do not use candle stick holders, they can get knock over too easy or the candle could fall out. I have to care as my dog could knock a candle over too.

If you can't have a generator in your condo you could always get an A/C adapter for you car. These cas be used for recharging batteries and running a hot plate in a pinch.

There are also small generators that can run off of your car too..

Jiro, I have a very similar stove as your Pocket Rocket stove except that it is a Coleman, I think. It is quite old now so I dunno if I could get it going now.....I used it for backpacking way back when....

avoid this stove (Dragonfly Stove) or related at all cost

msr_dragonfly_stove_thumb.jpg

it is unreliable and it breaks all the time. I had it replaced 3x in short time. It's messy. clumsy. and unnecessarily complicated. and aggravating.

I prefer the Primus brand... and Trangia. :)

Oh, and ZZStove is nice to have.

Not a big fan of butane types like MSR or Coleman because they're not wind-resistant.

well there's no point in having a wind-resistant stove because you can't really cook during windy condition but if the situation really requires it - you can simply make stove windshield like this (it comes with DragonFly)

or dig a hole.

Just speaking from experience from camping out on the Prairies. :) I heard some people who camp on beaches encounters the same issues.

that's why Dragonfly fails. I rather waste my time with 2 flints and cottonballs.

Things like JetBoil, Primus, and Trangia where you attach the fuel canister w/ stove at the bottom of mug or pot... :thumb:

I looked into ZZStove. Looks interesting.

ZZStove = Only use in cases where alcohol, liquid gas, or white gas doesn't benefit. Collecting twigs and trying to dry wood... kinda sucks, but it's more efficient than building a campfire.
