how does one find job for deaf

No doubt! If I had a nickle for everytime someone called my son "retarded" just because they knew virtually nothing about his deafness, I could have retired 10 years ago. If I had a nickle for every teacher in the mainstream I have encountered that actually believes that deafness causes cognitive deficits (e.g. retardation) I could have retired 20 years ago!:P

Oh boy such people piss me off. My parents think I have a low vob and always try to explain what the words mean to me even though I tell them I know what they mean.

Yeahhh. some people learned that I don't speak and they act like I can't read or reply or something. I had to show them by writing them in a paper and a pen and asked what they were trying to tell me something. Of course, I even signed them and they said " wait wait hold it, i can't understand you and i dont know how to sign". I smile and then i said in a voice, " I know. " with a plain smile while I pointed at the paper. They look surprised. I only can speak in basis words. LOL

:ily:, FF! Talk about an empowered Deaf woman!

Why would you choose to pick out that one word to take the thread off topic?:dunno2:

Uh, not taking the thread off topic. Pointing out my distaste in the way that word was used. Same way I would point out my distaste if someone said, "oh she is deaf and dumb" or she's "stupid because she can't talk". It's degrading, and insulting- especially when there are countless other words to use to convey the same meaning. Remember- it's all in context... ;)

Yep, taking things off track, as usual. The intent of this thread, context if you will, was to talk about finding jobs for deaf people, not your distaste of a word.;)

Apply at Palmdale Mall, I see several jobs are offering there right now for Christmas. U can drive there from Rosamond. And also make an appt with VR in Lancaster. Too many people are out of job here in this area. And also try apply few Walmart in Lancaster, I know several deaf people work there. Good luck.

Also we have AV community college here in Lancaster, which they have disabled office to help people alike you and me. They have excellent interpters plus we have many great deaf teachers who teach ASL classes there too.

Thank you jillo!!!! CSign, I do see your view and normally I do not use that terminlogy as an insul, or even as a description of someone's cognitive abilties. . I have many friends with intellectucal disabilties. However in this case, I was using it more as to describe people who have a brain, but refuse to use it. THOSE people ARE pretty much almost literally retarded. Besides, what's wrong with the term retarded? It just means slow. I was describing the middle manager as SLOW.

Any time that is used we should speak up. Just like deaf and dumb.

Depends on the context. "Retarded" is actually a very valid word, depending upon how it is used. It simply means "delayed".

Yes, thank you jillo. Guys do not jump down my throat for the usage of that word in that post. I don't generally use that word as an insult......and it was not meant as an insult in that post at all. More like as a synonym for someone who has a brain but refuses to use it. I would never generally use that word to describe someone with an intellectucal disabilty or use it as a general insult or anything like that. jillo sees what I was trying to say......

Nobody was jumping down your throat, and I excercised great care when determing how I was going to respond.

As to how you used the term in your post, it most certainly wasn't used as a compliment. I perceived it to be an insult to the "middle managers". That is why I tried to bring your attention to it. You certainly got your point across, but you could have used any other word that would have conveyed the
same meaning... The following are some to choose from:

I wish there weren't "levels" of how our brain works. Retarded, deaf, etc. We are what we are... I have even met normal hearing people who would have qualified to be in the "retarded" category...

Let's not judge.

Fuzzy - you watching this? take note.

Wow, so judgmental. Aren't you? I'm so glad I have you on ignore still. Don't fuck with me. Learn more about our culture before judging us, kthx. <3
