how does one find job for deaf

Wow, so judgmental. Aren't you? I'm so glad I have you on ignore still. Don't fuck with me. Learn more about our culture before judging us, kthx. <3

whoa what happened?

The thread which got locked and removed was caused by Audiofuzzy calling poster (probably me) a retard. That's what I was referring to.

Nobody was jumping down your throat, and I excercised great care when determing how I was going to respond.

As to how you used the term in your post, it most certainly wasn't used as a compliment. I perceived it to be an insult to the "middle managers". That is why I tried to bring your attention to it. You certainly got your point across, but you could have used any other word that would have conveyed the
same meaning... The following are some to choose from:

Just saying: You doing this shows that you have no knowledge of the deaf culture, or what it is to be deaf....

We are generally blunt. We generally aren't PC. We say what's on our mind. If you are at a social and see everyone tossing non-PC terms around without being offended are you going to toss a thesaurus at them?

Just pointing this out because you have shown a lack of understanding when we tell you things like this in the past. (Hence my "shhhhh" post)

Yes, thank you jillo. Guys do not jump down my throat for the usage of that word in that post. I don't generally use that word as an insult......and it was not meant as an insult in that post at all. More like as a synonym for someone who has a brain but refuses to use it. I would never generally use that word to describe someone with an intellectucal disabilty or use it as a general insult or anything like that. jillo sees what I was trying to say......

I got your back here too.

I'm well aware that being blunt is an almost inherent part of Deaf Culture. There is a difference between being blunt and using a term like as an insult to a person. You can't say that a term like that is okay because you are blunt, and then complain when a person refers to deaf individuals as, "deaf and dumb".

I'm blunt, but I don't make comments at other peoples expense. Especially when it's something they have no control over.

CSign - then would it be a slur to call anyone dumb because of the "deaf and dumb" thing?

When I was growing up, the word "deaf" was considered demeaning and I was discouraged from using it.

It's one thing to call someone who has developmental challenges "retarded" and quite another to call someone who is being stupid "retarded".

The word retarded is from the french language - "en retard" - to be delayed.

I am not a big fan of excessive political correctedness. It whitewashes and waters down truths.

Why would you choose to pick out that one word to take the thread off topic?:dunno2:

Pointing out inappropriate language good thing, not derail thread.

The thing is that correlation doesn't really work because the implication is that the person is dumb because they are deaf. A person can be dumb, but not be deaf.

Also the use of the word, "retarded" in that context implies there is something wrong. Therefore anyone who is cognitively challenged is "defective" or "wrong". Isn't that what d/Deaf individuals fight against all the time- the perception that a person is "defective" because they are deaf?

I'm a bit surprised that I'm met with such resistance at not using that word as an insult to another person.

Crazy.

You never called anyone a bitch or even thought of them as such? It's an insult and a slur.

so, you're saying dumb alone is not bad, it's "deaf and dumb" that's offensive.

well, i could say "retarded" is not bad, it's "mentally retarded" that's offensive when used as an insult.

sallylou used the word "retarded" to describe incompetent managers, not Deaf or developmentally challenged people.

Audiofuzzy was the one who asked another poster if they're mentally challenged in regards to how they interpreted what she wrote.

Guess who got banned?

And the poster still does not understand that when she undertakes things like this, she comes across as patronizing and insulting.

"Now, now, Johnny. We musn't use words like that. I know that you didn't mean any harm, and didn't know any better, but I don't expect it to happen again. Understand what Mommy is saying?"

"Deaf and dumb" is fictitious, at least in the vast majority of cases.:giggle:

And, yes, the deaf can, and do, object. Obviously you are missing that!

Depends on the context. "Retarded" is actually a very valid word, depending upon how it is used. It simply means "delayed".

Unfortunatly, in most contexts is that it's intended as an insult.

I hate to tell everyone, but "retarded" is actually a very acceptable word used to describe any number of conditions.

I've used the word retard to describe certain Pvpers (players vs players) in Alterac Valley because these people would zerg (overwhelm) Van (alliance boss for horde side) and win AV without without any defenses. As a result, for a very long time this was a guaranteed loss because none of them wanted to actually engage in PvP and defend captured bases. They said it was just too much work. They felt a little honor was better than none. For some reason, they thought zerging van was a win. :P That was a year and half ago. It was a guaranteed loss to tell the truth.

Nowadays you can win via this strat. I'm not sure if it's because the Alliance have gotten slack on recapping or the game mechanics changed or if Horde got smarter.

I would call those who zerged Van Zerg tards.

Intended to mean backward, slow thinking, or ignorant. I think it is an apt description of some people's behaviors.

Too be honest, I've called people retards. More accurately I'd call them tards.

Forgot to mention this was on World of Warcraft.

Why are you putting absurd things in peoples minds?

I'm not the only one who believes it's inappropriate to use that specific word, in that manner. Some have spoken up, and some haven't... I suspect for a number of reasons.

Stop twisting reality.

Please.

It's gone overboard at this point.

Don't you think that in some sort of way you are perpetuating the cycle, by attempting to lead people to believe that in my mind I am coming from some place of Superiority? That I am better than those "poor wittle deaf people"?

That I am talking down to, and patronizing DHH posters here, thinking they
don't know the difference?

Total.

Insanity.

I imagine all have. Mostly as in , "You are such a 'tard!" when a friend does something funny and off the wall.

Keep in mind, it was an attempt to be PC that gave us the phrase "hearing impaired" as a replacement for deaf. Sometimes people get on soapboxes they have no business being on.:cool2:
