How do you handle certain situations?

American law doesn't operate on web searches. It's a complex process of laws and context. The very fact that you think it's something you look up on the web and get an answer shows that you don't understand that. It is nothing at all like a State Constitution test. I have a bachelor's degree in political science (and holder of the PS major award for the year I graduated) with several law-related courses under my belt, and I wouldn't dream of providing legal advice to anyone. I would say, "Let me help you find legal services," which I have done.

And which I should be doing. Also, this female friend hasn't texted me in several days now, so maybe the issue is dead now. Last time I heard from her was Monday, but nothing since.

have you taken Illinois law exam?

No, and like I've said previously, I told her to get herself a lawyer, and not depend on me. Since I've not heard from her in more than 72 hours, I think it's all but done.

But you said she's coming into town next month?

She is supposed to, but since I haven't heard from her in 72+ hours, I'm guessing something came up, and I'm going to leave her alone. I'm not one to go poking my nose where it doesn't belong.

He is keeping her from learning how to be on her own . If every women lost their 'sanity' every time something wrong in their relationship the hospital psychiatric units would be overflowing with 'crazy' women. I personally believe women are a lot stronger than you think they're. Just look at the women on this forum and what they had to overcome to get where they're today. Stop making women look weak!

nothing to do with weak women he talking about a friendship which he doing good with....sadly there many women in psychiatric hospitals due to bullying violent husbands open your eyes

Lady I very aware of women being abused by men but Chicagoblue did not say his friend was getting beaten up and you're telling me nothing about being abused by men . I was health aide and helped solved a case of a client that had Alzheimer and my company could not prove her husband was beating her up. I helped get the poor woman removed from her home to a nursing home. It was a very horrible case of abused because the woman could not remember who was abusing her and pushing her on floor all the time. I was given the case because my boss knew I was very observing .

Just because he isnt a lawyer doesnt mean he cant help her. I have two years 4 month old daughter and are goign through the same thing so i completely understand. What you should try and do is there to a certain point. Tell her that you will be there for her in support and input your opinion and you do know IL law but laywers know more of course. But laywers are not always helpful. They can be there for legal but not so much emotional support. She could also look for a single mothers support group to get advice from others mothers in the same situation which would help you out.

Very good. Yes, I am indeed handling the emotional part of the whole thing-- I'm the only one capable of making her feel better, and that's why she needs me-- she knows she can bother me anytime she feels the need to talk.

Family, friends, and support groups are there for the emotional support most of the time. Sometimes no emotional support from lawyers is best. Other times...not so much. Family attorneys have one the hardest jobs in the world, at least in my opinion. After so many cases, how many times can you get involved?

That's the sticky issue-- told her that she needed to get a Family lawyer, but the problem is that she's been taking care of her daughter for nearly 5 years, and the father isn't showing he cares very much, and that's where the problem lies-- she doesn't meet the requirements for a Family lawyer, but I could be wrong, too. She used to be engaged, but no longer is, and her ex-fiancee has put her through far too much.

Then she can still find an attorney. This is why she should seek legal advice. You looking up the requirements to qualify doesn't mean a thing. She could qualify in other ways (common law or whatever).

Seek, call, video relay, tty call, email, or whatever ways to contact different law offices and see if they can help. Seek proper legal advice...rather she needs to. If you don't, I don't want to see complaining about this.

End of story. People have already posted advice above in this thread.

I don't intend to complain, but she does NOT have her own VP, and that's something I'm gonna focus on when she comes to town in 2 weeks. She needs to have one, and I have a very good idea that she's going to want me to help her, which is why I need to prepare for that.

Nevermind...you missed the point of what I said. I mentioned more than one way than using a video phone or relay in my previous post.

I saw what you said. She doesn't have a TTY, either. And that reminds me-- I need to do some research this weekend for Legal Aid and e-mail it to her.

True. They have to maintain a professional distance so they can do their jobs without burning out.

If you want to help guide her thru the steps to getting a VP account set up, that's fine. Just stay away from the legal advice.

The woman can get a family lawyer for child custody , this that is what she want.
