brain food

umm......my father told me I had the best surgeon possible when I had the surgery about 17 years ago in Houston, TX. And the man was 60 years old at that time. :P

But if I must be re-implanted in the future....I would do it. I don't think I can live without my CI, especially that I like to talk and hear things....and on the path to whatever I want to be in the future. ^_^

i have no implants. deaf as a door nob. talk fine. and i hear voices all the time. just unattached voices telling me to say things.

it's ok shelia. we understand that you were a defenseless child who was led kicking and screaming into the operating room held down by 4 burly male nurses until the gas put you out. until you passed out your cute little fingers spelled out " i love deaf".
in the past 17 years as a CIed android your brainwashing has been able to repress all your memories of deafness.
we understand. in your heart of hearts you are DEAF

LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL

You're funny DDU!!!!!

Now that you mentioned the surgery part....a memory just came up. I think I did wake up on the operating table in my CI surgery....maybe in the middle of surgery or not...

But I do remember two people in masks and gowns hovering over my face and there was a shining bright light into my face.....but after that...it all faded into black. lol.

And yes, this is a real memory.

That's not CI surgery, it's ALIEN ABDUCTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

to be honest, I have no clue. I got my implant 17 years ago. I hope my implant won't blink out while I'm studying in school in the next few years or that'll be super inconvenient to miss classes and stuff like that. I'm hoping it can last well after I graduate from college. LOL

whoa. CI can last that long? damn.... would love it if my HA can last that long!

well, keep in mind that we have to change models or upgrade every few years :P but it's the inside part in my head that l was talking about.

There are plenty of people walking around with 20 year old implants. You are probably fine! I actually met a guy who was implanted back when they were still doing single channel implants, which would have been around 1985 and he still has his original CI.

but after 17 years wouldn't the technology have improved enough to make it worth a switch? that's why the doc did it, g0t the latest model and a free toaster to boot

Nah, Cochlear retrofits their older internal devices with the new speech processors. She will be able to get the N5 very soon and will take advantage of the new technology and speech processing. I have heard that Cochlear's electrode is the same for the N5 as it was for the Nucleus 22 (just heard it, not totally sure), so technology is still working great.

just the internal. The processor on the other hand, well, you got to take care of it like you do with your hearing aids.

PFH, the culmative survival rate for cochlear implants is very high. Long-Term Reliability of Pediatric Cochlear Implants : Otology & Neurotology

According to your figures .3% of all CI's failed in the last 5 months. That seems very unlikely.

FDA is more neutral. I now no longer look at research from anything else. Even the fking about.com says there has been no malfunctions for CI's.

It's a law to report this shit to the FDA, and the other "research" is all up in the air due to hipaa. Just due to the hipaa you get very limited information on what messed up. Doctors don't want to disclose that information... so all of your research on "the best CI doctor out there" is not exactly reliable.

Everything's skewed into the direction of a CI for $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$, and now you see why I have a problem.

(Also... a minimum of 10% of all CI's do fail too.... so that .3% you just mentioned.... is pretty low.)

Posts From Hell, I wonder if a lot of the explants may be on medically fragile people? I know they started implanting kids with medical complexities or who are medically fragile.

I've seen extrusion of CI's by perfectly fine people. It is a disgusting thing to look at. Looks like you got hit by a good dose of battery acid in one spot...

I won't be surprised if the issues are more prevalent on medically fragile people.

In the FDA website and I believe i've posted here...

Some people are allergic to CI.. guess what they do? Remove the implant and re-implant them!

cha-ching..... Is all I have to say.

Dang. Thanks for this thread. Now I got hard questions indeed for my next appointment.

I'm laughing at this thread.

You can talk about how disgusting it is, you can talk about how horrible it looks, you can talk about how scary it is. It doesn't matter.

I've seen surgery videos, I've even met one person who got paralyzed in one side of her face from the surgery itself. She even got a SECOND implant on the other ear after the paralysis accident. If my implant fails, I still would get another one.

I guess the CI brainwashing really works!!!!!

MUST HEAR. MUST HEAR. MUST HEAR.

TWO EARS GOOD, NO EARS BAD!
TWO EARS GOOD, NO EARS BAD!
TWO EARS GOOD, NO EARS BAD!

You met that person? Did I meet the same person? She was a model, and after surgery she ended up being depressed, and gained a ton? If not, thats two occurrences.. too much for me to consider.

wait.. the person i know now is anti-ci. nevermind.
