You have to be able to understand to hear. Like if my mum says something I have to understand what is being said to be able to repeat it.

And Miss Kat could do that based on her ability to repeat back Ling sounds and 80% of words with pictures.

That's still hearing. Pictures do not change Miss Kat's ability to hear. They only change the way she identifies what she can or can't hear.

But if I said to her, "toothbrush", sitting at home, she would have no idea what I meant. The words had to be id'ed before the start of the test, and it had to be a very small closed set.

No. A bird can repeat back. It doessn't know what it said, just made the sounds, There is no comprehension.

I wouldnt say anything that I didnt hear/understand

Yes, she could hear that I was speaking. She could not understand what I was saying.

But you said that she repeated back "Ahhh" and "baa baa" which is exactly what you said. That's hearing, is it not?

Hearing with a HA that she got implanted for because she couldnt Hear

Neither would I. During my CI evaluation I had a great deal of difficulty guessing what I heard. How can you repeat back something you can't even begin to understand?

You cannot repeat ANYTHING without hearing or understand not even a letter

But you said that she repeated back "Ahhh" and "baa baa" which is exactly what you said. That's hearing, is it not?

Hearing yes, understanding, no.

If I had said to her "Go to your room and get a book", she would not understand with her aids, she does with her CI.

In which example?

In the testing with words, she didn't repeat.

The Ling sounds, she repeats a sound, not a word. There is nothing to "comprehend".

Sounds are still perceptions.

We are referring to the post in which you said Miss Kat could repeat back 80% of words.

Which one is it? Can she hear or can't she?

Hearing and understanding is basically the same

No. A bird can repeat back. It doessn't know what it said, just made the sounds, There is no comprehension.

If you can produce the same sound with comprehension or not you still heard.

Hearing the sounds with the different electronic of the CI should not make her comprehend more if she could already reproduce it.

That's not what you said in an earlier post. You were also denied by one CI surgeon (according to your blog), so you took her to see another. Hence, the fact that she did have a decent amount of residual hearing pre-CI.

Yeh i do admit i got that wrong

She couldn't repeat them back. She would point to the right picture at 80%.
