how does one find job for deaf

I imagine all have. Mostly as in , "You are such a 'tard!" when a friend does something funny and off the wall.

Keep in mind, it was an attempt to be PC that gave us the phrase "hearing impaired" as a replacement for deaf. Sometimes people get on soapboxes they have no business being on.:cool2:

I think phrase hearing impaired is retarded. :P

Why are you putting absurd things in peoples minds?

I'm not the only one who believes it's inappropriate to use that specific word, in that manner. Some have spoken up, and some haven't... I suspect for a number of reasons.

Stop twisting reality.

Please.

It's gone overboard at this point.

Don't you think that in some sort of way you are perpetuating the cycle, by attempting to lead people to believe that in my mind I am coming from some place of Superiority? That I am better than those "poor wittle deaf people"?

That I am talking down to, and patronizing DHH posters here, thinking they
don't know the difference?

Total.

Insanity.

What I posted is reality. It is the way you are perceived. You seem to be the only one that doesn't realize it. How many times, by how many people, do you have to be told before you grasp it?

And here we go again: righteous indignation! "How dare the Deaf community reject my well meaning attempts to teach them to behave properly! Why, this is just insanity!"

Depends on the context. "Retarded" is actually a very valid word, depending upon how it is used. It simply means "delayed".

Kids that have Downs Syndrome protested about being called "Retarded" . There was an agency that helped kids that have Downs Syndrome and the word "Retarded" was used in the name of the agency . I do not remember what the agency was called , but the kids did not like being called "Retarded"
and protested it and won! The word "Retarded" was removed from agency title.

CSign - then would it be a slur to call anyone dumb because of the "deaf and dumb" thing?

When I was growing up, the word "deaf" was considered demeaning and I was discouraged from using it.

It's one thing to call someone who has developmental challenges "retarded" and quite another to call someone who is being stupid "retarded".

The word retarded is from the french language - "en retard" - to be delayed.

I am not a big fan of excessive political correctedness. It whitewashes and waters down truths.

Right on!!!!! Thank you!

Ms.Katie:

that's a hard Q to answer...

it is my experience that there are too many hearing people that treat deaf like they are stupid or retarded...so because of that attitude, they want nothing to do with the deaf.

find out if there is an unemployment office in your city...hopefully they can help you find work...and maybe even get you some training of some kind.
Do you go to Deaf social clubs?? If so, ask around, maybe someone knows something that you do not know....maybe they know of a place that is looking for deaf workers...do not give up hope...there IS a job out there, it's just hard to find right now....

What about fast food?? McDonald's, Wendy's, or Burger King? maybe they are willing to hire someone like you who is smart & willing to work hard...

Why does this post strike me as incredibly odd? :hmm:

Because it sounds like a sales pitch & not a helping hand....
I think this person is trying to sell her something....or maybe trying to take advantage of her.

No doubt! If I had a nickle for everytime someone called my son "retarded" just because they knew virtually nothing about his deafness, I could have retired 10 years ago. If I had a nickle for every teacher in the mainstream I have encountered that actually believes that deafness causes cognitive deficits (e.g. retardation) I could have retired 20 years ago!:P

and when you combine the 2, you never would have had to work ever at all. :cool2:

I've reported that poster for spamming. We don't need questionable offers like this one.

To judge a person without merit, is to put that person into a box, or group in which they have no desire to belong.

Therefor, I encourage everyone to take the time needed to ask about your neighbor, learn what makes him/her say & do the things they say & do, then & only then, if it still needs to be done, only then judge them, but do so with a the weight of a feather.

Csign does not bother me...nor does anyone else with an ax to grind.

HE/She has made their point that either:

they do not like that word

they are looking for a fight

or just maybe they have an INA deficit (INA = I Need Attention)

I am and always will be, really big on respect.

I respect people's rights to say whatever they want, whenever they want, just not always however they want.

I will always do my best to show respect to those people who have been disrespected or oppressed by others, regardless of their mental IQ and/or capacity.

I will always do my best to be a Gentleman...I know that there will be times when I will do something stupid & not appear to be a Gentleman, but I am human .

I always refer to a female as Ma'am. EX: Yes Ma'am; No Ma'am

I know that I am not perfect, but still I try to be.

I prefer to be your best friend....but I can also be your worst nightmare if treated less than respectful.

I totally love the "INA deficit" phrase. I have to borrow that one!!

:

I imagine this not truth on board full people who grew up be call retarded just because deaf. Retard, tard, retarded...these words should not use. Original meaning eclipse by derogatory meaning. Same same gay technically mean happy, but someone says "you so gay" we not SERIOUSLY believe they mean you so happy? Come on now.

Yes , this is very common as I have deaf family your age. It is terrible the discrimination that still goes on in the year 2011. Good news, there is a company completely devoted to the Deaf. A true Deaf team with interpreted trainings and incredible support. Deaf motivational speakers like Calvin Britt fully endorse this business. Thru worldwide breaththrough communication, the mission is to "give the deaf a voice" PM me please and my wife can assist you immediately via VP or email. In fact if you are motivated I will personally get you started at no cost and free training. Positivity and communication is the key. Start working in 25 minutes. As my family has learned VR cannot be trusted and the government doesn't care. Look on face book for testimonies from Calvin Briit, Jim Beach, and Jessica Irene Friedman. Don't delay

Free training, that is what I am looking for.
