You have an irrational fear of going to jail.
Not really. Just don't want to be on the wrong side of the law.

You have an irrational fear of going to jail.
I really don't think this woman is a real good friend , it looking like she is using you . So what if it take longer for her to find thing online. You're really
are do doing her any favors , she'll never learn how to use the computer if you keep doing all the work for her. She needs to learn how to be more independent as a singular mother. The only way you could go to jail would be putting up a sign saying you where a lawyer and charging people money.
Have you done that too?
As a law student myself, quit giving legal advice. If people ask me for advice, I refer them to attorneys...I wouldn't dare offer a divorce attorney advice on divorces if I'm studying criminal law.
Do you truly know one part of the Illinois Law doesn't have an entirely different section about family law? This is why we go through three years of law school. It's so you can have specialized lawyers who know what they're doing.
These matters need to be talked about with a family court attorney. Lawyers cost a lot yes but typically there are programs out there for those who can't afford them. Plus, if she is deaf as you say, I bet there are programs that can help fund attorney fees. Some people I know give discounted (and even some for free) to disabled/deaf/blind/ and veterans.
Legal aids and law students - specializing in a particular field of law - can help give legal advice but they are overseen by experienced lawyers.
Child custody is one area of the law not to fool around with, especially if you only do your homework. People not choosing to seek proper advice can be used against your friend in court.
Your intentions may be good but your understanding of the impacts are minor. If you're not careful you could be required to appear in your friend's court dates - especially if the judge wants to question more about how everything has been going on.
Lastly the only way you would go to jail is if you've broken some sort of law. Or if you contempt court...
For real crime they need a realistic fear of jail, yes.Maybe if more people had unrealistic fear of going to jail, there would be less crime.

Mark, I'm curious; when you were a kid did someone used to threaten you with jail if you misbehaved? You seem to have an unrealistic fear of jail time for minor infractions of social behaviors. That's why I'm wondering where that comes from.
Mark seems to be anxious about non-criminal activities.
Just because he isnt a lawyer doesnt mean he cant help her. I have two years 4 month old daughter and are goign through the same thing so i completely understand. What you should try and do is there to a certain point. Tell her that you will be there for her in support and input your opinion and you do know IL law but laywers know more of course. But laywers are not always helpful. They can be there for legal but not so much emotional support. She could also look for a single mothers support group to get advice from others mothers in the same situation which would help you out.
If you're not afraid of going to jail why do you keep posting about it? It seems to be heavy on your mind. When I was a kid, sure. But I'm 30 now, and not afraid of many things, jail being one of them. In fact, years ago, when I knocked out that man, I was facing a trip to the slammer, but the district attorney ruled it justified and an act of self-defense.

The problem is, Mark does NOT know IL law.Just because he isnt a lawyer doesnt mean he cant help her. Uh, oh, that's her appeal to your ego. You may think that, and she might even tell you that but it's not true. That's a risky position to be in. It creates enabling and dependence, then control and resentment.Very good. Yes, I am indeed handling the emotional part of the whole thing-- I'm the only one capable of making her feel better, and that's why she needs me-- she knows she can bother me anytime she feels the need to talk.

In my 62 years of life do you know how many times I feared going to jail? Zero. Unless you're a criminal that shouldn't be a daily concern.

You'd be doing her more good by connecting her with a group that will help her become stronger and more self-sufficient.
American law doesn't operate on web searches. It's a complex process of laws and context. The very fact that you think it's something you look up on the web and get an answer shows that you don't understand that. It is nothing at all like a State Constitution test. I have a bachelor's degree in political science (and holder of the PS major award for the year I graduated) with several law-related courses under my belt, and I wouldn't dream of providing legal advice to anyone. I would say, "Let me help you find legal services," which I have done.I can easily look it up. I'm not a certified lawyer, but it's not hard to look up the answer to what someone is looking for. And FYI-- I aced my State Constitution test with a very high grade, so yes, I do.
